During May we especially remember those who have died. Both our loved ones and service men and women. Although in America, Memorial Day is seen as a secular holiday, we as Sir Knights should strive for a deeper meaning and remembrance. Christ died that our sins could be forgiven and upon the Cross he gave his mother to assist us. She was known as Miriam in her Jewish community. She lived as a young woman of her culture and is known to us as the Blessed Virgin, Our Lady, the Mother of God. She has spoken to us in many languages and using different personalities but her message is always the same; turn away from sin, and turn to Christ her son. On this Memorial day as we remember and grieve for those who have died, let us also remember the sacrifice Christ made for us and turn to Our Blessed Mother for comfort. Our Blessed Mother We turn to you for protection, Holy Mother of God. Listen to our prayers and help us in our needs. Save us from every danger, Glorious and Blessed Virgin. 2 Page 2 Volume 8, Issue 11 F ROM OUR FAITHFUL COMPTROLLER... I have ordered the Chalice for Memorial Day Mass which will be engraved with the names of our deceased member for this fraternal year. We have 4 Sir Knights: SK Joseph Reschman, SK James Henery, SK John Byrne and SK Louis Parker. The Chalice will be donated to the Bishop/Diocese of Austin. In lieu of a chalice given, we will present a plaque to the surviving family members recognizing the years of service donated by our departed Sir Knight. The Spring Exemplification was just held on Saturday, April 14 th in Sealy, Texas. Our Assembly was represented with 2 new candidates for the 4 th Degree; Sir Knights Billy Roberts and SK Jose Mendez, both from council In total there were 58 new Sir Knights for District 6. Congratulations to our new members. Hopefully, the fall exemplification date and location should be announced soon, so we need to start recruiting those best prospects for the 4 th Degree. The earlier we let these brother Knights know the date, location and instructions; the better chance that they can make the 4 th degree. When ordering your tuxedo and accessories, remember to mention our brother Knight that is in the tuxedo business. I have ordered extra New 4 th Degree pins combining the dove and the American flag is available for $4.00. When it comes to falling-out our Color Corp Commander or the District Marshall have demanded uniformity, particularly when it comes to wearing pins on your tuxedo jacket. Make sure that you have the new pin on your tuxedo. Come to the meeting and pick up a new pin while I have some. Wish to see you all at the May 14 th meeting at St. Ignatius, Fr. Hal s clubhouse. Thanks to Roger Ibarra, Jr. for its submission. "Meaning of Flag Draped Coffin All Americans should be given this lesson. Those who think that America is an arrogant nation should really reconsider that thought. Our founding fathers used GOD's word and teachings to establish our Great Nation and I think it's high time Americans get re-educated about this Nation's history. Pass it along and be proud of the country we live in and even more proud of those who serve to protect our 'GOD GIVEN' rights and freedoms. I hope you take the time to read this... To understand what the flag draped coffin really means... Here is how to understand the flag that laid upon it and is surrendered to so many widows and widowers. Do you know that at military funerals, the 21-gun salute stands for the sum of the numbers in the year 1776???... = 21 Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day! The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.

Hal Zinc Memorial at Assumption Cemetery with 12 Sir Knights attending Chrism Mass at St. William 30 Sir Knights participated in this district wide fallout. Assembly 1099 was represented by Dennis Murff, Greg Nelson, Frank Mendez and Henry Casas. The fallout was led by our District Master Phil Leibowitz and District Marshal Don Ream. Fun Cheer fundraiser for the Assembly We staffed two shifts thanks to our many volunteers Holy Thursday Mass at the Cathedral with 14 Sir Knights Attending, 8 of them from our Assembly. The Obama administration s new HHS mandate requiring nearly all U.S. health insurance plans to cover contraception, sterilization and some abortion-inducing drugs has created a firestorm. But for the U.S. bishops, with broad support from religious and secular leaders, the issue at stake is an even broader issue of First Amendment religious liberty protections and government intrusion into religious faith and practice. Every diocesan bishop in the country, without exception, has publicly opposed the mandate. 5 The Sir Knight News Page 5 T HE KOFC TEXAS STATE CONVENTION. At the end of April, the Texas State Council convention was held in Houston, TX. It was a great event filled with brother Knights from all over the state. There was a Fallout for the mass on Friday at the Co-Cathedral with over 120 Sir Knights participating. Mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend Kevin J. Farrell, D.D. Bishop of Dallas, State Chaplin. Present at the mass, was a silver cross that contained the relics from the six Knights of Columbus priests martyred during the period of anti-catholic persecution in Mexico in the 1920 s and 1930 s. Bishop Farrell used the example of the martyrs to illustrate the importance for Knights of Columbus members to stand up for religious liberty today. On Sunday, another Fallout was held for the closing mass. This mass was celebrated by His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo Archbishop of Galveston/ Houston. Our own Bishop Joe Vasquez Bishop was also a celebrant. There were about 100 Sir Knights that participated in the fall-out. The Bishops were thankful of the Knights of Columbus. On Saturday, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson delivered a message that Seldom has religious liberty been threatened in so many places in the world, and never before in this country s history have people of faith faced such wide spread threats to religious freedom as we face today here in the United States. He asked the Knights to be strong and vocal in their defense of the First amendment guarantee of the free exercise of religion. Throughout the day, very passionate speeches from Bishops and State officers concerning the Health and Human services mandate requiring nearly all U. S. health insurance plans to cover contraception, sterilization and some abortion-inducing drugs. Many of the speeches spoke of religious liberty protections and government intrusion into religious faith and practice. From our Supreme office, Thomas P. Smith Jr. Chief Insurance Officer spoke of the role of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus are the critical men s organization of the Catholic Church. Brother Tomas spoke of the need to increase our membership. He stated membership was not about the numbers but the need to have committed Catholic men to be role models in our faith. We concluded the convention by electing our State officers. Jim Collins will be the incoming State Deputy, Bishop Gustavo Garcia Siler of San Antonio will be the incoming State Chaplin, Bishop George Sheltz will be Associate State Chaplin, Terry Simonton will be the incoming State Secretary, Doug Oldmixon will be the incoming State Treasurer, Diego Pena will be the State Advocate and Rudy Escamilla of San Antonio will be the incoming State Warden. The State convention next year will be in Corpus Christi, TX in April and the Supreme convention will be in San Antonio, TX. SK Albert Villegas Faithful Pursar

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world. The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong. The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie. It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic. The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day. For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were first born. The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews' eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit. The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of their Nations motto, 'In God We Trust.' After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges and freedoms they enjoy today. There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.
