4 From the Pastor s Desk February 3, In the first reading, the Prophet Jeremiah speaks about the mission God has destined for him even before he was born, namely, to be a prophet to the nations. God advises him to be faithful to his mission, to be strong, and to be assured that they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you (Jer. 1:19). At our Baptism, we, the Body of Christ, also share in Jesus threefold mission as prophet, priest, and king. A prophet is one who speaks and exemplifies Divine truths. This is definitely a very challenging task, especially when we have to speak the Word of God to people who vehemently oppose God messages of love and life that contradict their way of life. But like Jeremiah, we should be assured that God will ALWAYS be with us. The second reading presents the different gifts with which God has blessed us, the Body of Christ. It is essential to remember that whatever gifts have been given to us, individually or as a community, these should be shared for the main purpose of building up the Body of Christ and the salvation of all, not solely for our own interests. Thus, all our actions should be motivated by love. As St. Cyprian of Carthage has said, Charity is the bond of brotherhood, the foundation of peace.. It is greater than both hope and faith. As an eternal virtue, it will abide with us forever in the kingdom of heaven. Once we have acknowledged our being one with Jesus as our Head, our lives should be an extension of His. We ought to love like Him. The two incidents in the Gospel show how God s love does not have boundaries. The people from Nazareth wanted him to work miracles for them as He did in Capernaum. Instead, He narrated to them how God s prophets worked miracles to non-jews, the widow in Zarephath and Naaman, the Syrian. These stories infuriated them, urging them to want to kill Him. These reactions should lead us to examine our own reactions to times in our lives when selfishness prevents us from sharing God s gifts. We might feel entitled to certain rights or privileges instead of having compassion on our needy brothers and sisters. Our loving has certain requirements. Perhaps these brothers and sisters belong outside our social class, political affiliations, religious organizations, and other possible groups outside ours. God s love knows no boundaries. Let us follow His example. The Feast of Santo Niño (Infant Jesus) This past Saturday, January 26th, St. Nick s hosted a wonderful celebration of the Feast of the Santo Niño (Infant Jesus). We are grateful to all the organizers and all who participated in this celebration. Our special thanks to Rev. Jovito Carongay, Pastor of the Church of the Ascension, Elmhurst, Rev. Noel Daduya, Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Middle Village, the various ministries, and the reception coordinators. 5 fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information February 11 th is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. It is a tremendous feast over in Lourdes, France. St. Pope John Paul II made three pilgrimages to Lourdes. He proclaimed February 11 th, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, as World Day of the Sick. We are going to anticipate this feast on Sunday, February 10th, in a special way. At 10:25 am in the church, all of Faith Formation will pray the rosary for all of the sick whose names will be placed in a special container close to the images from Lourdes, France. There will be slips of paper and pencils there to write the names of the sick whom you wish to be remembered in this rosary. All are invited; Even if you are unable to be present, please do submit the names of your sick. Also, on that day, in the General Intentions, there will be a special intention for all those whose names are in the container. THE INFANT JESUS INVITES you to come with all of your needs and concerns to pray the Novena honoring His infancy. He Himself said that All that you desire to ask, ask it through the merits of my Infancy and your prayer will be heard. Here at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, this novena is on the third Friday of each month at 7:00 pm in the Church. This is a parish opportunity to help everyone to come pray together and then share hot chocolate and cookies over in the Faith Formation Center. This devotion is quite strong in many parishes in our diocese. For our parish it is a new initiative. Please help us to make this devotion known. Director of Faith Formation El 11 de febrero es la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Es una tremenda fiesta en Lourdes, Francia. San Papa Juan Pablo II hizo tres peregrinaciones a Lourdes. Proclamó el 11 de febrero, la fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, como el Día Mundial de los Enfermos. Vamos a anticipar esta fiesta el domingo 10 de febrero de una manera especial.
