3 Dear Friends, Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Think about it. Let this be a moment of value clarification. Where is your treasure, what are you invested in? Whatever that is, there will your heart be also. It s good for us to clarify our values, and to take stock of what is really important to us in our lives. What do we treasure and what are we invested in it? Or have money and power, and things become more important than people? What are the core values of our lives? If we say it s love and relationships, do we invest the time and energy necessary to develop them in our lives, or have we slipped into a non-relational lifestyle? Kind of an arrangement more than a relationship. Summer is still time to invest in what we really care about, each other and our relationships to God and one another. I believe we find God at the heart of our relationships, that, in fact, God is love, that dynamic and divine energy we encounter when we encounter each other. I think I need we need to take the time to make that investment of our treasure there to let that be our treasure. I think that is what the gospel this Sunday is all about. Jesus tells us to avoid greed in all its forms, and then tells the story about the rich man who dies all alone with all his money stored up in barns and different accounts. You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and all these things, to whom will they belong? Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God? What matters to you? Continue to have a rich treasure-filled summer! we find God at the heart of our relationships Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 5, 2007 Teach us to number our days aright that we may gain wisdom of heart. Psalm 90:12 Love,

August 5, 2007 Page 4 Weddings This is the tenth and final installment in a series of articles on the celebration of weddings as sacrament and parish liturgy. Wedding Customs Some things are common to all Catholic weddings: scripture readings, declaration of freedom to marry, exchange of vows, nuptial blessing. Beyond these basics, many weddings include customs that are not required by the church s Rite of Marriage, but that are significant within a particular ethnic group or local community. Ethnic Customs: In many Eastern rites, crowns are placed on the heads of the bride and groom as a symbol their baptismal inheritance of the kingdom of God. In some Filipino weddings, the couple offers a sign of respect toward their parents, godparents and elders. Recalling a ceremony that originated in the days of slavery, some African- American couples jump over a broom to symbolize their step into matrimony and the beginnings of their homemaking. Mexican wedding customs include the exchange of arras, coins which represent the couple s promise to provide and use wisely what will be necessary to sustain their home, and the placing of a lazo or yoke (often a double-looped rosary) across the shoulders of the couple as a symbol of the marriage union. Other Customs: Some couples place flowers before a statue or image of Mary as they invoke Mary s selfless love as a model for their marriage. Some light a candle from two smaller candles, indicating that the new family that is established in this wedding is formed from two existing families. Reflecting their role as the minister of the sacrament of marriage, some couples greet arriving guests at the doors of the church, introducing the guests to their parents and thanking them for their presence at the wedding. In another emerging custom, the couple presents a large basket of food for a local food pantry or soup kitchen along with the bread and wine for the Mass. Customs such as these are at their best when they support, but not overshadow, the primary elements of the wedding liturgy. To be authentic, they should reflect the couple s faith and the faith of the church concerning marriage, not merely imitate something done at another wedding Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications.

5 Pray For Our Parish 18 th Sunday in Ordinary Time What gift, O generous God, did you ever keep for yourself? Creation s rich bounty is at the service of all your creatures, and in Jesus, you Son, you offer us the surpassing treasure of life eternal. With such generosity ever before our eyes, help us avoid greed in all its forms, to measure life s worth not by the quantity of possessions, but by the life and love we freely place at the service of others. We ask this though our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. 6 Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission St. Michael s Offers Series Inspiring Wholehearted Faith in a Half-hearted Age St. Michael s Parish in Wheaton will host The Emmaus Road Initiative, a project of the Cornerstone Forum, this fall. In a series of monthly presentations, Gil Bailie, author and lecturer, will give an account of the contemporary Christian vocation that is Christ centered, intellectually engaging, and traditionally Catholic. The aim is to enliven the faith of Christians and to remind others of the cultural indispensability of Western civilization's religious heritage. The first three talks in the series will be held in St. Michael s Church on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. on: Sept 24 The Present Time Its Peril and Promise Oct 22 Why Are We Here? Creation and Fall Nov 19 What Is Happening In History? History and Hope. Attendance is free and open to the public Ladies Bridge Group Recruiting Players St. Thomas Ladies Bridge Group resumes in September. All are invited to take part, meet your fellow parishioners and have fun. All levels are welcome. Call Sue Randolph for additional information C.A.R.E. CORNER Jesus of course was rather adept at teaching people about God. After all, that was His job, not to mention that He was rather knowledgeable on the subject. Was He the only one truly qualified for evangelism? Of course not! Jesus knew all too well that His time on earth was limited. And if the Good News was going to be perpetuated, it had to be proclaimed by someone other than Jesus Himself. This is where the disciples come into the picture. Did Jesus disciples know and fully understand everything there was to know about God? Definitely not. But that didn t stop them from sharing what they did know. Did the disciples have any authority to cure diseases and illnesses and expel unclean spirits? Not until Jesus gave them that authority. And did the disciples have the courage to fearlessly do all these things in Jesus name? Not until after they received the power of the Holy Spirit to do so. We too have been given the same knowledge, authority and power which equip us to spread the Good News. Sometimes we just need a little reminder. Current Young Adult Ministry for People in Their 20 s & 30 s The Cubs and Sox are done, but the Cougars are still alive! Join Current for our Kane County Cougars outing on August 11. Finally, if you are looking for some exercise, check out the Current Walking Club. Contact Kris for information at kdulski@calamos.com. If you want any other information about Current, check out Calling all Able-bodied and Spirit-filled Adults! WHO SHALL I BE? I watched them tearing a building down, a gang of men in a busy town. With a ho, heave-ho, and a lusty yell, they swung a beam and a wall fell. I asked the foreman, Are these men skilled? The men you d hire, if you had to build? He laughed as he replied, No, indeed, just a common laborer is all I need. I can easily wreck in a day or two what builders have taken years to do. I asked myself as I went away, which of these roles have I tried to play? Am I a builder who works with care, measuring life by rule and square? Or am I the wrecker who walks the town content with the labor of tearing down? Please contact Corinne Seguin in the Religious Education office if you are interested in being a skilled laborer in the Junior High Religious Education program. Classes meet on Monday nights at Hill Middle School from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. Resources, and mentors are available at no cost! August 5, 2007 Page 6

Contact Rodney or Michelle Pro-Life Why is abortion a bone in the throat of contemporary culture? Because we all know intuitively that it violates the rules that make a loving, civilized culture possible. We also know that far from being a victimless crime, abortion kills an innocent passenger and maims the unknowing driver. Dave Andrusko National Right to Life News 3/07 August 5, 2007 Page 8
