A Very Rough Timeline for Calling a New Pastor [Sue s Musings] Can you believe it s almost Christmas? Yes, I know it isn t even Thanksgiving yet, but I guess as a culture, we re always looking forward to what comes next. So I thought I would share with you a little about what s coming next at FPC. Over the last couple months, I have spent a lot of time meeting with church leaders to get a sense of the hopes and goals FPC has for this interim time and for the future. Very briefly, this is a summary of what I have heard: 1. Focus on the future let s celebrate our past, but recognize that we can t live in the past. Who are we today? Where are we going? 2. What staff and organizational structure do we need going forward? 3. Foster relationships and build community. 4. Get back onto a growth trajectory. All good goals, and we re going to be working on all of them during our interim time. Already we ve got committees dreaming of new ideas and endeavors, some of which we ve already got going (some adult ed options), some of which you ll be hearing about in the coming months. This year we ve also been busy attending to a lot of behind the scenes stuff, such as staff transitions, cleaning up some policies, and getting some things organized that had fallen by the wayside. We ve been using this time to catch our breath and to breathe, and to get back into a routine and to re-establish a sense of normalcy necessary if we are all going to stay sane! Beginning in January, we ll make plans for reviewing our current mission statement, evaluating our current ministry, and exploring where our passion, the world s needs, and God s call intersect. Then we ll figure out what staffing we need to best be the church God is calling us to be, and who will be a good fit for our passion and needs. There will be generous opportunities for everyone to be involved in all of this. It is anticipated that this would take us until approximately late spring/early summer. Then we ll be able to call a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC), who will take what we ve done, put together the Ministry Information Form (the church s version of a resume), and begin searching for a pastor. From that point, all is in the hands of the PNC and God. Musings continued on next page...

5 First Presbyterian Church Musings continued... As I shared with the session, in my experience, I don t believe it would be unreasonable to expect that there might be a new lead pastor in place by the very end of 2014 or early So this is a VERY rough draft of a timeline. Things may go quicker than anticipated (I know - never quick enough!), or things may happen that slow us down a bit. We ll keep you posted every step of the way. Meanwhile, the transition team (Frank Children, Youth, and Families LEARNING ABOUt the BIBlE We are now 2 months into our Wednesday Children s Education classes and we are having a great time! There is much fun and learning happening. Our new Bibles are getting a work out as we travel through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation this year. The kids are really having a good time discovering what s in their Bibles and how to use them. They re learning a lot, too perhaps they re learning some things that YOU may not know! Here is a sampling of some of what our FPC kiddos have learned about the Bible so far. Test your knowledge and see how much you know! Enjoy! There are 66 books in the Bible; 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Genesis, the first book of the Bible, means beginning or origin. The oldest person recorded in the Bible is Methuselah who lived to be 969 years old! (Genesis 5:27) Exodus, the second book of the Bible, means exit or leaving and records the story of the Hebrew people exiting from Egypt. The Torah is the name for the first 5 books of the Bible and means teaching or law. Samuel was about 12 years old when he heard God s voice calling to him in the night. (1 Samuel 3) Nowhere in the book of Esther does the name of God appear. The longest Psalm is Psalm 119 with 167 verses. The shortest Psalm is Psalm 117 with 2 verses. If you open up your Bible right in the middle, you ll most likely open it to the book of Psalms. November 2013 Norton, Seara Weir, Heather Denning, Terry Bakker, Austin Ashenbrenner and myself) and the session covet your prayers, as we lay the groundwork for calling a pastor who will be a good fit for FPC, and embracing the future God is leading us into! Grace and Peace, Interim Pastor Sue Rooted in God Open to Grace Filled with Joy Education A song our PreK/K class learned about the 10 Commandments: (to the tune of Are You Sleeping? ) God s commandments, God s commandments, There are ten. There are ten. Yes, I will obey them. Yes, I will obey. I love God. I love God. The Star-Child: FPC s Children s Christmas Pageant Save the date for Wednesday, Dec. 11! Our Children s Christmas Pageant will be happening and you won t want to miss it! Join us at 5:30pm for dinner and stay for the pageant (6:15pm) as we discover, along with the prophet Isaiah, how the Prince of Peace came to earth. It will be a very special night as we prepare to receive the Star-Child into our hearts again this Christmas. Special help is needed for the Christmas Pageant! If you are interested in helping with the Christmas pageant (costumes, crafts, crowd-control), we would love it! Our rehearsals are Wednesdays from 4pm 5:30pm on Nov. 20, Dec. 4, and Dec. 11. 7 First Presbyterian Church September November 2013 Celebrating FPC Youth At FPC there is always plenty of activity buzzing around the hallways. In the midst of this activity the Youth + Young Adult Committee would like to take a moment to pause and celebrate our wonderful students. This past week, on Wednesday, October 16th Mid-High Students enjoyed a spectacular night of Nerf Wars here at FPC. This event was dreamed up by the students themselves and they had a great time helping in the planning. Students showed their excitement by inviting their friends to experience the fun we have at FPC. The result was 27 very energetic students having a great time running around FPC playing crazy fun games. This type of fun is one of the ways that we come together as a group. Through these shared experiences we are able to build lasting relationships that display Christ s love for one another. We had a great time and wanted to celebrate with you, our church family! In our classes, we will discuss the hot spots in these situations. We will also attempt to develop a clearer understanding of anger and how it can be managed. Every session will be at 9 a.m. and will run until approximately 9:45 11/03/13 Dr. Paula Fried, PhD. 8 First Presbyterian Church November 2013 A Little History... The Women of First Presbyterian Church The Missionary Society was the first women s organization formed at First Presbyterian Church. The 23-year-old church was a Home Mission church, which influenced the women to include both foreign and home missions as recipients of their financial gifts. The Women s Missionary Society held its first tea in 1883 at Mrs. William Grandma Phillips home. The women who attended gave a total of $40 for mission work. First Presbyterian also had a Ladies Aid Society, formed a short time later. One of their moneymaking projects was to publish a small magazine The Souvenir for Christmas in In 1902, daughters of the Ladies Aid Society formed the Daughters of the Church. At first it was purely social. In 1919, they began raising money to use for the second church building. They purchased carpet, curtains, a typewriter and needed supplies. All the extra money was put into a building fund for the current building. In 1911 the Church secretary, Edith Gould, formed the Presbyterian Guild, which met at nights for professionals and women who worked. In 1913, Dr. Alfred VanOrden, minister, organized the Willing Workers to promote religious, social and material interests in the church. He divided them into circles. In the 1920s when the new church was built, each group made a $500 annual pledge and usually gave much more up to $2, They were tireless workers and masters at raising money. Members pledged personally to give $5 each year. These women devoted themselves to help pay the interest on the church debt and on the debt itself. On October 7, 1948, the Presbyterian Women s Association was born. This group was renamed in 1959 United Presbyterian Women. This organization remained active until the 1990 s, but the membership had decreased enough that by 2001, the last active group, the sewing circle, was disbanded. Women in First Presbyterian Church have always taken a vital and active part in this church. The History Committee has recently completed sorting and organizing a large variety of materials from the women s organizations. There is a display of artifacts relating to this project on second floor next to the Presbytery Office and History Room. Thank You A big THANK YOU to all Deacons, Elders, Trustees and the Nominating Committee who so graciously agreed to serve our church in the coming years. How great it is that we have people like you who want to give of their time, talent and energy in order for our church to continue to nurture and serve our congregation with God s love in all that we do. We look forward to working with each of you and invite you to attend upcoming meetings which are held at the church. The next Deacon meeting is November 19th at 5:30 p.m. The Elders next meeting is on November 11 at 5:30 with Session. Trustees next meeting is November 21st at 12:00 p.m. Attending these meetings will give you an opportunity to meet with the current members and observe actions taken by each group. Thank you again for serving our church. - Bev Zizumbo -- Chair Nominating Committee

9 First Presbyterian Church November 2013 This is Stewardship 2014 Energy is high the time is exciting a sense of joy is back among us. EQUIP with Resources Because of your generosity, today every child in this church is equipped with a Bible of his or her own. A few months ago five year old Zoe Davidson s light was on past her bedtime in fact it was 9 p.m. Her dad wondered what was up. What he found was Zoe giggling over a picture of Jonah and the whale, obviously not wanting to stop looking through her new Bible. That night the light stayed on a while longer! ENGAGE with Others Because of your generosity, the youth of this church engage with others throughout Salina and the world. At the Salina Food Bank, Teressa Cooper, 15, likes being part of everyone working hard and doing something directly to help feed people who might otherwise go hungry. Carson Michaelis, 13, went on the Guatemala Mission trip in the spring. So did his mother and grandfather. He said it was really cool to be immersed in a whole other culture and see how Mom and Papo adapted, along with how I did too. EMERGE with Abundant Life Because of your generosity, today there is a new feeling of excitement emerging in the church. Joy has returned to the church was recently overheard following Sunday morning worship. Connie Johnson, a Wednesday night regular, says there s renewed interest in Wednesday night. People are excited about being together. That time speaks to a different crowd and it s good to be reached! EQUIP, ENGAGE, EMERGE Remember our future is as open and broad as we can imagine. Now is the time to continue supporting the work of this extraordinary place. Now is your opportunity to give generously! Stewardship packets are out to the congregation. Please return your pledge card by November 24. Think hard and prayerfully about your stewardship commitment for next year, increasing your pledge if possible. Now is the time to EQUIP ourselves and this church for energized, healthy growth. Now is your opportunity give generously! Now is the time to ENGAGE with others as we look deeply at ourselves, as we consider God s call, and as we make plans for our future. Now is your opportunity give generously! Now is the time we will EMERGE as a stronger, healthier, active church ready to fly. Now is your opportunity give generously!
