Youth are invited to participate in running a bake sale during the upcoming Sister Parish fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse. Anyone wishing to participate should sign up on the youth website and can choose the 4:00-6:00 PM shift or the 6:00-8:00 PM shift. Youth and all parishioners can also donate baked goods. These can be brought to the Parish Center Office between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Monday, August 20. Thank you in advance for the baked goods, time, and support. SISTER PARISH - SAVE THE DATE: Join us Monday, August 20, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Texas Roadhouse in Penn Center (Wilkins Township) to help raise money for our Sister Parish in Ataase, Ghana. SERVICE & OUTREACH COMMITTEE: MUM SALE FOR SISTER PARISH: Order forms for Fall mums are now available at the Parish Center Office, the Welcome Desk, and on-line at Prepaid orders will be accepted through noon on August 31. Please support this effort to raise funds for the installation of windows for Fr. Daniel's home parish in Ghana. Mums in beautiful Fall colors of Burgundy, Yellow, Orange, and Red are available in 8 pots and are $8 each. Pick-up is in Keane Hall on Saturday, September 8, and Sunday, September 9. TRIVIA NIGHT!!: Mark Your Calendars! On Saturday, August 18, we will be having a night of Catholic Trivia in Keane Hall. This 21+ event is BYOB and snacks will be provided. Doors open at 6:00 PM, and trivia begins at 7:00 PM. Teams of up to eight persons will answer questions in categories including Pop Culture Catholicism, The Mass, Sacred Scripture, Mary and The Saints, Church History, and Pope-ourri! All parishes from our new grouping will be invited, and the three top-scoring teams will have their choice of prizes at the end of the night! Would you consider lending them to be scanned and possibly included for the upcoming Feast Day celebration? They can be from the beginning of the parish or more recent, a holiday, sacrament, or large parish event, or anything else relating to the history of the parish. If you are willing to let them be scanned, please submit them to the Welcome Desk or Parish Center Office in an envelope labeled with your first and last name and phone number c/o Feast Day Committee. 3 STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE: Today we resume the Bread of Life discourse from John s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life - a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. New Interim Mass schedule to be released next weekend. For an update on the release of the new Mass schedule, and how to prepare ourselves for the change it will bring, I am going to borrow heavily from what Fr. Kevin Fazio shared with his new grouping of parishes in Butler. Please keep in mind that the one constant to expect with the On Mission initiative is change, more change, and perhaps more change for a number of years, until the On Mission dust settles, so to speak. While many of us may not like to hear this, it is a reality of the times that we are living in. When the interim Mass schedule is published, please be mindful that we (current clergy Fr. Al Semler, Fr. John Lynam, and I) and the future clergy team considered numerous factors in our proposal to Fr. Fred Cain, our regional vicar, some of which included: the total number of parishioners attending weekend and Holy Day Masses; the church buildings seating capacity, access, condition, location, and parking (including campus traffic patterns/concerns); the religious education (CCD) schedules; our region s demographic and population trends, and the number of funerals celebrated each week. We also gave great consideration to the reality that our grouping of four parishes is slated to have only two priests by year 2025, if not sooner. We attempted to do our very best in anticipating the needs of our community in light of future realities and to suggest a Mass and Confession schedule that would be stable. Yet, no one can predict the future and this announcement is the INTERIM MASS/CONFESSION TIMES. At what point in the future this might/will change, I cannot say; but change is a real possibility. Our main objective as clergy (the outgoing and incoming clergy teams) is to serve you, to participate in our community, to listen, to observe, and then to make decisions one moment at a time. None of us can do everything; we can only do the next thing! I ask that everyone please be understanding, patient, and flexible with these changes, especially those of you who worship and participate at Mass and in various ministries. Our recent change to our scheduling system was made in the hope that it better prepares us to meet the needs and desires of those who offer a liturgical ministry here at the parish. It is one small step we have taken to help ease this transition. Still, the clergy recognizes and respects that all leaders of liturgical ministries (music directors, cantors, musicians, Lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, ushers, greeters, altar servers, etc.), and all involved in our religious education programs, will be greatly impacted by this change. We will do our best to keep you informed and assist you in the transition. As more information is given to us we will respond in a way that allows all of us to best meet the challenges and opportunities as they become known. Be not afraid! Jesus often-times says to us, when change is necessary. Let us keep this in heart, mind and prayer as we support one another on this journey. UNVEILING FR. JOHN S PICTURE: On Monday, August 20, Fr. If so, the St. Maurice Religious Education Program is accepting registrations for Pre-School (age 4 by October) and Kindergarten for the school year. We have an exciting program led by certified catechists and parishioners. Our program fulfills the Diocese of Pittsburgh's requirements for religious education if your child attends a public, private or charter school. We will be watching the highly popular movie, "The Shack," based on William P. Young's worldwide best seller. This is an incredible movie not to be missed! LOOKING TO BUILD OUR GREETER VOLUNTEERS! You may know that we have some already great greeters at St. Maurice, but we would like to welcome more to be at our front doors to welcome everyone to Masses and events. And as we get closer to joining with other parishes through On Mission, we want to continue to present a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We are looking for people of all ages and those involved in various parish programs. Families are welcomed to greet together as well. DIOCESAN CHOIR AUDITIONS: for the season will soon be held. The Choir, under the direction of Fr. Jim Chepponis, Music Director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh, sings for the major Diocesan events at St. Paul s Cathedral throughout the year. Currently there are openings in the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass sections. Potential members must be capable sight-readers due to a limited rehearsal schedule, and at least 18 years of age. Rehearsals are held at St. John Capistran Church in Upper St. Clair. Audition times may be scheduled by calling Doris Anne in the Diocesan Music Office at before August 21.
