While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend-not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, November 24, 2012 Today s Gospel message hardly sounds like Good News with its dark sun, falling stars and what sounds like a prophecy of doom and gloom. But the Good News is there! Jesus says his words will never pass away, that he is Lord of the Universe. And remember, it s all about JESUS. 2 Dear Parishioners: As we all know, this Thursday is Thanksgiving Day a very American and also a very Catholic day to celebrate. It is a very American day because we were the first country in the world to set aside a day each year to pause, count our blessings and give thanks to God for them. It is a very Catholic day because the word Eucharist means Thanksgiving something we are called to do each and every Sunday not just one time a year. There are some in our culture today who are attempting to re-write the history of Thanksgiving Day and who hold that Thanksgiving Day in the USA should only be a day to give thanks to one another with no reference to our loving God. In this day of increased secularism, it is all the more important that we believers not allow this special day to be turned into something other than the unique and special day that Abraham Lincoln intended it to be. In his proclamation of October 3, 1863 he wrote: It has seemed to me fit and proper that they (i.e. our blessings) should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people; I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to our beneficent Father, who dwelleth in the heavens. Come pray with us on Thanksgiving at a special Mass at 9:00am. For the record, I have inserted Abraham Lincoln s entire proclamation in this week s bulletin. I wish each of you a Happy Thanksgiving Day and I pray that God may bless you and all those you love always. ~Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Youth is not a time of life; it s a state of mind. 4 Maybe you ve thought about helping out in the parish, but can t commit to weekly or monthly meetings. Consider joining an ALTAR GUILD team. If the Holy Spirit is nudging to you to serve Our Lord and the parish this way, contact Marianne Faulstich in the Parish Office at and we can talk! Some volunteer opportunities are: Church Cleaning and Cemetery Chapel Cleaning: teams rotate weekly to clean the main church. The time commitment is usually about 1-1/2 to 2 hours per rotation. The Cemetery Chapel is cleaned monthly by individuals or teams of two. Laundering Liturgical Linens: Duties include washing and ironing small linens used in daily and weekend Masses and sacraments. Instructions are provided. Laundering Altar Server Robes: This ministry involves periodic laundering of servers robes. Each volunteer launders a few robes (wash & wear) about four times per year. If your child is an Altar Server, this is an ideal way to support him or her and the parish. Altar Guild Coordinator: Are you someone who likes working with spreadsheets? If your career involved things like organizing work teams, keeping track of projects, maintaining a schedule for recurring tasks, BOY, DO WE HAVE A NEAT OP- PORTUNITY FOR YOU! We are looking for someone with these kinds of skills to help coordinate the Altar Guild volunteers. You would work closely with the Pastor and Pastoral Associate, and get to know a lot of great people (at least by name!). This can be done from home! SAVE THE DATE!!! Join us on Saturday evening of February 2, 2013 for a fun and festive Art Auction, sponsored by our Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters of the Americas. More information will be available soon. Have you ever wondered What does it feel like to help someone in need? What can I do to brighten someone s day? How can I bring a smile to someone s face? What does it feel like to belong to a special group of women? What is my role as a child of God? What does it mean to be a Catholic Daughter? Calling all young women ages 9-18 and their parents to join us on November 24 3:00 pm in the Parish Center to get some answers! Please RSVP by November 17th to Lisa Carder at ljjkv@yahoo.com or text / call (443) You can look forward to an event filled with camaraderie, food, and fun. Come participate in prayer, song, praise and worship with the Children of Light Charismatic Prayer Group on Wednesday from 8:00 9:30 P.M. in the Pastoral Center Room 306. NEW HYMNALS AT ST. LOUIS: As you likely have heard by now, new hymnals are nearly here at St. Louis. Sponsorship opportunities are available for the new books. More information about the books and sponsorship forms are available on the St. Louis Music Ministry Blog at or by contacting Paul Carroll at pcarroll@stlouisparish.org. What are we doing with the old song books and Missalettes? Nothing they get recycled. If you want one or several perhaps for pastoral visitors to nursing homes; or for Mass and prayer services in connection with retreats - let us know! Contact the Parish Office or Marianne Faulstich at mfaulstich@stlouisparish.org with your name, contact information and how many sets you would like us to set aside for you. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS are the embodiment of Christian charity, serving the Catholic Church, local communities and our families through fraternal solidarity and mutual aid. Knights of the Order have brought stability and hope to so many individuals, families, and the poor throughout the world, particularly in the wake of disasters such as those which struck Haiti and Japan. During our fraternal year that ended this past June, members of St. Louis the King Council volunteered over 16,000 man-hours raising funds for charity and donated over $23,000 to 37 church-based charities and institutions in HoCo, surrounding communities, and overseas. The money we raised went to services ranging from substance abuse rehabilitation, to giving vocational support to seminarians and to priests entering the military ordinariate, to buying wheel chairs for veterans and ultrasound machines to save lives in the womb, to digging wells and providing clean water to kids in West Africa, and to much, much more. For more information about how you can help us to help God give charity to His people, stop and talk to any Knight in the narthex after mass. You can tell us by our red name tags! We had a great week as we finished up our first semester, celebrated our Veterans and turned the corner toward the holiday season. What a fantastic and fun celebration we had last weekend at Ten Oaks ballroom where we cruised the night away at our annual Fall Social and Auction! A heartfelt thank you to our wonderful and giving chairperson, Lisa Ferraro, who, along with her family, sacrificed countless hours to make this night fun and successful. Our appreciation does not end there, as the event would not have been possible without the tireless assistance and support of our hardworking committee, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, soliciting donations, planning, and decorating. We are so grateful to everyone who helped, and to the fun-loving crowd that attended to support this event! In honor of Veterans Day we were treated to visits by several of our military servicemen who spoke to our students about their lives as soldiers. In appreciation for their service, our students prepared over 400 gift bags to be taken back to service units and be distributed as a small token of our appreciation for their sacrifice and service to our country. We are so grateful to our guests for sharing their day with us and giving our students a true appreciation of the sacrifices that our military families make every day. May God bless all of our veterans! Bake Sale this Weekend! This Sunday the school will be hosting a bake sale after all the Masses. Please come down to the Pastoral Center Social Hall and join us for a tasty treat and a warm cup of coffee, or take something yummy home for your holiday celebration!

YOUTH MINISTRY We have places of fear inside us, but we have other places as well places with names like trust and hope and faith. We can choose to lead from one of those places, to stand on ground that is not riddled with fault lines of fear, to move towards others from a place of promise instead of anxiety. As we stand in one of those places, fear may remain close at hand and our spirits may still tremble. But now we stand on ground that will support us, ground from which we can lead others toward a trustworthy, more hopeful, more faithful way of being in the world. Parker Palmer I watched the show Fear Factor faithfully when it was on regular channels. Now that it is on premiere networks, I don t have that luxury so I recently started on Total Blackout, a fairly new in the dark game show that pits people with their fears (especially of the dark)! It s amazing what our minds can conjure up when we cannot see or when our fears are the blackness surrounding us and what lies there. I am okay with the dark and try to face other fears that I have, including heights (sometimes successfully too!) Parker Palmer s quote above speak of fear, but, more importantly, it speaks of making choices about what we do when we have places of fear. It s all about taking actions that are based on trust and hope and love. As the seasons change, as our relationships sometimes change, as our political and economic structures change, one thing is constant. God s love will never end and will take us through anything we face. Steadfast God, as we experience a season of change in our life, a time of hellos and goodbyes, a time of questioning, a time of sacrifice, allow us to move through each season assured of your love and strengthened in faith. AMEN. Please pray for those attending the Baltimore Catholic Youth Conference in Ocean City this weekend. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: November 16-18: BYCC Youth Conference in Ocean City. November 18: BRUNCH at Grassroots Homeless Shelter November 21: HS CYM 5 Week Series Compassion in Anti Bullying with Janet Gers November 25: 9:30am Youth Mass 7pm Deeper Waters November 28: HS CYM 5 Week Series Care in Crisis with Matt Otto First Reconciliation will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 27th. About 125 of our children will experience the gift of God s forgiveness and reconciliation for the very first time. Please remember them in your prayers. Blessing for our Children: Forgiving Father Creator of all that is good & kind Help these children to be open to the guidance of your Spirit as they learn to live by the light of the Great Commandment. Open their ears, minds, & hearts to the teachings of your Son. Fill them with the Spirit of love, peace, joy, & kindness. Remind them of your constant love for them, and help them to always desire your forgiveness. Amen.

6 SECOND COLLECTIONS November Campaign for Human Development VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT FISH of Howard County Inc, a forty year provider of assistance to needy members of our community is seeking additional phone and/or delivery volunteers to help as we respond to an ever increasing work load. Support from the community at large, and the St. Louis Church Community is well established and much appreciated. Now we are looking for your most valuable asset - time! For additional information contact Carroll Kitzmiller or fishhowardcounty.com STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE The readings today speak of the end of the world and the coming of the Kingdom. The bishops pastoral on stewardship says clearly that "that life to come is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now." May our good stewardship cause us to be numbered among the chosen on the last day! ST VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: If you have a clothing donation, you may drop your items into the blue St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin located in the rear of the parking lot by the Maintenance Barn. If you need to obtain a receipt for your clothing donations, you need to call St. Vincent de Paul directly at Clothing items should be placed in sturdy plastic bags and tied securely and then placed in the bin, making sure that the bags are pushed up and over the inside ledge. 15 gallon trash bags fit well in the clothing bin drop slot. This is a wonderful opportunity for used clothing in good condition to be distributed to the poor. It would be regrettable should there be the need to remove the bin from the St. Louis Campus. Thank you for you understanding and cooperation. RESPECT LIFE: Did you remember to bring your baby bottle? If not, you can bring it into the Parish Office. Thank you for supporting the Baby Bottle Fundraiser to benefit the Howard County Pregnancy Center. SHRINE OF ST.
