1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH 2ND SUNDAY OF EASTER: DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY May 1, 2011 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Acts 2:42-47 Acts 4: Corinthians 15: 1-8 Acts 5:17-26 Acts 5:27-33 Acts 5:34-42 Acts 6:1-7 Acts 2:14, Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, Psalm 2:1-9 Psalm 19:2-5 Psalm 34:2-9 Psalm 34:2, 9, Psalm 27:1, 4, Psalm 33:1-2, 4-5, Psalm 16:1-2, 5, Peter 1:3-9 1 Peter 1:17-21 John 20:19-31 John 3:1-8 John 14:6-14 John 3:16-21 John 3:31-36 John 6:1-15 John 6:16-21 Luke 24:13-35 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, May 8, 2011 The Resurrection changes everything! The disciples on the road to Emmaus had to re-learn everything they thought they knew about Scripture and see it anew through the prism of the Risen Lord. Jesus transformed their desolation into joy by his celebration of the Word and the Breaking of the Bread. They ran back to Jerusalem to proclaim the Good News. Does celebrating Mass each week change your life? 2 Dear Parishioners: What a beautiful Holy Week and Easter we were fortunate to have at Saint Louis! Each of the celebrations was done with great beauty and meaning. As you would expect, these liturgies take much effort in planning and preparation so that they may be meaningful celebrations of our Faith. To all who helped in any way to make them so inspiring and meaningful, I extend a heartfelt word of thanks. So many parishioners both behind the scenes and in the Sanctuary give an enormous amount of time and effort to making them so special. Many visitors remarked to me that our Liturgies were the most beautiful they have ever attended. I am deeply, deeply grateful to all who give so much and do so much to help us rejoice in the Resurrection of Our Lord. In a special way I acknowledge and thank Marianne Faulstich, our Director of Liturgy, for her exceptional effort and devotion her planning and dedication are the foundation of these special and unique celebrations and to Paul Carroll, our Director of Music, for the many hours of practice and devotion to offering us inspiring music to lift our spirits. As we continue in this Easter Season, I sincerely ask God s blessing on all who made our celebration of Easter such a marvelous experience. Msgr. We ask for your Prayers: During the month of May, about 183 of our children will share in an event of great joy for both them and our entire Catholic community. They will receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the very first time. They and their families have been preparing for the celebration of this Sacrament for some time now. They have learned how sacred and precious the gift of the Eucharist is and what it means to share that gift with others. Our St. Louis family recognizes what a gift these children are to us and we ask for your prayers as we bring these two great gifts together Blessing for our First Communicants: Jesus Christ, Bread of Life, travel beside these children as they take their first steps to your table. Help them to recognize you in the words of Holy Scripture, in the Blessed Sacrament, in your people, and in themselves. Draw these children close to you so they may radiate your love to others. Amen. IMPORTANT DATES FOR FIRST COMMUNION FAMILIES: May 5: Rehearsals for May 7 th Celebrations (4:30pm & 6:30pm) May 7: First Holy Communion Celebrations (9:30am & 12:30pm) May 8: May Crowning Procession after 12:45 Mass May 12: Rehearsal for May 14 th Celebration (4:30pm) May 14: First Holy Communion Celebration (9:30am) YOUTH MINISTRY I had two especially interesting encounters in the past few months, one with John and the other with Jim. Though you probably don t know them, the names are important because the people are important. I was at my monthly meeting with my spiritual director at our usual place, Donna s in Baltimore City. I had arrived a bit early and was waiting at the table. The server came over and asked if I needed anything. I said, Hi, my name is Pat. What s your name? (Kind of simple conversation, huh?) The server was taken aback and said, John. Wow, No one has ever introduced themselves to me before or even asked my name. He then went into a monologue about how serving people is like working on an assembly line. No one cares about the person who serves but only about the service that person provides. Incidentally, when my spiritual director came in, he also introduced himself to John! The next month, we all had remembered each other s names! The second encounter was here in Howard County. I was hiking and came across a man sitting on a park bench, eating a sandwich. Jim is a guy who had lived in the woods since his wife left him and took everything. He told a story about not having any food on most days nor a tent to protect him from the elements. He mentioned that he has tried shelters but has experienced some men taking drugs right in the shelter and didn t want to put up with that. Jim had a job interview the next day so I promised to do two things: Pray for him and look for an extra tent and other supplies at our house and drop them off the next morning.

6 I think about John and Jim often, hoping that each of them receive the dignity that they deserve. Although it is sometimes hard to stop and see the presence of God in another person (especially if we are wrapped up in whatever is happening in our own lives), it is our calling as people of God. I get distracted and busy like most people but I have to hope that Jesus uses me as His hands when one of His own is before me. HAPPY EASTER SEASON FROM THE CYM OFFICE! I LL BE PRAYING THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY CONTINUE TO DRAW CLOSER TO JESUS!
