4 [Sue s Musings] What does it mean to be FAMILY? A few weeks ago, we had a worship service that focused in its entirety on the sacrament of communion. Communion, whether it is actually celebrated or not in a particular worship service, gives shape and meaning to what we do every week in worship. I was surprised at the level of response I received to that service, with a few people even saying they were in tears. Well, not that I m trying to make you all cry, but on Sunday, November 2, our entire worship service will focus on the sacrament of Baptism a powerful sacrament that connects us with God and with each other. Baptism is, among other things, being welcomed into the family of God a family made up of all of us who have ever gathered for worship, not just in this place, but all over the world and throughout all time. Family is a powerful metaphor for most of us. Family, if we were fortunate to grow up in a loving, supportive, and growth-oriented family, meant that someone was always there for us, and we were always there for them. It meant gathering around tables and food, and laughing and crying, teasing out details of a day, and celebrating big and little milestones. It was about joy, and a loving community. Recently we ve been talking a lot about the fellowship, or community of the church, sharing stories about the importance of the church fellowship in the past to an individual s faith, the sense of belonging it engendered, and the love for others that grew. That level of fellowship is hard to replicate today our lives are so different than they were even 10 years ago, and the pulls on us from so many outside forces is growing stronger and stronger. Yet still I hear, and echo, from you, that desire for fellowship, and the opportunities and simple joy of getting together as family. As we move into two holiday seasons, Thanksgiving and Christmas, family will be even more important to many of us. Let s put the church family on that list too, because I can t make fellowship happen for you. Nor can anyone else. For intimacy and fellowship to grow, it takes showing up. It s that simple. It takes showing up. Sometimes that s a challenge because we DO have busy lives, and we CAN T be two places at once. But when we do make that effort, and others join in making that effort, the joy and peace speaks for itself, and stays with us until the next time. Our baptism has united us as brothers and sisters in the family of God. May we make that family a part of our gatherings in the holiday seasons, and in the ordinary times, to come. They will perform during worship Sunday, November 23rd. Here s how you can be a part of this program: Be a host family by providing accommodations for two nights, Friday, November 21st and Saturday, November 22nd. Help provide a meal for the children and staff at the church on Friday evening or lunch on Sunday. Donations Accepted to benefit Circles of the Heartland 11

12 We are in the midst of our Stewardship Campaign for This year we have chosen to again focus on three powerful verbs; EQUIP, ENGAGE AND EMERGE. As part of the Stewardship Campaign, three members of our congregation will give powerful messages during Sunday worship services on how we can make a difference through our pledge dollars. We will also be treated to weekly s which share the personal stories of First Presbyterian Church in equipping, engaging and emerging. Pledge packets will be available at worship services on October 26th and November 2nd. Please pick up your pledge packet and prayerfully consider your gift of time, talent and treasure for The future is bright for our church. We look forward to new pastoral leadership in the New Year. We are committed to our youth with programs that we have all come to enjoy. With new leadership, come new ideas. Prayer Partners is an excellent new program which pair our youth with a more mature church member. This program is an outstanding way for us to connect generationally. During the youth presentation of the Chicago Mission trip, several of our youth expressed their thoughts that they were there to help, but in reality they received just as much help in their spiritual journey. How often in life, that statement rings true. Many times we receive more than we give. This is a powerful thought to keep in mind as you consider your pledge. Our pledge dollars make our programs, missions and upkeep on our beautiful church building possible. Give as generously as you can for the upcoming year. We look forward to dedicating our pledge dollars to God and our church on November 16th. 12
