1 of St. Paul s United Church of Christ, Village of Attica Customarily When Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. -Luke 4:16 This isn t a popular verse for memorization, but it should be. It teaches us several important points. The first is that when Jesus traveled from town to town, he found a synagogue in which to worship on the Sabbath. For some people, travel is part of their work. One of the best ways to make connections in an unfamiliar city is to attend worship at a church of your choice. Many people also travel while on vacation. Locating a church to attend while away is a great way to encounter different worship experiences. If you generally worship at a small church, try a larger church. If you usually worship in town, seek out a country church. Some campgrounds even offer worship in a natural setting. Purposely adding a new worship experience to a vacation can make it even more memorable. The second point of the verse is that Jesus went to synagogue on the Sabbath. He understood the necessity of a Sabbath day each week. He was never too busy or too tired or too whatever to worship on a Sabbath day. If you find yourself too busy or too tired or too whatever, you are actually in dire need of the benefits of worship. If our infinite God saw the importance of the Sabbath, we finite human beings should observe it as well. The third point is that Jesus went to synagogue, as was his custom. Apparently, someone in Jesus life had taken him to synagogue as a child and youth, because he was accustomed to going to synagogue. As Christians, we are to enjoy congregational worship and invite others to participate as well. The fourth point is that as a grown man, Jesus customarily went to synagogue on the Sabbath day. He didn t make excuses about the synagogue being full of hypocrites, or boring, or too ineffectual, or at a bad time, or not according to his taste. He understood that he needed to be there. He trusted that he would find God there- and so he did. A synagogue isn t just a sanctuary in which to worship, but also a gathering place and a learning space. The same is true of a church building. Worship and education are life-long necessities. At church, you can learn about our Triune God and the Bible. You can widen your belief system. You can deepen your discipleship. Faith exploration is a life-long process. It is a journey that is not over until Jesus comes to take us to the place that he has prepared for us. So, like our Savior, make church a custom. Show up for worship. Show up for education. Show up for fellowship. Show up to be part of the better place God has already made in the world.

Funeral Luncheon Committees List When a family chooses to have a funeral or memorial service at St. Paul s they are given the opportunity to hold a luncheon following the service. The current committees list is several years old & needs to be redone. If you have questions about what being on the list entails, please see Pastor Laurie. 4 OCTOBER 2018 October has multiple associations which address many health and social issues. Among a few of them are: *Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk- Alzheimer's disease is the only one of the top 10 diseases for which there is no cure, prevention or slowing of the disease. 2/3 of the diagnosed patients in the US are women; 1 out of 3 seniors die of Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death and estimated cost is $277 billion. There are an estimated 16 million caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's and other dementias. The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is the largest world event that raises money to help with awareness, funds and research to find better treatments. To find a walk near you or to support a group, go to You can also donate to this cause on Facebook- Ralph Wirth has established a fundraiser under his name. * Family health events are honored in October. These include Children's Health Month through the US EPA. This organization strives to maintain healthy environments for children to help them play and grow strong and safe. *Healthy Babies Month is sponsored by the March of Dimes which raises money to help children with birth defects and research to prevent birth defects. Domestic violence has become prevalent in our society. October is a month to raise awareness of domestic violence. The National Resource Center for Domestic Violence has information regarding this topic with suggestions and recommendations for assistance. * National Chiropractic Month in October gives information about chiropractic care and treatment. National Physical Therapy Month is also celebrated in October. Along with National Dental Hygiene Month these groups offer therapeutic treatments to assist with overall health. *Another important aspect of health is mental health and depression evaluation. October is also National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month. Mental health has become a serious issue and screening is available through your primary care doctor or through county mental health departments. There are multiple treatment options available to help people deal with these illnesses. * UNICEF is celebrated the end of October- was founded in 1946 and provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children in developing countries. So dig deep and fill those boxes when the trick or treaters come to your door! Oct 10- National Bring Your Teddy bear to Work/School Day Oct 13- Navy Birthday- Thank a sailor for their duty Oct 14- Clergy Appreciation Day- Say a prayer and thanks for all the clergy you know Oct 17- National Take Your Parents to Lunch Day- Enjoy the day with your parents or anyone who is a parent Oct 31- Halloween- Enjoy the treats
