While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, March 20, 2011 Each year on the 2 nd Sunday of Lent, the Church invites us to pray with Peter, James and John as they witness Jesus full glory revealed in the Transfiguration. The voice of the Father repeats the same words we heard at the Baptism of Jesus This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Now, the Father asks that we respond LISTEN to him. As you begin your Lenten conversion experience, what is Jesus saying to you? Today. 2 Dear Parishioners: There was once a woman who had lost her only son and was consumed by grief. During her bereavement, she visited the holy man of her village. She begged him to cast a spell, create a potion or use his powers to bring her son back to life. What kind of a charlatan does she take me for? thought the holy man. He looked deeply into the woman s eyes and recalled a time when he too had mourned the loss of a loved one. He understood her pain and decided to help her. Fetch me a mustard seed from a home that has never known sorrow, he said to the woman, we will use it to drive sorrow out of your life. During her quest, the woman arrived at the house of a widower. I am looking for a home that has never known sorrow, she said to the elderly man, is this such a place? The man shook his head no and recounted the tragic details of his life. After listening to this tale, the woman felt compelled to comfort the heartbroken widower and stayed awhile. Together they shared insights about life and stories of their loved ones until the woman realized it was time for her to press on. Then the woman continued her search for the mustard seed, travelling throughout the village and neighboring countryside. In every home she visited, she found people in some stage of mourning, and each time she was filled with compassion and a desire to reach out and offer assistance. After a while, she forgot that she was searching for the antidote to her sorrows. In fact she began to forget the pain of her sorrows for her grieving had now become a mission of healing. Msgr. We will keep you all in our prayers at this special time of year. Our second graders recently took a virtual tour of the White House in Social Studies class. They wrote letters to the President about their tour and received a reply back last week complete with pictures of the President, his family and first dog, Bo. The students were very excited to have received a letter from the White House! Congratulations to second grader, Charlie Wendel, a St. Louis Pack 108 Cub Scout, who recently won 1st place in the Howard County Cub Scout Pinewood Derby race with several Packs from all over the county. Congratulations Charlie! Our It s Academic team came in second runner-up in a tournament recently hosted by Resurrection/St. Paul. Out of 38 teams from 8 different schools within the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Washington, our record going into the final round was 13-2! We lost a valiant effort in the final, but we are very proud of our students for their dedication and enthusiasm! YOUTH MINISTRY Leave it to the CYM Italian Dinner to make me have a one-track mind! I really hope to see you at the 30 th Annual CYM Italian Dinner this Sunday (3/13). Not only is it a good chance to gather with family and friends (and the greater family of the St. Louis community), but it is always awesome to see the young church in action, to witness their gifts, and to experience the face, hands, and heart of Jesus in them. But there is another reason too As Catholics, we are an eating people! Blessed Mother Teresa once said, In each of our lives Jesus comes as the Bread of Life to be eaten, to be consumed by us. This is how He loves us. Then Jesus comes in our human life as the hungry one, the other, hoping to be fed with the Bread of our life, our hearts by loving, and our hands by serving. In loving and serving, we prove that we have been created in the likeness of God, for God is Love and when we love we are like God. I m not saying that a good homemade Italian meal from the loving and serving hands of the young church is exactly what Blessed Mother Teresa was talking about but it might be! Come and find out! I have personally seen Jesus in this event and the people of St. Louis (those who taste and those who serve the food) so I have very high expectations for this weekend! Join us! Mangia! I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU! MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY: March 11-13: Italian Dinner Weekend (Dinner: 3/13 1:30-6:30pm) Call CYM to help! This fund enables the school to cover the cost of education not met by tuition and to maintain a balanced budget not easy in these economic times! We appreciate your support! Congratulations to our 8 th grade students who received their acceptance letters from local private high schools within the last few weeks. There have been many scholarships awarded to our students and we are very proud of them. Congratulations on your accomplishments as the doors to your future open wide! Have a great week!
