4 From the Pastor s Desk. SEPTEMBER 11, Today is the Twenty-fourth Sunday of the liturgical Year. In the Gospel passage we hear the parable of the Prodigal Son which is one of the most famous and loved stories of the New Testament. This is a vivid HD tale of God s Mercy. Like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, God waits to forgive and receive us back. God s mercy and forgiveness do not dry up and wither over time. It was only when the prodigal son came to his senses that he realized (that) he was not where he should have been. The wasteful son became aware of his sin, decided to get up, and started moving toward his father. The Scripture says that while the son was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was deeply moved. He ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. This is one of my favorite images of God running out to meet us, his prodigal sons and daughters. Repentance, in other words, is much more a matter of being found by a searching loving God than about anything we do. God is also like the woman in the other parable. Just as she searches for the coin till she finds it, so God searches for all of us wayward souls till we are found. God then welcomes us back with a party. What an amazing message about amazing grace! During this Jubilee Year of Mercy we are called to search our hearts and discover where we are in our relationship with God. Are we in or out of the Father s House? If for some reasons we have left the Father s house it is high time to trace our way back to our loving and compassionate Father. The Parish Feast: All are welcomed! We celebrate our Parish feast on Sunday, September 18, We need to learn a lot from our patron, Saint Nicholas of Tolentine. As we are preparing the celebrations for the 100 th anniversary of this great Parish, next Sunday s feast will officially begin the Centennial Celebrations. Our Very Reverend Vicar Fr. Tom Pettei will preside over the 12:15 PM Mass. All the groups and ministries of the Parish are encouraged to participate in this historic event of our parish. God bless you, Fr. John Francis ST. NICK S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work. September 18, 2016: Parish Feast and Anniversary Opening Liturgy (12:15 Mass, Church & Tolentine Hall October 23, 2016: Ministry Fair (after the Saturday 5:00pm Mass and the 7:30am, 9:15am, 10:45am and 12:15pm Masses). November 12-13, 2016: St. Nicholas of Tolentine Art Show and Museum (Tolentine Hall; details to follow) December 18, 2016: Lessons and Carols in Church (starting at 3:00pm). Also in December, Vespers on the Four Sundays of Advent. May 21, 2017: Spring Concert with all choirs, time TBD in Church (Music Director will coordinate rehearsal schedule at a later date) June 25, 2017: Parish Picnic, Cunningham Park (time TBD) September 10, 2017: Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Church and Tolentine Hall, 12:15pm We ask all parishioners to come forward and get involved in some of these programs wherever you feel more comfortable. Please help us save lives. Thank you to all the donors! You are special - your donation might seem small but it is very important. You can save up to 3 lives with just a pint of your blood. It takes about an hour between filling out the papers and the actual drawing of the blood. You need to be 17 years old (or 16 with written parental consent).
