While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, June 20, 2010 Jesus asks his disciples us who do you say I am? Every day we must answer him and then choose to take up our cross. Every day. What is your cross this day? Don t be afraid. YOUTH MINISTRY We are gearing up for Flag Day on Monday (and I am sure that the more patriotic of us have displayed it the whole weekend!). Flags are a symbol of pride, freedom, sacrifice and dedication to country. It is a strong sign of our unity here and abroad. The colors of red, white and blue represent our past, present and future as a nation. When many people look at the American flag, we see all that we have been, are today and hope to be. We are not a perfect country and we don t always live the call to be welcoming, loving and respect for all of life and we struggle with injustices, violence, war, oppression and sin. And yet, founded under God, we can live in hope for a better world where dignity is shown to each person who lives here and respect is given to every living being. One of the sure ways to enable this dignity and respect is for us Catholics to be the Body of Christ alive and well in the world. Although broken and far from perfect, the people of God can be a witness of love, faith and hope to a world (a neighborhood, a town, a state) that desperately needs it. But, unlike a flag which is a symbol that generates feelings of patriotism, belonging and more, the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist is more than a symbol. If we really believe that the Eucharist is Jesus body and blood, we must change the way we relate to others since we physically and actively have Jesus in us! As you continue to the end of this school year, I will pray that Jesus fill your heart and mind to be His witnesses of love and hope. MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: June 18: Work camp Training, 7pm June 20: Happy Father s Day! 6 SECOND/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS June 26/27 Building Fund Thank you for your generous food donations last weekend. We distributed bags of food to the Franciscan Center, FISH, and My Brothers Keeper. Thank you for sharing your hope and goodness with those in need. STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Like Nathan in today s first reading, we sin when we begin to feel entitled and act as if what we have is ours by right, when we forget that everything we have is an unmerited gift from God. But God is gracious and forgiving even when we use His gifts wrongly or squander them thoughtlessly if, like Nathan, we confess our guilt and ask His forgiveness. PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, old or new, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Parish Development Director at or MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org. HAITI UPDATE: The St. Louis Haiti Committee is delighted to report that our friends at St. John s in Gonaives now have a reliable source of electricity and clean water. These are such basic things that we take for granted but are in short supply in Haiti. The generosity of St Louis parishioners, CRS, grants from foundations, and the hands-on expertise of Larry Newman, a parishioner at Resurrection Parish in Burtonsville who has been a partner in our work at St. Johns, have made this possible. There are now solar panels, computers, a satellite connection, a water treatment system that supplies 1,000 gallons of precious water a week to meet the needs of the children, staff and Sisters. The children are thrilled with the computers and also with the new play area built for the littlest of them. The Sisters are most grateful for the continuing love and support we share. Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish. For additional information contact the parish office at Thanks sincerely to all who have been supportive. SHRINE OF ST.
