Being lazy is no excuse October 2011 Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, Retired Bishop John McCarthy, Worthy Master, Reverend Fathers, Sir Knights and Ladies: The Knights of Columbus are consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and encourages devotion Our Lady and, in particular, to pray the rosary as often as possible. As new member of the Knights of Columbus we receive a rosary with instructions to carry our rosary at all times. The rosary is very much at the heart of the Knights of Columbus. I carry my rosary always but sadly I do not pray it daily. Why; because I get distracted by other things or just plain lazy. This month we celebrate not only the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, but also the birth of our namesake Christopher Columbus. Here locally we also have an opportunity to participate in Forty Days for Life. Beginning now I will not be lazy I heartedly endeavor to pray the Rosary daily I heartedly endeavor to persevere as did Christopher Columbus I heartedly endeavor to devote myself more fully to Christ, Our Blessed Mother and Mother Church Bishop Hugh Doyle is quoted as saying: "No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary" Washington D.C., Aug 4, 2010 / 09:54 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Carl A. Anderson opened the first session of the 128th Supreme Convention on Tuesday by re-consecrating his mission and responsibilities to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Before delivering his annual report to the more than 2,000 delegates of the world s largest Catholic fraternity, Anderson who is celebrating his 10th anniversary as Supreme Knight recalled that he began his tenure by visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, to consecrate his responsibilities to the Patroness of the Americas.

2 Page 2 Volume 8, Issue 4 F ROM OUR FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR CONT... I consecrated all my responsibilities to Her and I renew my consecration to her auspices, the Supreme Knight said. In his extensive report, Anderson recalled that to be a Christian is truly a very different way of living and of loving. From its earliest days, Christianity was often known simply as The Way.' It was so unique in the First Century that no further explanation was necessary. You had only to observe the manner in which the early Christians went about their daily lives the way they cared for others to sense that there was something very different about them, he added. Two thousand years later, Anderson continued, it cannot always be said that today s Christians stand out in the way the first Christians did in the days of the Roman Empire. In some ways, our secular society seems to be a more difficult environment than the pagan society in which Peter and Paul first spread the Gospel. And yet the continuing appeal of membership in the Knights of Columbus, with its devotion to charity inspired by faith, is undeniable: During the last fraternal year, more than 74,000 Catholic men joined our ranks. They too, have answered yes to the question, Am I my brother's keeper? In his yearly report, Anderson reviewed a long list of items such as the growing membership, education, insurance and investments, support to vocations and chaplains, military and veteran affairs, the inauguration of the Knights of Columbus Museum, Faithful Citizenship, charitable contributions as well as fraternal and financial highlights. On Faithful Citizenship, the Supreme Knight noted that the vast majority of Knights of Columbus activity is directed toward matters of faith, charity and family life. We are not a political organization, and partisan politics is expressly prohibited by the Constitution and laws of the Order. Vivat Jesus! Our members include people of many political persuasions, and our goal is unity in faith and fraternity, whatever our political differences might be, Anderson said. However, he explained that we do, however, take positions on a limited number of key issues that we believe are fundamental to faithful Catholic citizens and involve matters that must transcend partisan politics. Our guides in this area are two of the great documents of the Second Vatican Council: 'Gaudium et Spes,' which addressed the role of the Church in the modern world, and 'Dignitatis Humanae,' its teaching on religious freedom and the fundamental dignity of the human person. The committee entertained 5 new candidates for the 4 th degree with the exemplification to be held October 1st at St Helen s Catholic Church in Georgetown, Texas. There were 5 very good brother knights inquiring into the patriotic degree of the Knights of Columbus. Their applications were voted on at our Sept 12 th monthly meeting with acceptance. He is alert, he is eating and talking again and they will remove the Pick line he has to his stomach. He had a shunt placed in his head to relieve fluid build up in his brain. His left arm is still not moving, he still needs some assistance to do some basic functions, but other than that he s doing real well. Red Mass October 13, 2011 at St. Mary s Cathedral Times: Fallout 5:30pm Mass 6:00pm What is a Red Mass: This Thirteenth Century European custom marked the opening of the parliament and received its name from the red color of the vestments worn by the celebrant and the scarlet robes worn by the Lord High Justices. Today, many cities around the United States hold the Red Mass annually in celebration of the legal profession. All members of the legal and law enforcement professions are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served at a reception immediately following.
