While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend-not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, October 21, 2012 Nowadays, there are some who preach a gospel of prosperity - wealth is a sign of God s favor. That was the thinking in Jesus time - hence the disciples surprise that it s hard for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God. When we feel self-sufficient and independent, it s easy to forget that everything is a gift. Is our trust in God or in our credit line? 2 Dear Parishioners: God s kids say and do the funniest things. For example: In church one Sunday, little Johnny heard the story about creation and how Eve was created out of one of Adam s ribs. That afternoon, he told his mother he had a pain in his side and said: I think I m going to have a wife. A seven year old wrote: Dear God, I m an American. What are you? Another wrote: Dear God, please put another holiday between Christmas and Easter. There is nothing good in there now. A six year old told his father one day: I m going outside to play ball with God. The father asked: So how do you play ball with God? The boy replied: Oh, it s not hard. I just throw the ball up and God throws it back down to me. ~Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK My father (comedian Danny Thomas) used to say that there are two kinds of people in the world: givers and takers. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS invite you to a presentation entitled Wake-up America to be given by Dr. Lawrence P. Grayson on Tuesday October 16th at 7:30pm in the Pastoral Center Social Hall. For more than 60 years in America, there has been a progressing movement to restrict religious freedom and ban the expression of faith from the public square. First there were acts of repression, then distortions, and now coercion. This presentation will discuss what has occurred, with little or no opposition from Catholics, and what must be done to counter the movement. Dr. Lawrence P. Grayson is a distinguished member of The Knights of Columbus, a prolific writer of subjects that matter to all Catholics today, lay and cleric alike, and a former Visiting Scholar in the School of Philosophy at the Catholic University of America. In addition to the many positions he has held in the Knights of Columbus, MD, he most recently served as the State Director for Pro-life Activities. All are invited by the Knights of Columbus to hear this presentation and enjoy some light refreshments. For more information contact Leo Mortimer at Feeling stressed, busy, or overwhelmed? Classes YOUTH MINISTRY If you have ever been in my office, you would know about the handmade drawings and notes that I have posted all over the walls. Most are from my own son and daughters when they were younger, but there are also some young people who made pictures and asked that they be placed on the wall! The Incredible Hulk(!), the Footprints Poem complete with sand and seashells, portraits of my children, my wife and I, a fish, a beach scene, and so much more. As I look around at these beautiful souvenirs, I reminded about the gifts of art and the great gift of relationships, all given by a good and loving God. Family is so important to me and I thank God on a regular basis for the blessings of those relatives that I have. I also thank God for the blessings of the family here at St. Louis, for the young people who give me glimpses of what the church can be and for parents/families who are the home church headquarters! I offer up this week s reflection for my parents, who have shown me over the years what both family and church can be. I love you both! I hope that you (continue to) grow closer to those you call family and keep God in the center of all of your relationships. I ll be praying for you. Visit or or call the Maryland State Board of Elections at to learn more. Did you know that many of the rights sought by advocates to redefine marriage are already available to domestic partners in Maryland? Medical decision-making; hospital visitation rights; exemptions from real estate transfer and inheritance taxes; end-oflife decisions; nursing home room sharing; funeral arrangements; state employee health benefits; and more. Don t redefine marriage. Vote against Question 6 on Election Day. Learn more at Support the DREAM Act this November: The Church supports the DREAM Act as a matter of fairness. Some of our nation s earliest Catholic schools were founded in Maryland to serve African American children at a time when it was illegal to do so in many places. The Church has always, and will always, support education for all, regardless of immigration status. Vote for the DREAM Act and Question 4 on November 6. ST VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY: If you have a clothing donation, you may drop your items into the blue St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Bin located in the rear of the parking lot by the Maintenance Barn. If you need to obtain a receipt for your clothing donations, you need to call St. Vincent de Paul directly at Clothing items should be placed in sturdy plastic bags and tied securely and then placed in the bin, making sure that the bags are pushed up and over the inside ledge. 15 gallon trash bags fit well in the clothing bin drop slot. This is a wonderful opportunity for used clothing in good condition to be distributed to the poor. It would be regrettable should there be the need to remove the bin from the St. Louis Campus. Thank you for you understanding and cooperation. RESPECT LIFE: Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty: October October is Respect Life Month and the Month of the Holy Rosary. This year, believers have faced an unprecedented new threat. In 2011, a federal agency mandated that virtually all employers would be required to include sterilization, abortifacient drugs and contraceptives among the benefits covered in the healthcare plans they offer employees. In the "Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty", we highlight the courageous witness of the saints commemorated during these nine days-witnesses to our faith, to the sanctity of every human life and to religious liberty and conscience. Please go to and click on Rosary Novena for Life and Liberty. Why Vote Pro-Life? For information on why it's important to vote Pro-Life visit 40 Days for Life Campaign is endorsed by Archbishop Lori!
