4 [Sue s Musings] Are you a leader or a follower? Several years ago I invited Author Leonard Sweet to lead a weekend retreat where we delved into the Bible. We called it a Biblical Advance. The title of the event was From oranges to apples: coming alive to the living Word, and we had just about 100 people attend, half adults, half youth. If you have not heard Len Sweet, he is a dynamic, thoughtful teacher and theologian, who has a real gift for helping people see the Bible in a new light. One of the things Len said that really stuck with me has to do with leadership. He was talking about our tendency to read everything we can get our hands on about leadership, to study the leadership models in society, to study all the habits of successful leaders, so we can be good leaders in the church. Well, this is what he pointed out did you ever notice how many times God calls people to be leaders, vs. how many times God calls people to be followers? Think about it - even Moses, whom we think of as a great leader, was really called to follow - after all, he didn t set the direction for their journey through the wilderness - it was God who set the direction and led the people with the pillar of fire by night and the cloud by day! Even Paul stresses, not his leadership qualities, but his followership qualities, as he follows Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit in his ministry. We have just finished a month-long sermon series on leadership. Leadership is important, but let me ask you this: how might it change you to see yourself primarily as a follower of Jesus Christ, instead of a leader of God s people? What does it mean for you to lead as a faithful follower? For that matter, what does it mean to you to be a faithful follower, and how do you live that out? As we move into the season of Lent, this is a wonderful time to shift from our leadership focus, to being followers, and discovering how to live that out in ways that are life changing and life affirming. 7 Wednesday C.E. Education Children, Youth, and Families We are off to a great start in 2015! After a long Christmas break, Wed CE met at the skating rink for an afternoon of skating with friends. In addition to skating to our favorite songs, we played the stretch game, limbo and the cha-cha slide. Some friends even learned to skate backwards! Our very own legendary Bingo caller Sydney Soderberg hosted a New Year s Bingo party complete with party hats, horns, and confetti. We watched a slideshow of photos from the Christmas program, announced that we surpassed our fundraising goal of $220, and did some brainstorming about how we can use the extra funds to make a difference for others. Thank you to everyone who was involved with the Children s Christmas Program i.e. children, adult volunteers, church staff and those who attended and participated in the fund raising craft fair and bake sale. We raised $1,122.52! All of the kids were so proud of their efforts! They did a great job in the Christmas Program, bake sale, and craft fair! Wednesday Night C.E. Penni White Summer is just around the corner! We are very excited to announce we are teaming up with Sunrise Presbyterian Church and Christ Cathedral and will be hosting Heartland Traveling Day Camp which will serve as our Vacation Bible School for summer The dates are June Heartland Traveling Day Camp will be held at Sunrise Presbyterian Church as they have the outdoor space for the many activities to be provided. We have had a great couple of months and look forward to a great spring semester! The Youth continues to have a heart for mission. In December we took money donated by the congregation and youth and picked 4 angels from the Angel Tree and purchased many, many items off of their wish lists! We plan on collecting loads of soups and donations to take back to the Food Bank for the Souper Bowl of Caring. We fully enjoyed our work at the Food Bank at the end of November. We had a wonderful Christmas party with both groups full of Cookie decorating and a gift exchange! Nerf Wars was a huge success. With 20 plus kids running around the church playing various games, it was quite fun! The senior high has continued to meet at Mokas on Thursdays for bible study and fellowship and on Sunday s they continue to watch A Gospel Journey and follow a group of teenagers through their own journey of faith and discovery. It has offered very good and challenging conversations for all! The mid-high has switched courses and is following in the footsteps of the senior high and entered into the world of The Gospel Journey! This very smart group of kids has jumped in whole heartedly and has very lively and thought provoking conversations! The mid-high have also taken on the very fun project of maintaining the bulletin board across from Sue s office. It will be full of information about the life of the church. If you have anything you would like to have up on the bulletin board please let us know! We have planned a very exciting spring! Stay tuned for more details! Nerf Wars Tricia Cobb 8

9 Education Adult Ed An Invitation On behalf of the Adult Education committee, I would like to invite any of our members of the church, who would like to be involved in the decisions made regarding our Adult Ed Programs to join our committee. Please contact myself, Tina Ralston at ttralston@gmail.com or cell phone You may also contact Melanie or Sue at the church. Our Iceberg is Melting!!! Adult Discover Class February 15, at 9 a.m. That s a great title for a book, isn t it? Our staff is studying this book (which is really a fable) about change, and having some energetic conversations. Our session will begin studying this book in February. Written by John Kotter from Harvard Business School, Kotter tells a story about penguins living on a melting iceberg, and the challenges they face in acknowledging that the world around them is changing, and in finding new ways of living in response to that change. Change is certainly something we are all familiar with. Some people are more comfortable with it than others. Some changes are easier to see than others. Some changes are easier to navigate than others. But no matter what change is happening all around us! Join us for a conversation on Sunday, February 15, at 9 am in the Conference Room, as we talk about this fable and the changes facing the church today not just our church, but churches in general. Be sure to get a copy of the book and read the fable before the discussion class. Our Iceberg is Melting! By John Kotter and Holger Rathgeber (St. Martin s Press: New York) 2005 Spiritual Life Class Wednesdays at 6 p.m. Our Spiritual Life Class continues as we discuss Margaret Feinberg s video series The Organic God. Or, more accurately, as we use The Organic God as our jumping off point for a conversation about our faith, our challenges, and our spiritual growth. Feinberg shares personal stories and biblical insights as she leads us in exploring the character of God, and how God is present and active in our own lives. No book or preparation is needed to participate, and new people are always welcome anyone who wants to explore their own faith and grow in their spiritual life. 9
