2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at January 20, 2019 Notes from the Pastor Notes from Deacon Fred Pope Francis: Amoris Laetitia (On Love in the Family Beginning the Journey In this Apostolic Exhortation, Pope Francis offers us an extended homily on marriage and family. This apostolic exhortation is optimistic, yet a realistic view of marriage and family life in the modern world. This document examines a variety of issues facing families today. These issues range from unwed mothers to a lack of housing. It also includes cohabitation to divorce, as well as concerns for the elderly, families with special needs and more. While upholding doctrines and teachings of the Church, the Holy Father stresses the importance of tenderness, compassion and encouragement in the path to conversion. What is an Apostolic Exhortation? An apostolic exhortation is a document from the pope. Even though it does not introduce new doctrine, it is meant to reflect on important issues concerning the Catholic Church. Amoris Laetitia presents the thoughts following the Synods of Bishops on the Family in 2014 and Good News for Families Pope Francis has spoken about the family since the start of his pontificate. His inauguration on March 19, 2013 was on the feast day of St. Joseph. That day, he spoke about the Holy Family. Since that occasion, he has continued to reflect on the family. He did this in his general audience and at events such as the 2015 Meeting of Families in Santiago de Cuba and the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. He also called the Synod of Bishops on the Family in 2014 and This apostolic exhortation may be seen as the culmination of all these efforts to focus the Church on what our faith tells the Church about the family. Adapted by Our Sunday Visitor Well, here we begin.. as we start our journey with our Lord anew.. Strengthened by the hope of the birth of our Lord, we begin our journey with the help of our Blessed Mother Mary and the help of the Holy Spirit working through each of us through the gifts he has given each and every one of us. Last week we touched upon the gift of grace.. and how the power of God s love can change our lives, despite our shortfalls. In the account of the wedding at Canaan we see grace in action. Mary realizing that the wedding party fell short in providing for their guests, did not complain or criticize or condemn but quickly put into action her intercession with her Son to fix the shortfall so that the celebration would continue without interruption. Even though Jesus was reluctant in the timing of His help, He performed this first miracle because of His Mother s plea. Grace in action. We also begin our journey knowing we are encouraged and strengthened by our community of faith. In this community we find the Holy Spirit working in many different ways through the many different gifts he has given us. Gifts of healing, faith expression, expressions of wisdom, good deeds, expressions of prayer and joy, and so many more help us on the way. Our journey is like climbing a mountain sometimes it is difficult, sometimes we need rest, sometimes we share a glorious view of God s creation, mostly we share the path with others, including our Blessed Mother. In all cases the climb is worth it There is nothing like being on the top of the mountain except for one thing.. being there with others to share the joy. Let us begin!

3 January 20, 2019 T M, S.J (View this bulletin on-line at A P, A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world. During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today s Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that we come to know God. TODAY S READINGS First Reading As a bridegroom rejoices in his bride, so God rejoices in the chosen ones (Isaiah 62:1-5). Psalm Proclaim his marvelous deeds to all the nations (Psalm 96). Second Reading All the varied gifts in the Christian community are from one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Gospel Rejoicing at a wedding celebration in Cana, Jesus replenishes the wine supply (John 2:1-11). Timothy and Titus TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Christians have always shown an inclination to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agreement. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal. Pero hubo una persona en esta escena que ya creía en él con anterioridad: su madre. Habiendo notado que se había acabado el vino se lo dijo a su Hijo. A pesar de su aparente rechazo ella alerta a los sirvientes. Este suceso no es solamente un signo del poder de Jesús, sino también del comportamiento de la familia humana. Lo ideal es que una madre crea en sus hijos y en la habilidad de ellos para hacer más de lo que parecen poder hacer. El hijo o la hija obedece lo mejor que puede. La Sagrada Familia nos ofrece un modelo. La semana pasada escuchamos la narración de Lucas acerca del Espíritu Santo que descendió en forma de paloma sobre Jesús en su bautismo. Hoy escuchamos a san Pablo que le dice a los corintios que todos estos prodigios que están sucediendo en la Iglesia primitiva son obra del Espíritu Santo. Toda la novedad descrita en las lecturas de hoy son obra de Dios: el nombre nuevo que se le da a Jerusalén, el vino nuevo de Caná, los dones espirituales nuevos en Corinto. Dios hace nuevas todas las cosas. Mañana celebramos el día de Martin Luther King. Durante la vida del Dr. King mucha gente se sintió incómoda o aún enojada por lo que él predicaba. Tal vez algunos en Corinto se hayan sentido igual. El movimiento del Espíritu Santo puede desafiar a aquellas personas que se sienten bien donde están y piensan que tienen una respuesta para todo. El movimiento del Espíritu Santo puede molestar a las personas que se sienten amenazadas por las transformaciones radicales. Pero, no es acaso el don de la salvación una transformación radical de la humanidad? Dios exalta a los abandonados, se casa con la humanidad y rebosa nuestra vida con vino bueno.
