Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, Retired Bishop John McCarthy, Worthy Master, Reverend Fathers, Sir Knights and Ladies: Happenings We can take a look at the past month and say it was a month of tragedies; the deliberate killing of people by the bombing at the Boston Marathon and the explosion of the fertilizer plant in West Texas. Many killed and hurt in both incidents. So one must look on and ask why and where is God in all of this. Fortunately for me, I along with some other assembly Sir Knights have been studying the book of Genesis at Austin s Catholic Scripture Study this semester and it does provide some insight. Looking back to the days of Genesis or today, man has been given free will to do good or not. We also know that all good things come from God and God is not part of evil. So... one of the important points to remember is that God will make good come from Man s actions, even evil actions. The Catechism of the Catholic Church # 312 and 324 point out that God in his almighty providence can bring a good from the consequences of an evil, even a moral evil, caused by his creatures and God would not permit an evil if he did not cause a good to come from that very evil by ways that we shall fully know only in eternal life. Look back over time and you will see that people pull together and show their best qualities when faced with tragedy. Maybe in such situations people are focused on doing the right things for the good of all and not fixated on so many personal wants and desires. This is where we all need faith... bolster your faith in this Year of Faith. Legislative Update May 2013 Texas Well our legislative session only has 40 more days and it is all over for another two years. It comes fast and that is why you need to keep up to date and lend your support to important life issues. For example SB 303 needs to be supported and addressed by our state legislatures. They won t do it unless you let your representatives know it is important to you. Continued on page 2

2 Page 2 Volume 9, Issue 11 F ROM OUR FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR CONT... Senate Bill 303, the pro-life end of life bill will help families protect loved ones near the end of life. This bill prevents secret DNAR orders ("Do Not Attempt Resuscitation"), prevents the denial of food and water so patients are not involuntarily starved or dehydrated to death, increases the dispute resolution process from 12 to 28 days, and preserves conscience protections so physicians are not required to provide futile or harmful procedures indefinitely One other for consideration is SJR 4 and HJR 110, the Texas Religious Freedom Amendment, both sitting in a house committee for 3 weeks. Only by your show of support will these get addressed in this session. The Texas Religious Freedom Amendment would provide much needed clear and specific protection in our state constitution for religious freedom. A state religious freedom constitutional amendment provides the best guarantee of lasting protection for citizens religious liberties from an overreaching legislature, government bureaucracy, or activist court. National -- The Knights of Columbus filed formal comments with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on April 8, 2013, calling on the Administration to rescind the unpopular healthcare mandate that will force Americans of faith to cover medical services that violate their consciences without regard for their First Amendment s rights. The letter, signed by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, urges the administration to rescind the mandate altogether and chart a new course. It adds: lf, however, the administration refuses to do so, we urge it to expand the religious exemption so that objecting individuals and organizations do not lose their conscience rights and are not forced to cooperate in actions that genuinely violate their religious beliefs and moral convictions. Our nation's history of bipartisan respect for the consciences of its citizens instructs us to do no less. 3 The Sir Knight News Page 3 F ROM OUR FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR CONT... A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF POPE FRANCIS Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis, was born Dec. 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was one of five children, and his father, an Italian immigrant from the region around Turin, worked as a railroad employee. After earning a degree as a chemical technician, Bergoglio discerned a vocation to the priesthood and entered seminary. He entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in 1958 and studied in Chile. He returned to Buenos Aires in 1963 and earned a degree in philosophy at the St. Joseph Major Seminary of San Miguel, where he later earned a degree in theology. Bergoglio was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 13, 1969, and from 1972 to 1973, he served as the novice master at Villa Varilari in San Miguel. Shortly after making his perpetual vows, he was elected Jesuit Provincial for Argentina on July 31, After serving in this role for six years, he went on to be rector of the philosophical and theological faculty of San Miguel and pastor of Patriarca San Jose Parish. In 1986, he was sent to Germany to complete his doctoral thesis. He later served at the University of El Salvador in Buenos Aires and in Cordoba as a confessor and spiritual director. Pope John Paul II appointed Father Bergoglio as an auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires on May 20, 1992, and archbishop of Buenos Aires in Archbishop Bergoglio was also appointed the ordinary of Eastern-rite Catholics in Argentina. He became a cardinal in Elected the 266th successor of St. Peter on March 13, 2013, Cardinal Bergoglio took the name Francis in reference to St. Francis of Assisi. Greetings Sir Knights, Our Fraternal year will be over in just 2 short months. I was reminded how quick it seemed to go by after attending the State Convention. It was my first time in 2 years after not having missed one in over 10years. It was good to see some old faces, some new faces, and that some things had not changed. It was also the first time in a long time that I was attending as an observer, that is, I had no duties as a Delegate, DD, Football Sweepstakes, or Youth Director. It was good to have a little more time to visit and relax, catch up on what is going on in the different programs of Youth, Church, Pro-Life, and wheelchair to name a few. I always come back a little charged up after hearing a few of the speakers. Our Vice Supreme Master gave a nice speech, as did our Past State deputies. There is so much to say about what goes on and what is said, I am sure you will hear about some of it at your own Council Meetings, Austin seemed to be well represented. I would also urge you to attend next year if you have not yet attended one. Granted, as with all large groups and gatherings, not everything run smooth, but I would be surprised if you come away with out being impressed or moved by something that is said or happens. With the end of the fraternal year approaching it is time to present a new slate of Officers for the Assembly. That will be done at the upcoming business meeting, and hopefully in this newsletter so that you may have a chance to see who has stepped up. This is your Assembly, these are the men you are choosing, or not, to lead the Assembly in the next year. It is your chance to step up, endorse and support those that have been chosen. For those who have decided to take an officer position, now is your time to prove you are worthy of that vote and support. And for everyone, we have a large Assembly, with a Proud and Rich History; let s continue that tradition by doing all that you possibly can as a Knight and Sir Knight. Whether that be attending meetings, falling out when ever possible, supporting our Priest and Church, supporting our Brother Knights and their families, being a good example and mentor for our youth, and by being the best Catholic man you can be. Catholic Bishops and many Catholic faithful gathered at the Texas Capitol. Some of the people traveled from as far away as Brownsville, Texas. Some of the issues included advance directives reform, school choice tax credit scholarships, payday lending, Medicaid expansion and abortion facilities regulation. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo and many of the Bishops from Texas spoke to everyone that gathered on the south steps of the Capitol. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo stated in his speech Our most cherished freedom that of religious liberty and freedom has come under increasing threat both in Texas and in Washington. He asked all Catholics to express our faith in our daily lives. He spoke about the legal battle with Department of Health and Human Services. He stated the importance of the Catholic faithful in advancing the Catholic mission through advocacy. With a number of Deacons and their wives, I had the opportunity to visit with Scott Daigle, Chief of Staff for State Representative Donna Howard. Mr. Daigle listened to our concerns and stated he would communicate our discussion to our State Representative. I encourage everyone to go to the Website to stay informed about issues that affect our Catholic faith.
