The sponsorship of Ferdinand and Isabella assured that the news would flash around Europe with an air of authority that other "discoverers" lacked. One of the o -men oned early visitors is Saint Brendan the Navigator, a sixth-century Irish monk who had trouble staying at home. He is said to have sailed to "the Isle of the Blessed" in a leather-bound boat, and to have been away from his monastery for seven years. Upon his return, the stories of adventures to a new land a racted pilgrims to his monastery in the Blasket Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Columbus is said to have referred to The Voyage of Saint Brendan, a very popular adventure in those days. Only a er his American journey is Brendan said to have gone to tamer lands to the east, England and Scotland. In 1976, Tim Severin set out on a two-year voyage to America from Ireland in a leather-bound boat, traveling in summer and hopscotching from the Faroes to Iceland to Newfoundland, and encountering along the way exactly what Saint Brendan describes: icebergs, whales, and porpoises. Scholars warn not to dismiss this too quickly: just as the ancient Egyp an monks sought to live in the desert, for the Cel c monks exile in a boat was the Irish equivalent. 2 Sacramental Policies ST. MICHAEL THE MINISTRIES & ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 8:30am Mass on the first Friday of each month or by appt. BAPTISM Parents will need to provide a copy of the child s birth certificate and participate in a class. Baptismal Classes are held on the 2nd Saturday of the month at 11 am in the Church office. Parents must call the church office to register for the class. Godparents must be practicing Catholics who are confirmed and married in the Church, if married. CONFESSION Confessions are heard after mass on the weekdays or on Sunday half hour before mass time. CONFIRMATION Confirmation will be given students in 8 th grade or above. They must have completed the 8 th grade religious education class and optimally the 7 th as well. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics who are already confirmed and married in the Church, if married. Parents should not be sponsors for their own children. For information on Confirmation preparation for adults please contact the pastor. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION First Holy Communion will be offered to children in Grade 2. Children must attend CCD regularly throughout Grade 2 in order to receive the Sacrament in May of that year. Students will also be prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Grade 2. MARRIAGE Both parties are expected to participate in the preparation program. Parties must notify the pastor at least one year prior to their proposed marriage date. Please meet with the pastor for a fuller explanation and to make arrangements. QUINCEANERAS St. Michael the Archangel Parish does not have Quinceaneras at this time. Baptism Class There will be no baptism class in October. The next class for parents and God parents will be held November 10th, please call the parish office for more information or to register. 3 Today is the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. It begins a period of reflection on the meaning of "riches" for individuals and communities. We read a love song to the spirit of wisdom. The Psalm and Hebrews both continue this meditation on wisdom and the Word of God. Mark personalizes these reflections by the story of a good man who wants only to move closer to eternal life but finds his way blocked by his own success. He walks away sadly from Jesus. The choice could not be clearer but even a good man, recognized as such by Jesus, finds it impossible to uproot himself from his possessions. The lesson is both about the treasure that is Wisdom, that is eternal life, that is Jesus, and the power of our attachment to things that are not eternal. We must choose again and again which path we will make our own. SPIRIT OF WISDOM The first reading is about wisdom. It is a love poem written to the object of the author's desire. The author loves wisdom itself and experiences wisdom as the source of all good things, all riches. The psalm tells us that wisdom is kindness. It is knowing and doing the work of God. It is understanding what our life is for. Hebrews recognizes that Wisdom is, in fact, the Word of God, Jesus. The source of our continuing life is Jesus. Mark makes this even more personal with the story of one man. A good man who has observed the laws from his youth, even in the loving presence of Jesus, cannot find the strength to leave his worldly possession behind and follow. LETTING GO Who does not strive to be successful? What good person does not want to be able to provide for their family all the necessities of life, to assure that they will have the means to feed, clothe, shelter, educate, and care for themselves and those they love as well as help their neighbors, strangers, the needy? Isn't that what is asked of us, to love God and our neighbor as ourselves? The readings today make clear that even more is required of us. We must do all those things and we must realize that doing so is only the first step to understanding what is at the center our lives. We must realize that our accomplishments are not the measure of our value and worth. However successful or unsuccessful we are, our worth is measured by the truth that Jesus suffered, died, and rose for us. To truly know that, we must let go of everything else that roots us in time, space, and expectation and be willing to follow eternity. Today's Readings: First Reading -- I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. (Wisdom 7:7-11). Psalm -- Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy! (Psalm 90). Second Reading -- Indeed the word of God is living and effec ve (Hebrews 4:12-13). God reminds us in Jeremiah, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition. The right to life is the first and most fundamental principle of human rights that leads Catholics to actively work for a world of greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace. God creates every person for eternal union with Himself and continually invites us to embrace a loving relationship with Him. Every person is chosen. Every Life is Worth Living Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of life. Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy.
