While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, August 29, 2010 Jesus is talking once again on two different levels in this Gospel. First, he offers practical advice: Don t put yourself in a position where a human being will humiliate you (Get up and move back! Give your seat to this person!) But Jesus is always pointing to the Reign of God. Ever find yourself doing things to look good to others or for a reward? God, knowing our hearts, is ultimately the One who exalts and humbles. 2 Dear Parishioners: A group of frogs was traveling through the woods. One of them suddenly fell into a deep pit. The other frogs gathered around the pit, and when they saw how deep it was they told him that the situation was hopeless and he d never make it out. The trapped frog ignored his friends advice and tried to jump out of the pit. But the other frogs continued to yell into the pit, telling their friend that he was as good as dead. But the frog continued to jump as high as he could. All the while the other frogs were encouraging him to give up. The frog jumped harder and higher and eventually jumped out of the pit. Thanks, guys, the frog said to his friends, I never would ve made it out of that pit if it weren t for your encouragement. Did you hear what we were saying to you? asked one of his friends. No I really couldn t hear what you were saying my hearing isn t so good anymore but just seeing the concerned looks on your faces and imagining that you were telling me to keep trying was what kept me going. Remember, there is power in the words we speak. An encouraging word to someone who is down can be just the sort of thing to help that person make it through the day. By contrast, a negative word to someone who is struggling to reach higher ground can be just the sort of thing that keeps him in the pit of despair. Msgr. 5 YOUTH MINISTRY A word to parents in this week s column: There are two things you can give your children: roots and wings. Always in the back of my mind as we have raised our three incredible kids, it was more of a quaint and wise saying than a way of life. The reality of this popular phrase has hit me at times, though, especially in the last year or so. This past week, we have probably dropped our daughter off at college. While I am writing this a few days before it actually happens, I remember doing the same thing last year with my son (who we take back to college this coming week). My wife and I will need prayers for the wings thing. It wasn t easy last summer and it won t be easy now. In fact, while we have needed our faith in God to help us plant roots in our family, that seemed to be more natural and much easier than this flying lesson. Wings don t seem to be natural or easy for those of us who have watched our kids begin to talk or walk or head off to the first day of school or go on their first date or do a number of other firsts. And yet, I think that God calls each of us parents to this place of trust; trust in our daughters and sons, trust in their family foundations, trust especially in Jesus who walks with them and invites them into a more mature and deeper relationship with Him. I know because of who Jesus is to me that His presence will be with them and so my prayer is that my wife and I (and all parents) have the courage and strength to trust on Eagle s Wings and to give our college students over to God (who has had them all the time anyway). Hope this makes sense. I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU. HELP WANTED: The Youth Ministry Office is looking for adults who might be interested in helping with the Monday Religious Education program as a catechist or mentor, beginning September 27 and ending April 11.
