Weeks of heavy rainfall have caused dams to open their floodgates, triggered landslides in the mountains, and swamped the coastal regions of Kerala. 4 September 23, From the Pastor s Desk "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." (Mk 9:37) On this Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Church invites us to listen to Jesus and follow His example of living a self-sacrificing and harmonious Christian life. In the Gospel, we read about the disciples competing among themselves for places of honor and influence in the kingdom they expected Jesus to establish. Jesus told them that they misunderstand God s Kingdom. Being first in the Kingdom does not mean seeking the limelight or having a higher position. Rather, it means serving others, engaging in ministry without distinction or discrimination. To be great is to be focused on something other than oneself. It means being able to welcome, accommodate, accept and live in harmony with others, like children do. The second reading today from the Letter of James gives us advice on how to live: Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice.. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace (Jam.3: 16-18). Envy is about wanting what someone else has, such as money, material goods, and friends. It has been called the vice of counting someone else s blessings and not our own. Envy is one of the most subtle forms of judging others. Envy and jealousy can be hell on earth. Their only cure is to recognize and count the blessings God has given specifically for us. Let us free ourselves from jealousy and selfish ambitions and let God be the top priority in our lives. He alone knows what is good for us and what will lead us to His kingdom. Jesus showed us how to do that: lay down our lives in service of Him and of others. I appreciate the fact that so many of you took time out of your busy schedules to attend this special celebration. I would like to thank all our Parish Priests, Deacons, Sisters, the Liturgical Committee, our music ministry, decorators, donors of the food and the flowers, and all participants and organizers of this event. A special thanks goes to our Food and Festivities Committee. You all did a great job and made St. Nick s proud. Thanks a lot and remember that what we do here is all for the greater honor and glory of God. The Recipient of the Person of the Year Award 2018 We are blessed with and are grateful for all volunteers who serve St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church throughout the years. Every year, the SNT Award is given to one of our parishioners who has served this parish voluntarily in any capacity. I congratulate Mrs. Gloria Scarola who was given the Person of the Year 2018 Award. Her outstanding loyalty and dedicated service to St. Nick s for the last few years are truly appreciated. 5 Twenty-FIFTH Sunday in Ordinary Time RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information Faith Formation classes begin at 8:45 am followed by Mass at 10:45 am. Please come to the blue door of the Faith Formation Center. We are still accepting registrations all week. May we all do our part to invite children to come to learn about God, Jesus, the Bible, etc. We also have begun the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program for children 3, 4, and 5 years old. It is a beautiful program based on Maria Montessori s method of education. They will not be bored because there is a great deal of involvement of the children in different learning activities. Give it a try; I am sure they will be happy! These classes are also in the Faith Formation Center at 8:45am on Sundays. The RCIA sessions for adults will begin today Sunday, September 23 rd at 10:30 am in the Faith Formation Center. Adults who need Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation, and /or Matrimony, please call Sister Alice at If the day or time is not possible for these adult sessions, again please call Sister Alice to try to arrange an alternative. Bible classes for adults in English and Spanish have begun. These classes are being offered twice- once in the morning and the same class is repeated in an evening. This will hopefully make it more convenient for all who wish to be involved in studying the Bible. The classes in English are on TUESDAYS at 7:00pm and repeated on THURSDAYS at 10:00am.
