2 Recent ministry initiatives that have transformed our community of faith: Refugee resettlement of Syrian family. Housing and care for hurricane victims from Puerto Rico. Homeless Shelter Ministry. Partnership with Fountain Hill Elementary school, mentoring and funding after school and summer programs. Celtic pilgrim and Spirituality ministry which has given birth to ministry of healing and wellness. Success gauged by lay involvement, impact on lives, and gift of God s blessing. How are your preparing yourselves for the Church of the future? Praying. Focus on Mission, Adapting continuously. Our leadership has spent a great deal of time in working with retreat leaders and reading resources on missional strategy and shifts. We have spent a great deal of time examining Adaptive vs. Technical change, receiving statistical data provided by national church on demographics, examples of missional focused congregations. We recently engaged in a process of one on one conversations with over 25 community organizations and are ordering our physical plant and missional strategies around some of the conversations we have had regarding the community s understanding of who we are, and who we believe God is calling us to be. These conversations have largely led to our pursuit of the missioner we seek. Love Jesus; Enthusiastic; Authentic and Kind; Self-directed and Missional

3 In keeping with our canonical mandate as Cathedral we strive to be faithful in our worship. Our worship varies. Principal Service is Rite II choral Eucharist. Saturday evening Eucharist s are spoken and contemplative. 8:00 a.m. service Rite II is intimate with some singing from 1982 Hymnal. 8:45 a.m. Service is held in parish hall, alternative liturgy, Eucharist with diverse musical accompaniments from many traditions. Many families attend this service, though families attend other services as well. Celtic worship manifests in a monthly Celtic Eucharist with Celtic music and with Bishop s permission Eucharistic prayers from Celtic traditions. Once a month a Celtic Spirituality Night takes place and welcomes a diverse audience for reflection, peace, laying on of hands. The choral tradition of the Cathedral offers evensong as calendared and a monthly sung compline. How do you practice incorporating others in ministry? 3) Ministry happens when the baptized claim it! Ministry opportunities are generally generated by people s passion and call. When 2 or 3 are gathered in mission, the leadership stirs, supports, encourages, prays, and gets out of the way when necessary. As a worshipping community, how do you care for your spiritual, emotional and physical well-being? Ministry groups as they form have a standard of prayerful support of one another. The clergy provide sacramental and pastoral visitation. The order of St. Luke, lay and ordained, provide prayer and healing prayers. A ministry of Lay Pastoral Visitors and Eucharistic visitors carry prayer and sacrament to those who are unable to be physically present and to those in need. We also have an active pilgrimage and service ministry with excursions to Wales and Rome. People s faith lives have been deepened and transformed. A centerpiece of spiritual growth is the youth camp ministry where children and youth gather with a volunteer staff of adults who live in Christian community for a week of fun and faith development.

4 How do you engage in pastoral care for those beyond your worshipping community? The Cathedral s location on the Southside of Bethlehem has called us to be present to a very diverse demographic. The demographic runs the spectrum of socio-economic status, culture, religion, and language. Our Thrift Shop Ministry provides clothing at low or no cost to those in need in our community. Many visit there and find pastoral care from the dedicated group of volunteers. The Cathedral s proximity to New Bethany Ministries, a ministry of empowerment, food distribution, housing, finds a strong partnership in the Cathedral. Many residents and day visitors will find a warm welcome, bus ticket, or warm place to be here in the Cathedral offices. Share Care Faith in Action is an ecumenical ministry begun whose offices are at the Cathedral. This ministry provides respite care to care-givers of elderly neighbors. The Cathedral partners with this ministry with volunteers and annual financial support. Recent partnerships with schools on the Southside and an after school program housed in the Cathedral and run by Lehigh University allows us to be in relationship with families and young people. WE very much would like to Strengthen these relationship and create a deeper connection! As a Cathedral community, we are dedicated to our place as a worshipping and ministry center for the Diocese and for the ministry of our Bishop. A number of our members have been Deputies to General Convention and have served on national Church initiatives. Our mission statement asks us to Know Christ, to make Christ known, and to serve according to Christ s example. This has stretched us to be a positive presence in the city of Bethlehem, in the Diocese of Bethlehem, and as far as the Diocese of Kajo Keji in South Sudan, our partner diocese. The Cathedral is also used as a gathering point for nearly 15 outside groups including AA, NA, and SA ministry groups. Order of St. Luke, Healing Ministry- Dr. Connie Andrejko ( ) Bethlehem Emergency housing, though slightly longer than 5 years is in new incarnation. Deacon Rodney Conn ( ) Refugee Re-settlement Ministry Siobhan Ardizzone ( ) Pilgrimage ministry has sponsored three pilgrimages in the last five years. Two to Wales, UK, and an immersion in Celtic Spirituality and one to Rome, Italy and service in the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center located at St. Paul s within the Walls Episcopal Church. (Dean Pompa, )

5 What is your practice of stewardship and how does it shape the life of your worshipping community? We focus on generosity. WE invite people to share their gifts. We do have a focused annual In-gathering and we are fortunate to have additional resources we seek to share. Like many places, we have a community of busy people who make the most significant witnesses in their daily lives and give their precious time to church mission as they can. Annual giving campaigns focus on mission and seek a generous response to God s generous love. Givers have responded with generosity, though like many places, we seek to grow deeper in these commitments. We do have conflicts. Most of which are resolved faithfully by direct conversations. We are fortunate not to have any animated corporate conflict at this time. What is your experience leading/addressing change in the church? When has it gone well? When has it gone poorly? And what did you learn? Change in many ways has happened to this community of faith. Like most, we have said good-bye to most of the Silent generation who built and carried on the life of the Church. The way in which people have been Church has shifted dramatically. We have led change by staying focused on mission. We have led change by naming the shifts with one another. We have led change by being adaptive and experimental. We have pastored those who find the shifts in the way Church is by naming it and not shaming it. There certainly are times when we have tried things and been unsuccessful and experience frustration. (An example is planning and executing youth events, when families schedules and even their faithfulness in replying to communication has led to disappointment)
