4 From the Pastor s Desk. JANUARY 8, In the first reading God tells us through prophet Isaiah, The glory of the Lord shines upon you. (Is 60:1). This glory of the Lord is Christ himself who has come to dwell amongst us. He is the source of all light in the world. Paul simply affirms in the second reading that God s light is for people of all generations. That s why the responsorial psalm of the day is, Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Ps. 71:3). The message of these readings is that as Jesus illumines our lives this New Year with His own light, we too must pass on the light to one another. In the Gospel of Matthew, we heard the story of the Magi who were looking for the truth, and Christ revealed Himself to them through His star. So, we are called like those Magi to follow and adore Him. If we humbly adore and pay our newborn King fitting and sincere homage, our own light will also shine forth and others will come and pay homage to the Savior of the World. The story of the wise men is a journey of spiritual growth. It can be a journey toward deeper faith, hope and love. There are many stars that can lead us to Christ the King. At the same time, we as a church, and as individuals, are called to be a star for all those seeking the person of Jesus our Savior. The wisdom we learn from these wise men is: Never look back, don t be distracted by any obstacle and keep your eyes on the destination. God Himself will help us arrive at the place where we finally find God. Thank you for your generosity: During this wonderful season of celebrating and sharing God s love and gifts, my special thanks to the Simbang Gabi group for sharing the Filipino religious custom of celebrating a 9-day novena of Masses in preparation for the birthday of Jesus. Thank you, too, for generously donating the Christmas trees and other items that adorn our lovely Church this year. May God reward you a hundredfold! Finally, we thank God for the gift of this New Year. This is a great blessing for all of us. May we value this precious gift of time and use it well for the glory of God. Happy New Year 2017! Fr. NICK S 100th ANNIVERSARY In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work. May 20, 2017: Spring Concert with all choirs, time 7:00 pm in Church. June 25, 2017: Parish Picnic, Cunningham Park (time TBD). September 10, 2017: Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Church and Tolentine Hall, 12:15pm. We ask all parishioners to come forward and get involved in some of these programs wherever you feel most comfortable. Contact the rectory office to let us know of your interest and availability in various activities.
