4 From Fr. John Gribowich AUGUST 7, Reflection for the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 6 th /7 th, 2016 Is faith real and evident? St. Paul in the second reading today offers an interesting definition of faith: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. Calling faith something that is real and evident hardly seems to reflect our personal understanding and experience of faith. For most of us, faith in God is a challenge, since it involves believing in something invisible and unknown. If faith is so evident, as St. Paul suggests, wouldn t everyone naturally believe in God? Yet even the most committed Christian at times struggles with his or her faith. So what is Paul trying to say? Faith may be a mystery, but it is definitely reasonable to have faith in God and specifically for the Christian to have faith in Jesus. C.S. Lewis in his classic book The Problem of Pain asks, If the universe is so bad, or even half so bad, how on earth did human beings ever come to attribute it to the activity of a wise and good Creator? Lewis s question highlights the fact that we are hardwired to seek meaning in our lives. All of us desire to do good, to strive for lasting peace, and to find comfort in beauty. Faith is that which embodies these realities. It is faith that motivates us to get up each morning with the hope that a new day will bring about exciting possibilities and inspiring joys. I continually find meaning in my life through my daily encounters with others. So many of the interactions I have with people push me out of my comfort zone and prompt me to seek ways that I can be good to be of help and service. Having faith that our self-less actions give meaning to our lives is something beyond what we can physically see, but we know that it is evident. These interactions continually motivate us to pursue our life calling or vocation. Faith is a tangible gift experienced this side of heaven because it gives us reason to believe that a state of complete peace is possible. Of course that state can only be heaven! Jesus warns us in the Gospel today: You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. Each day allows us to live out more fully our vocation, but more importantly prepares us for our ultimate calling, which is heaven! This past May I was blessed to go on a trip with my family to Italy. We spent one day driving through the picturesque towns along the absolutely stunning Almalfi Coast. I couldn t help but think: if a place this beautiful exists this side of heaven, how tremendous will heaven be? Yes, faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen since beauty in this world is real and evident. You don t need to travel to Italy or even leave the city. This week strive to do good to others, be a person of peace, take in the glimpses of beauty that surround you and thank God for the gift of faith that makes all these things possible. While Father John Francis is on summer break, Frs. John Gribowich and Joseph Wilson will share this space. - Fr. John Gribowich ST. NICK S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work. September 18, 2016: Parish Feast and Anniversary Opening Liturgy (12:15 Mass, Church & Tolentine Hall October 23, 2016: Ministry Fair (after the Saturday 5:00pm Mass and the 7:30am, 9:15am, 10:45am and 12:15pm Masses). November 12-13, 2016: St. Nicholas of Tolentine Art Show and Museum (Tolentine Hall; details to follow) December 18, 2016: Lessons and Carols in Church (starting at 3:00pm). Also in December, Vespers on the Four Sundays of Advent. May 21, 2017: Spring Concert with all choirs, time TBD in Church (Music Director will coordinate rehearsal schedule at a later date) June 25, 2017: Parish Picnic, Cunningham Park (time TBD) September 10, 2017: Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Church and Tolentine Hall, 12:15pm We ask all parishioners to come forward and get involved in some of these programs wherever you feel more comfortable. 6 Dear Parishioners, AUGUST 7, Queridos Feligreses, I would like to say thank-you for your acceptance, loyalty and support during the eight years I have been here at St. Nick s. I must start with the parents, who recognize that learning about their faith is important and bring their children to the religious education program continually. Without you we would have no program. Thank-you for entrusting your children to us. I must also give a big THANK-YOU to the catechists. They are truly a special group of people who give of their time, share their faith and help in the formation of adults and our children. Thank-you to the priests with whom I had the pleasure to work with. You have all made my job easier and delightful. I loved coming to work, I loved helping in any way that I could. Finally, I want to say thank-you to all the groups and parishioners at St. Nick s. From the very beginning you accepted me with open arms. This acceptance made me want to do what I love to do and that is to serve. It was truly a pleasure to serve as your Coordinator of Religious Education. I leave St. Nick s only because I am getting the opportunity to be in my home parish. You will be in my prayers and I will miss you all. God Bless and say a little prayer for me. Tengo que empezar por los padres, quienes reconocen que es importante que sus hijos aprendan acerca de su fe y traen a sus niños todos los años al programa de educación religiosa. Sin ustedes no tendríamos programa. Gracias por confiarnos a sus hijos. También debo darles un gran AGRADECIMIENTO a los catequistas. Realmente son un grupo de personas muy especial, quienes dan de su tiempo, comparten su fe y ayudan en la formación de adultos y de nuestros hijos. Gracias a los sacerdotes con quienes tuve el placer de trabajar. Ustedes han hecho que me trabajo sea más fácil y agradable. Me ha encantado venir a trabajar, y ayudar en cualquier manera que pudiese. Por último, quiero darles las gracias a todos los grupos y feligreses de San Nicholas. Desde el principio ustedes me aceptaron con brazos abiertos y con esta aceptación pude hacer los que más amo y eso es servir.
