1 ST. LOUIS CHURCH 27th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 3, 2010 Daily Mass Readings Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Next Sunday Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 Galatians 1:6-12 Galatians 1:13-24 Galatians 2:1-2, 7-14 Galatians 3:1-5 Galatians 3:7-14 Galatians 3: Kings 5:14-17 Psalm 95:1-2, 6-9 Psalm 111:1-2, 7-10 Psalm 139:1-3, Psalm 117:1-2 Luke 1:69-75 Psalm 111:1-6 Psalm 105:2-7 Psalm 98:1-4 2 Timothy 1:6-8, Timothy 2: 8-13 Luke 17:5-10 Luke 10:25-37 Luke 10:38-42 Luke 11:1-4 Luke 11:5-13 Luke 11:15-26 Luke 11:27-28 Luke 17:11-19 What is Lectio Divina? While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, October 10, 2010 Today s readings remind us that God s loving kindness extends to all even to those we would have thought were on the fringes of faith or complete outsiders. There are no outsiders with God! Naaman, the hated Syrian, and the leper, a despised Samaritan both healed and transformed. How? By surrendering to the love of God even when it seemed beyond belief, and responding to that love with a grateful heart. It is always right to give him thanks and praise! 2 Dear Parishioners: This year our parish has been asked to receive five seminarians from two seminaries. These men will be participating in the life of our parish bringing their gifts and learning from ours. Though I am their supervisor, I have often stated that it is our whole parish that participates in their formation. Their presence is not only an acknowledgement of the vitality of our parish but more importantly it is a special opportunity for our parish to actually form our future priests. I am pleased to formally welcome these wonderful, faith-filled men to our parish: Deacon Josh Bennett (Mount St Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg) was ordained a Deacon in May 2010 for the Diocese of Lafayette, Indiana. He will be exercising the Diaconate by assisting and preaching at weekend Masses and celebrating the Sacrament of Baptism. He is studying for the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas. In addition to assisting us on weekends, he will begin preparing to be ordained a Deacon, please God, in May of 2011 by preaching monthly beginning after the first of the year. Andres Serna is a native of Columbia, South America and is in Third Theology at Saint Mary s Seminary. He is studying for the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey. He too is preparing to be ordained a Deacon, please God, in May of Breen Patterson is in First Theology at Saint Mary s Seminary. He will be observing and participating in our RCIA sessions on Wednesday evenings and assisting us on weekends Breen is a native of Saint Augustine Parish in Williamsport, Maryland and is studying for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. I know you will join me in welcoming them to Saint Louis and offering them your most gracious hospitality. As they continue their discernment and formation, please remember them frequently in your prayers. They need and value our support and encouragement. We are truly fortunate to have them with us. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First Reconciliation/First Communion Preparation: Few experiences in the religious education of children are as meaningful & rewarding as helping them to prepare to celebrate the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. The Canon Law of the Church and the regulations of the Archdiocese of Baltimore state that as children reach the age of discretion (about 7 for most children), they are to be invited to prepare for these two sacraments. Children are also to be enrolled in a formal religious education program in a parish or Catholic school at least one year before beginning preparation for these sacraments. Informational letters will be mailed home this week to all 2 nd grade students whose family is registered at St Louis and who are currently registered in our religious education program or enrolled in St. Louis School. If your child attends Woodmont Academy or Trinity School & you feel they are eligible to begin their sacramental preparation, or if you feel you should have received a letter and did not, please call the Office of Religious Education at (410) The dates and times for the upcoming Parent/Child meetings for First Reconciliation Preparation are as follows: Wednesday, October 13: Wednesday, October, 20: 5:00pm OR 7:00pm in Howard Bishop Rooms 5:00pm OR 7:00pm in Howard Bishop Rooms Parents, please note, it is not necessary to sign up ahead of time for one of the meetings. You simply attend just one of the meetings listed above. Please also remember that this meeting is for parents and the child who will be preparing to receive First Reconciliation.

5 YOUTH MINISTRY Beautiful downtown Thurmont! Ever been there? Don t knock it until you experience the peace and serenity of a small town where birds are chirping and wait, was I just almost hit with something by a passing car filled with laughing teenagers? Was it nearly a drive by hiking nightmare? Thank God their silly string gun got jammed or I would have had a messy walk to my car! In Thurmont, as in life, danger awaits around every corner! I am very thankful that this crisis was averted by a misfit toy! On a more serious note followers of Christ Jesus disciples Christians are confronted daily with sins and surprises that keep us from our walk with Him. We encounter people who may not have the same values or morals that we do and the temptations are great. We see things that make us wonder about the good in the world. We experience physical, emotional and spiritual hardships and pains that make it hard to focus on the beauty of God s presence in the world. What is a Christian to do? Look to the cross. It is that simple and that complex, all rolled into one faith. Jesus gave us a solid and loving example of what to do when challenged with obstacles in life. Turn to the Life-Giver, the Savior who died so we might live an abundant life. So many trials in life can seem overwhelming until we ask Jesus to carry us and keep us in His peace. I am here if you ever want to talk about anything. I LL BE PRAYING FOR ALL OF YOU. A bequest in your will, no matter what the amount, will help the church continue to care for and service God s people. Please consider remembering St. Louis. SECOND/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS October 16/17 Mission Sunday/Propagation of the Faith October 23/24 Our Sister Parish in Haiti October 30/31 Building Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE When will I have given enough -- of my income, of my time, of my talents? Today s Gospel, suggests that only total stewardship will do When you have done all you have been commanded to do, say, We are useless servants. We have done what we were obliged to do. When will you say when? PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, old or new, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Parish Development Director at MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org or Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now. Everyone is invited and encouraged to support and participate in this important time in the life of our parish. For additional information contact the parish office at Thanks sincerely to all who have been supportive.

6 THE LORD HEARS THE CRY OF THE POOR AND SO DO THE PEOPLE OF ST. LOUIS. Just about every week, the pre- Mass announcements include the reminder: and as always, please remember the poor as you leave church today. This is not just filler we really do rely on your generosity to enable us to respond to the poor. We often get phone calls from people from the Clarksville community seeking help. Sometimes, they come in person. Once in a while, they even come during Masses on Sunday and directly ask you for money. We know this has happened for the last several weekends. Through your generosity by donations to the poor box, by bringing groceries and gift cards and cash each month for our food collection we can and do help many people. We have learned that the best way to help is through organizations that can provide more than a handout. Places like Grassroots and FISH work with those needing help with housing, budgeting, job skills, parenting classes, as well as immediate financial aid. Your poor box donations go to these local organizations to which we refer those in need. Please continue to be generous to the poor box and monthly food collections. OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH. We have many opportunities during upcoming weeks to celebrate life. Through prayer we can pray for families and for the conversion of heart it will take to foster a culture of life in our country and our world. Through our donations in the Baby Bottle campaign, we can provide material assistance to local families. Here is a sampling ~~ October 2-3: Our 5 th annual Baby Bottle fund raiser for the Howard County Pregnancy Center begins this weekend. Please take a baby bottle home. Your donation will help a family to keep a new baby from becoming a crisis. October 2-3: Spiritual Adoption: Everyone loves the beauty and innocence of a baby. As an expression of that love, St. Louis Church announces an adoption program for young and old alike. The members of St. Louis Church family will have the opportunity next weekend to spiritually adopt a child who is newly conceived this month. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, more than 4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. It is these babies you are being asked to adopt. You may adopt a child individually or as a family by signing up during the weekend of October 2-3. You will be asked to name the child for whom you will be praying, thereby acknowledging the baby's humanity. You will be asked to pray for your unborn child and for all unborn children, for the power of prayer is great. There are millions of unborn babies desperately in need of your prayers. Won t you please spiritually adopt one and share the love for life that God have given you? October 8, 15, 22, and 29: A variety of prayer experiences in the chapel in the evenings. Watch this space for details! October 9: Celebrate Life with US!
