3 Paris is worth a Mass. Beloved mostly after his death, Henry is seen as restoring the beauty of Paris. France in the late 1500s shows us the heart of the political problems of the Reformation. Henry of Navarre grows up Protestant w/ a French Catholic majority. Becoming the heir to throne, Good King Henry becomes the center of the Protestant/Catholic dispute. He becomes Catholic, then leaves his Catholic wife and Paris renouncing the faith. He must fight for his crown for years against Catholics allied with the Spanish, with the help of England s Elizabeth I. Successful he find himself outside of Paris, the last Catholic stronghold, realizing the city will be destroyed in battle. Famously, some say he says, Paris is worth a Mass. He converts back to avoid bloodshed upsetting Protestants like Elizabeth I, but is never accepted by Catholics and is assassinated after 12 failed attempts in 1610 by a Catholic. Can t make this stuff up!!!

7 Copernicus Church v. Science Copernicus of Poland exemplifies the Church v. Science battle that will brew for hundreds of years. Simply, Copernicus said the sun was at the universe s center, not the prevailing earthcentered belief championed by the Church. Ironically, Copernicus devoted his work to the Church and the Pope. It is believed he died with the book he published about the sun s centering for the Pope in his hands, but the Church would dispute his findings for 300 years.
