1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY August 15, 2010 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Revelation 11:19; 12:1-6, 10 Ezekiel 24:15-23 Ezekiel 28:1-10 Ezekiel 34:1-11 Ezekiel 36:23-28 Ezekiel 37:1-14 Ezekiel 43:1-7 Isaiah 66:18-21 Psalm 45:10-12, 16 Deuteronomy 32:18-21 Deuteronomy 32:26-28, 30, Psalm 23:1-6 Psalm 51:12-15, Psalm 107:2-9 Psalm 85:9-14 Psalm 117:1-2 1 Corinthians 15:20-27 Hebrews 12:5-7, Luke 1:39-56 Matthew 19: Matthew 19:23-30 Matthew 20:1-16 Matthew 22:1-14 Matthew 22: Matthew 23: 1-12 Luke 13:22-30 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, August 22, 2010 How can we be assured of salvation? This is the question posed to Jesus. Know for sure that we are created for salvation and through, with, and in Christ we are gifted with everything we will need for eternal life. Despite this, we are not exempt from a lifelong struggle: the tendency to turn away from God, to be self-centered, to think that somehow we save ourselves. How do you answer when someone, perhaps a non-catholic Christian, asks have you been saved? 5 YOUTH MINISTRY About a month ago, I was being amazed at the young people who worked, played and prayed on the Annual CYM work camp retreat; this time with Sussex County Habitat. We not only built the foundation and floor of a duplex, we not only painted a complete house (3x!), but we did so in a spirit of prayer, knowing that God was right there with us! But wait! Then, a few weeks ago, I was again being amazed, this time by the young church in action at High LI (Archdiocesan High School Leadership Institute) where participants and staff reflected upon the servant leadership of Jesus washing his disciples feet and then acted upon it to people in need. Hold on there! Another time to be amazed right here at St. Louis as the CYM Leadership Team gathered for prayer, planning and the Genesee Valley ropes course last weekend! If you have somehow missed young people in leadership roles here at St. Louis or if you are a young person interested in being even more involved, contact us at I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU. HELP WANTED: The Youth Ministry Office is looking for adults who might be interested in helping with the Monday Religious Education program as a catechist or mentor, beginning September 27 and ending April 11. What a great way to serve the young church and answer your baptismal call to ministry! Call Pat at for more information. Also, please consider becoming a Confirmation Catechist. Classes meet only in the fall. It s a great way to get involved if you re not able to commit to a full year of teaching. Call Maggie at to learn more! 6 SECOND/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS August 28/29 Building Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE After Jesus, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary who by her example most perfectly teaches the meaning of discipleship and stewardship. She was called and gifted by God; she responded generously, creatively and prudently; she understood her divinely assigned role as handmaid in terms of service and fidelity. PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, old or new, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Parish Development Director at or MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org. Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish.
