4 JULY 26, From the Pastor s Desk Elijah is one of the famous prophets in the Old Testament. He brought many people back from idol-worship into faithfulness to God. At the end of his life Elijah chose Elisha as his successor. Elisha was a rich farmer. He left everything and started working for the Lord. The first reading speaks to us about one of Elisha s famous miracles. Only with twenty barley loaves he fed a hundred people and there was some left over. In the Gospel today we see that Jesus feeds five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. The Church teaches us that whatever happened in the Old Testament were signs of better things to come through the person of Jesus, the promised Messiah. The miracle of the multiplication of loaves is the only miracle from Jesus public ministry recorded in all the four Gospels. Each evangelist has distinctive theological emphases. Today and for the next four Sundays the Gospel passage will be taken from the sixth chapter of John s Gospel. John has a few interesting details about this event. No one asked Jesus for food. No body advised him to feed the hungry people of that crowd. Jesus himself thought of their hunger and provided them with bread and fish. In the Gospel of John, Jesus is always in control of the situation. It was out of compassion and concern that he worked out that miracle. In this situation, two Apostles (Philip and Andrew) have two different points of view. Philip is over-stressed by seeing the size of the crowd and concluded that it was an impossible task to achieve. Andrew,on the other hand offered the Lord whatever the crowd had, and let the Lord work the miracle. We learn from this passage not to be pessimistic in any situation. We are encouraged to share our resources and trust in God Divine Providence. God can do a lot with the little we are willing to offer him. Like Philip, we should not be intimidated and feel helpless by the size of the challenges we face in the modern world. We know many people are dying of malnutrition and millions of people suffer spiritual starvation. We are called to respond to the hungers of the world. God bless you, Fr.
