You can still be thinking about plants and seedlings for the Plant Stall. You might have spare pots that others can use. Please bring them to church. There s a box in the Narthex for donations of bottles for the Mystery Bottle Bag stall. Bottles of anything would be greatly appreciated. Stall holders are needed -you or family or neighbours or friends may be interested in having a stall. Contact Geoff St Francis Day Blessing of the Pets will be held next Sunday at the 11.00am service. Even if you attend the 9.00am service, we hope you will pop home and come back with your pets to be blessed. Once again we take the opportunity to request rugs, blankets, towels, pet food or cash donations. These will all be passed on to the RSPCA and Bendigo Animal Welfare. Author unknown God Loves A Cheerful Giver Luke Our Stewardship text for today is For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg, the faith or the giving? Perhaps we tell ourselves that because we only have a simple little faith, we can only give a little to God, and that if God would give us a big faith, it would naturally follow that we would give God more of our resources. But Jesus tells us differently. He tells us that if we put our treasure somewhere, our heart will follow suit. Belief follows behaviour is a modern psychological way of putting the same idea. What we are doing with our money is a good reality check on what we actually believe in our hearts. When we change what we are doing with our treasure, and put more money into the things God is excited about, our hearts will be changed, too, into hearts that are more excited about God. 8 The Rector Writes Food for thought... One of the things that strikes me from our readings today is the call to embrace the unexpected and surprising work of God. It is a sad fact that Jesus, the Word made flesh dwelt amongst his people yet, they did not recognize him. How often are we guilty of such a thing? How often do we fail to see God in our midst? The Scriptures clearly confront us with the sobering thought that we can all too easily miss the blessings of God around us because of our own narrowmindedness. Sadly, it is easy for us to become so fixed in our own mind of what is and is not of God that we miss the work of God s Spirit in our midst and thus, fail to rejoice and give thanks for it. But, if we are seriously committed to God s Reign and not our own little dominions we will learn to celebrate the surprising, unexpected and serendipitous work of God wherever, and through whomever, we may find it. When we are willing to let go of our need for purity and exclusivism, we might just find that we experience God through the stranger, and in the most unexpected places. Unlikely Companions It was scandalous then, Jesus: your inappropriate choice of associations, your insistence on being with those who were least likely to be friends of God. It s scandalous now, Jesus! We like to think we re more gracious than that, but we still struggle with who you choose to include. Yet, you also include us who, if we re honest, are just as unlikely, just as undeserving; And as we walk with you and work with you we discover others that journey beside us, and who find us to be just as much the unlikely companions that we find them to be; So, we remember unlikely leaders, who with few resources and little influence, make significant contributions to the world;

9 We remember unlikely healers, who through little more than their compassion, bring wholeness to broken and wounded others; We remember unlikely benefactors, who, with no wealth to speak of, give generously to those with even less; We remember unlikely saints, who, though tainted and stained, broken and imperfect, bring sacredness and life to hopeless ones And as we pray, we celebrate all the Zacchaeuses, who, like us have been touched by your grace and forgiveness, and have become your unlikely companions in saving the world. Amen. Time to say goodbye. This time last week was a very difficult time. On the Wednesday night, our beloved dog Kilo was sick. On the Thursday we thought he seemed better however at 3am Friday morning my eldest son Cade and I were carrying him to the car and taking him to the vet. He was obviously stressed and not happy. Some anti-nauseous medication, pain relief and sedative helped but unfortunately, he did not seem to recover and on Friday afternoon we were back at the vet. It was thought he may have had pancreatitis and he was put on a drip that afternoon whilst we waited blood test results. Sadly, the results did not confirm that diagnosis and an ultra sound showed he had a large mass on one of his kidneys. Given Kilo s age (almost 13) and his symptoms of secondary cancer, it was not good news. Over the next 24hours he rapidly deteriorated. Kilo was a much loved, part of our family. The boys were mere teenagers when we first got him and, he was a significant part of our lives and here we were having to face the agonizing truth that he was not going to get better. On Sunday morning at 10.15am the vet came to our house. Kilo was in his favourite chair, surrounded by his family as we said good bye. For me, it was so important to be able to be fully available and present with my kids as they faced this agonizing moment. I would like to say thank you to Bishop Ron for standing in for me on Sunday and taking the services at such short notice and, thank you to everyone for your kind messages and understanding. Although it was a very sad time, through the pain, I saw what beautiful men my boys have become and, I give thanks for them. I stand so proud of each of them and my daughter. Tracey
