The Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence from meat.

4 From the Pastor s Desk February 18, The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. (Mk 1:12-13) The Lenten Season of 40 days is upon us. It was encouraging to see that on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of this grace-filled season, a good number of Catholics came to St. Nicks for Mass and be blessed with the ashes. During this special time, we are called to observe the three traditional practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. From day one of this spiritual journey, we are directed to repent and believe in the Gospel, to turn away from all that keep us from being faithful to the Gospel values. In the Gospel today, the first Sunday of Lent, we read about Jesus getting tempted but not defeated by the devil in the desert. Being disciples of Jesus, we, too, get our share of temptations. Let us keep in mind that Jesus is present in whatever temptation, suffering or trial we may face. Let us be assured that He who has loved us first, is ever-present and continues to love us, despite His seeming absence at times. Let us focus on Jesus on the cross and all else will seem so little or insignificant. Some Practical Suggestions for this Lenten Journey Spending some time in silent prayer is commendable. Perhaps start by reading a chapter in the Bible or other spiritual book, then pause a few minutes to reflect on what you have just read. What is God saying to you? What is He telling you to do or not do? Perhaps you can share your reflections with a friend. You re always welcome to share these with me! Fasting is not limited to refraining from eating favorite foods. How about fasting from unnecessary or extended conversations, shopping, on-line activities, etc.? Use this freed time instead to visit or run errands for a sick or elderly neighbor, help with household chores, help in church, etc. Almsgiving is not only giving money to the poor. Giving of ourselves, our time, and our attention to people who need us will mirror the unselfish giving of Jesus who gave His all to us. We are so blessed to have the Lenten Parish Missions at St. Nick s: Hearing God in a Noisy World. (Please see the schedule in the bulletin.) This is a special gift offered to assist us not only this Lent but also for the rest of our spiritual journey. God has directed us so many times to listen to Him [Jesus]. There is still another way of fasting not necessarily from food. I received the following from the Benedictine Sisters from Pennsylvania and am passing it along. Some may find it helpful in their Lenten Journey. Lent can be more than a time of fasting; it can be a season of feasting. We can use Lent to fast from certain things and to feast on others. Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ dwelling in them. Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of life. Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light. Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God. Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. Fast form worry; feast on divine order. Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives. Fast from hostility; feast on non-resistance. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from discouragements; feast on hope. Fast from gossip; feast on purposeful silence. 6 February 18, Lenten Regulations ABSTINENCE All the faithful who have reached 14 years of age are required to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. FASTING All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions during the day. EASTER DUTY After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time of the year. Quiroga Años Dorados - El grupo de los Años Dorados se reúnen los martes a las 10:30 de la mañana en el Salón Tolentino, dos veces al mes. DONACIONES DE ALIMENTOS Debido a la creciente necesidad de las familias en nuestra comunidad, debemos continuar con nuestra Campaña de Donación de Alimentos. Les pedimos donaciones para ayudar a nuestros hermanos que están pasando necesidad. Buscamos alimentos enlatados y empacados (que no estén vencidos).!les agradecemos su contribución! REGISTRO DEL CENSO PARROQUIAL Instamos a todos los feligreses a registrarse en el censo parroquial. Este censo se usa para cartas de recomendación y para patrocinadores en sacramentos La Parroquia no puede dar permiso, patrocinio o cartas de recomendación a cualquier persona que NO esté ya registrada como Feligrés.
