1 Prayer of Preparation Holy One, we wait and hope for your peace. We live in the promise of your love. As the days darken and the nights lengthen, light our way with your promised presence. Prepare us to celebrate your birth, and guide us to create your kingdom on earth. In hopeful expectation we pray. Amen. Welcome to All who worship with us this morning. Please take a moment to register your presence with us today by filling in the appropriate information on the attendance pad located in the pew, and then share it with your neighbor. Visitors are invited to speak with the ministers, deacons or greeters to ask any questions and accept our personal invitation to return to worship with us. A Reminder to Members, Guests, and Visitors... I Wish Cards are located in the holders at the ends of each pew and are a positive way of communicating any joys and concerns with your pastors. 2 CALL TO WORSHIP GAVIN STREB L: Come let us walk in the light of God. P: We are glad to go into the house of the Lord. L: Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers. P: Let us put aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. L: Keep awake, for you don t know which day your Lord is coming. P: Let us join together to worship our God. Lighting the Advent Wreath First Sunday of Advent The candle of Peace For everyone, shall live in peace and be unafraid. Today we light the first advent candle, the candle of peace. Peace is like the flame of this candle: it flickers. Sometimes it lights the darkness; sometimes it is snuffed out, and we must attempt to light it again. (Light candle). Peace is more than the absence of war, it is the sense of well-being in all people. God loves us enough to send us the Prince of Peace. UNISON PRAYER Let us pray together: O God, as we enter into this season of Advent, may we exemplify your peace in this world. Help us to walk in your light. Amen. *HYMN No. see insert PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON) DOTTIE YODER Compassionate one, we open our hearts to you. We confess our sins. We acknowledge the places where we have strayed from your peace, where we have started little wars on the home turf and where we have disrupted the harmony of the larger community. We acknowledge the times we have held our own opinion so rigidly that we could not see another s perspective; the times we were so overcome with anger that we lashed out with words or gestures, and the times we knew the vulnerable spots in another life and took advantage of that knowledge for our own benefit. All the times, so deeply regretted, when we have broken relationship by intention or carelessness, trusting in your forgiveness, we begin again to learn the ways of peace. ASSURANCE OF PARDON DOTTIE YODER Peacemaking God, you gather us into your great embrace. You love us into being peaceful people. With new courage, we receive the gifts of peace and love to continue the journey. SONG OF PRAISE AND GLORY - Hymn No. 184 verse 7 O come, desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind: Bid thou our sad divisions cease, and be thyself our King of Peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Immanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Romans 13: GAVIN STREB
3 ANTHEM Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee MARK WILBERG Jesu, the very thought is sweet; in that dear Name all heart-joys meet; But O than honey sweeter far the glimpses of his Presence are. No word is sung more sweet than this; no name is heard more full of bliss; No thought brings sweeter comfort nigh, than Jesus, Son of God most high. Jesu, the hope of souls forlorn! How good to them for sin that mourn! To them that seek thee, O how kind! But what art thou to them that find? Jesu, thou sweetness, pure and blest, life s fountain, Light of souls distress d; Surpassing all that heart requires, exceeding all that soul desires. No tongue of mortal can express, no letters write its blessedness; Alone who hath thee in his heart knows, love of Jesus, what thou art. WORDS with CHILDREN, THE LORD S PRAYER - pg. 570 hymnal FAMILY WORSHIP TODAY, NO CHILDREN S WORKSHOP TODAY VOLUNTEER PLEASE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 24: DOTTIE YODER PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE, SILENT PRAYER, DOTTIE YODER *HYMN No. 183 Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus STUTTGART SERMON Faith sees what will be that is not yet! We are grateful for the generosity aroused in us by Christ s coming into the world. May these gifts represent a new spirit of joyous sharing among us, for the sake of all your children everywhere. 4 Announcements - Our Church Lectionary for Sunday, December 5, 2010: Advent Wreath text: Isaiah 11: 1-10 and New Testament Lesson: Matthew 3: Crib Care will be provided for our 7:00 p.m. Christmas Eve service. There is only ONE service this year. So that we may plan in advance, would you be so kind as to call the church office to let us know if you will need crib care on Christmas Eve. Thank You! Do you like to climb ladders, can you take directions, would you like some coffee and kuchen? If so, mark your calendar for Thursday, December 2nd. For what you ask. To help with the annual decorating of the Sanctuary. Pat Myers would like all poofers and fluffers assembled by 9:30 a.m. Hope to see you there! If you are interested in writing cards/notes to our military, but are not comfortable writing them impromptu on the SOT Sundays, you are encouraged to write some at home during the week and just bring them in on the first Sunday of the month. Our servicemen and women really appreciate the news from home. Thank you. If you know of anyone in the military with a foreign assignment open to accepting a care package from Summerville Presbyterian Church, please contact Kathy at the church office ( ), or by at office@summervillechurch.org. Support Our Troops is interested in locating those who have a connection to our church and/or to the Irondequoit community as the mission to maintain contact with our active servicemen and women continues. Our Handbell Choir will present a participatory program called Ring Out the Joy of Christmas! on Saturday, December 4th at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Manor Auditorium, 1530 East Avenue. Please join us for an hour of music, relax and enjoy the holiday spirit and possibly ring a chime in a carol or two. EVERYONE must attend the DRESS REHEARSAL on December 11th at 10:00 a.m. Please be to church by 9:15 a.m. on Dec. 12th to get into costume before the Pageant. Thank you! CASA Mission Tree: this year CASA has presented a wish list that differs from past years where members and friends have purchase specific gifts for children involved in the foster care system. Please note the change and disregard the wish list for CASA that appears in the Trumpet and the insert of last Sunday s bulletin. We regret any confusion the change may have caused. Today s flowers (on the piano) are given by Dottie Yoder in Loving Memory of her parents. The flowers on the communion table are given by Laura Veckerelli, in honor of her mother, Jean Brooks 80th birthday. (more)
