4 April 14, From the Pastor s Desk Holy Week begins today, Palm Sunday, and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. This week has also been called The Great Week and is the most important week in the liturgical year. This week includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, often referred to as the Paschal Triduum (The Holy Three Days). This week is a very special time to bring back to our minds and hearts God s immeasurable love for us by Jesus suffering, death and resurrection to save us. Once again, I encourage everyone to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) on Monday with special hours from 3 to 9 PM here at St. Nicks and in other churches in our diocese. Let us allow God s Spirit to draw us closer to Him as we receive forgiveness and grace from this sacrament. On Palm Sunday we recall Jesus entrance into Jerusalem in humility and poverty as he rides on a young donkey. The people acclaimed him their king and called out to him, Hosanna, which means save us. As we raise our palm branches at Mass today, let us likewise call upon our Lord to save us. On Holy Thursday, Jesus celebrates the Last Supper with his twelve disciples. On this day, we commemorate Jesus gift of His Body and Blood (the Eucharist) and the institution of the Priesthood. He then models His teachings as he surprises and calls them to true service by the act of washing their feet. This day is rightly called the day of love. We are invited to follow Jesus commandment of love and serve the poor members of our community. On Good Friday, we ponder in silence that two thousand years ago, outside the city of Jerusalem, at a place called Calvary, Jesus died to save us. And though He was rejected and betrayed by his own disciples and now by us when we sin, He Who is Love, continues to love us. Nothing should give us more joy than knowing that we are loved sinners! Let us love Him back and make Him Lord and Master of our lives. On Holy Saturday, we start to prepare for the greatest feast of our faith, Jesus Resurrection. The candidates in our RCIA program look forward to receiving the Sacraments of Initiation, and we, in turn, joyfully welcome them to God s family. During these coming days, let us walk with Jesus, the Suffering Servant, who gave up the privileges of his equality with God, and was obedient to the Father s plan unto death on the Cross (Phil 2:6-11). Following His example, we too should live and love as Jesus did, namely, by doing the Father s will and carrying our own cross for our salvation and for others. By His passion, death and resurrection, Jesus has opened the gates of heaven for us. Let s make sure we stay with Him to the end! Finally, I want to thank Fr. Rafael Perez for his inspiring message of forgiveness and love. I was especially pleased to see that many of you were able to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. May God s grace fill your lives with joy and peace! God bless you, Fr. John Francis Sacrament of Confirmation: We welcome Bishop James Messa to our Parish for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for our young people on Saturday, April 27 th at 10:00 AM. Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments through which we Catholic Christians pass in the process of our religious upbringing. According to the Catholic faith, in this sacrament we are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and are strengthened in our Christian life. We pray that the Spirit of God may bless them and help them to be strong in faith and use well the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

5 PALM SUNDAY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information FAMILY DEVOTION TO THE DIVINO NIÑO Please note the change of date for the Divino Niño Family Devotion for the month of April. As you know this devotion is usually the third Friday of each month. However, the third Friday is Good Friday. Thus, we must move this devotion to Friday, April 26 th, at 7:00 pm in the Church. Please invite family, friends, and neighbors to accompany those who do come. The Divino Niño is so desirous to respond to our prayers, if we but come to Him. EASTER EGG HUNT As last year, we will have an Easter Egg Hunt after the 10:45 am Mass on Easter Sunday. We will have Easter eggs all over the grounds in the front of the Church. Some eggs will have candy and some eggs will have money. We ask the children ONLY go around finding the eggs. The parents and families should stand back and take pictures but please, do not help them find the eggs. Easter eggs are a symbol of the new life that Jesus death and resurrection earned for us. Easter is the most important feast for us. It is because out of pure love for each of us that Jesus accepted death on the cross and then rose from the dead that we are given the opportunity to new life with Him in heaven one day. Though there is no class on Easter Sunday, it would be quite sad that the children and their families not come to Mass!!! HOLY WEEK The schedule for Holy Week is in this bulletin. I send a plea to all of our parents and their children. As Catholics this is a very important week in our Christian lives. The children of all ages need to gradually be taught and experience our faith. We should not allow these precious days of Holy Week to pass as any other day of the year!!! Director of Faith Formation DEVOCIÓN FAMILIAR AL DIVINO NIÑO Tenga en cuenta el cambio de fecha para la devoción familiar divino niño para el mes de abril. Como sabéis, esta devoción suele ser el tercer viernes de cada mes. Sin embargo, el tercer viernes es Viernes Santo. Por lo tanto, debemos trasladar esta devoción al viernes, 26 de abril, a las 7:00 p.m. en la iglesia. Por favor, invite a familiares, amigos y vecinos a acompañar a los que vengan. El divino niño es tan deseoso de responder a nuestras oraciones, si no venimos a él. CAZA DE HUEVOS DE PASCUA Como el año pasado, tendremos una cacería de huevos de Pascua después de la Misa de 10:45 AM el domingo de Pascua. Tendremos huevos de Pascua por todo el terreno en el frente de la iglesia. Algunos huevos tendrán caramelos y algunos huevos tendrán dinero. Pedimos a los niños que sólo vayan a buscar los huevos. Los padres y las familias deben retroceder y tomar fotos, pero por favor, no les ayude a encontrar los huevos. Los huevos de Pascua son un símbolo de la nueva vida que la muerte y la resurrección de Jesús ganaron para nosotros. La Pascua es la fiesta más importante para nosotros. Es porque por amor puro para cada uno de nosotros que Jesús aceptó la muerte en la Cruz y luego se levantó de entre los muertos que se nos da la oportunidad de una nueva vida con él en el cielo un día. Aunque no hay clase el domingo de Pascua, sería muy triste que los niños y sus familias no vengan a Misa!!! SEMANA SANTA El horario de la semana Santa está en este boletín. Envío una súplica a todos nuestros padres y a sus hijos. Como católicos, esta es una semana muy importante en nuestra vida cristiana. Los niños de todas las edades necesitan ser enseñados gradualmente y experimentar nuestra fe. No debemos permitir que estos preciosos días de la semana Santa pasen como cualquier otro día del año!!! 9 Palm Sunday 9 FOOD PANTRY Because of the needs of the people we serve, we need to continue our food drive. We are seeking food donations. Please bring non-perishable food items (or a monetary donation) to help our parish serve our neighbors who come to us in need. Here are some suggested items: Juice, canned vegetables and canned fruits, dried beans, canned tuna or salmon, soup, tomato sauce, peanut butter, canned beans, evaporated milk, cereal, white rice, pasta. ATTENTION PLEASE GOOD FRIDAY is a day of FASTING (one full meal and two small ones For those from ages 18-59) and ABSTINENCE (no meat for those age 14 and older). The Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence from meat.
