3 Dear Friends, I believe in a relational model of church where people work at being in real, living, human relationships with each other; where we can experience acceptance, compassion and care, as well as celebrate the joy of being alive and in love. It is also a place where we bear with each other, put up with, excuse, and forgive each other, loving each other even when we don t feel loving sometimes. That s what it s like to be a family. The love of Jesus is not just a feeling. It is a decision, a decision to love even when we don t feel so loving. That s what Jesus did on the cross. I m sure it didn t feel good hanging from the cross, yet he continued to love even those who tortured and put him to death. In that is the heart of our salvation: The Sacred Heart of Jesus. We are called to make a home in the Heart of Jesus, a place where all people can dwell and find a home, and can experience what it means to be part of the family of God. This relational model of church is certainly captured in the words of Jesus that begin our gospel today: My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me...no one can take them out of my hand...the Father and I are one. We are baptized and called into that unity of life and love, into a personal relational experience of God, a place where we come to know even as we are known, a place of intimacy, a place where we need not fear, a place where we can be secure and find peace, joy, and love; a place we can call home. It is my fervent prayer that all people could experience St. Thomas as a spiritual home, a place where people can form relationships, sink roots, grow and be supported in their lives and in their relationship with God and one another. That s what I believe it means to be a parish, to be church, to hear the voice of Jesus and to follow The Way. I rejoice with all of you in that Easter Experience of hearing the voice of the Risen Lord, of following Christ and experiencing God s presence here with you at St. Thomas the Apostle. The love of Jesus is not just a feeling Fourth Sunday of Easter April 25, 2010 I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth. Acts 13:47b Welcome Guests and Visitors! St. Thomas is here to companion you on your faith journey. Come with us as we grow in closeness to Christ through liturgy, music, faith formation, special events, and countless ways to be Companions on the Journey. Would you like to become a Parishioner? Join us at during the Ministry Fair after the following Masses: Sunday, May 23, 7:30, 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. in the Gathering Area.

4 Worship Commission Wine Through fermentation, yeasts convert the sugar in grapes into carbon dioxide and other byproducts, including alcohol. There is obvious energy in this transformation. Fermenting grapes hiss and fizz with potentially explosive force. In Christian tradition, wine has become symbolic for the power of the Holy Spirit. God s Spirit is the lifeblood of the body of Christ. Jesus commands us to drink deeply. On Pentecost, the disciples drank so much of the Spirit that bystanders thought they were drunk. The signs of the Spirit, such as fire and wind, share qualities in common. Like wine, they can be agents of destruction or forces for creativity and delight. During Eastertime it seems as if the earth itself is filled with these signs. Orchards and vineyards blossom. Sunshine pours down and gentle breezes blow. And, on occasion, there are windy thunderstorms and even worse. Keep people in your prayers whose lives are disrupted when the weather turns wild. Throughout Eastertime, celebrate the Spirit with kites and windsocks, with maywine and sweet liqueurs, with fiery barbecues and flickering candles. Make of this season a time to turn away from destruction and to renew your powers of creativity and delight Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications, 1800 North Hermitage Avenue, Chicago IL 60622; ; Text by Peter Mazar. The Doorway of the Mysterious Feminine is called the Root of Heaven-and-Earth. Lingering like gossamer, it has only a hint of existence. And yet when you draw upon it, it is inexhaustible. Lao Tzu May Crowning On May 8, our mother Mary will be celebrated in a special way. At 4:00 p.m., the Rosary will be recited and immediately following the 4:30 Mass, there will be a May Crowning! You are invited to bring a flower to present to Mary during the crowning. Pentecost Taizé There will be a Taizé Style Pentecost Prayer Monday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lighthouse. Please plan to come and experience this beautiful prayer, felt through the Taizé music. Presider s Schedule May 1/2 4:30 Fr. Joel Fortier *1st Communion Mass 7:30 Fr. Pat Brennan 9:00 Fr. 5 Pray For Our Parish Fourth Sunday of Easter O God, the fountain of joy and of peace, into the hands of your risen Son you have entrusted the destinies of people and nations. Sustain us with the power of your Spirit, that, amid the increasing changes of life in this world, we may never become separated from Christ the Good Shepherd, who guides us to springs of life giving water. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen. Known as the Little Flower, she was canonized in 1925 and made a Doctor of the Church in St. Therese said, Everything is a grace because everything is God s gift. Tickets can be purchased for dinner only for $ Come support and acknowledge Fr. Joel for his years of living and preaching Social Justice. C.A.R.E. CORNER As we continue reading through the Acts of the Apostles today, we have shifted from the witness of Peter and the original disciples to the witness of a new group of disciples, which included Barnabas and Paul. Like all good disciples should, they were doing what the Lord commanded them to do; they were being... an instrument of salvation. And in spite of the challenges that accompanied their calling, they were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. This fourth Sunday of Easter is also known as Good Shepherd Sunday. Our brief Gospel passage points to Jesus as our Good Shepherd: the One who knows us; the One we are supposed to follow; the One who is one with the Father. And what is the benefit of following Christ as shepherd versus following another leader? Jesus tells us in today s Gospel: I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. Such a promise can only be fulfilled by God. For a full slate of workshops, events and registration information, search Peace Day 2010 on the St. Thomas website. LAST WEEK TO SIGN UP! 11 Migration Initiative Update For those expecting to sign postcards on immigration reform last weekend, we needed to defer that activity to a later time due to the Bishop s Appeal and everything else that was taking place that weekend. We will provide a full opportunity in early June. You may remember Ramon Zepeda from St. Nicholas, who gave a witness talk at some masses during our Migration Initiative kick-off. His daughter, Michelle, traveled last month to the Immigration Reform rally in Washington D.C. Below is an excerpt from her reflection. More than 200,000 people linked arms together for immigrant rights. The people in that march were there not because of a single piece of legislation, they were there because of their stories - stories of hope for a better tomorrow. I saw people of many backgrounds come together, Asians, Caucasians, Africans, Latinos, At one point I remember standing alone and looking at the crowd. Chills went down my spine as I saw thousands of people as passionate for the same cause as I am. I felt so small, but at the same time incredibly powerful. I was proud to be part of creating change, but even more proud to be doing it with all of these other people whom I did not know. As we started walking through the residential area, I expected to experience some backlash. It did not happen. What I saw instead is something I will never forget. People came out of their homes cheering and waving; taking photographs. Another family came out of their home with water that they gave to us, which felt so good after a long, hot day. Among us we handed the water to those who needed it the most. I know I was very thirsty but I gave it to an elderly man next to me, whom I did not know. This is what America is all about. Michelle Zepeda Mother s Day Card Eileen Gleam is a parishioner who is the Co-Chair for a Project Love Mother s Day Card action. The mission of Project Love is to provide financial aid to pregnant women and new mothers in need. They will be offering a beautiful Mother s Day card for a free will donation at the Masses next weekend. More Earthquake Relief from Long Beach Hurricane Katrina, in addition to destroying the St. Thomas church in Long Beach, also destroyed their school. The school has since been rebuilt. Just as the St. Thomas Long Beach Parish sent us a donation for Haiti earthquake relief, so did their Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic School. We wanted to join our effort to help you with earthquake relief for Haiti. Our sixth graders have done odd jobs to earn the enclosed donation. Please accept this check for $145 from the sixth grade class of Saint Vincent de Paul to use for your mission in Haiti. We thank you for the help you gave us in Our prayers are with you. We are praying for all God s children. Church Women United of Naperville Invites you to MAY FRIENDSHIP DAY - Living the Vision Friday, May 7, St. Thomas - Lighthouse 11:30 am Registration. 11:45 Catered Chef's Salad Luncheon followed by small group discussion and worship. The screening site is the Deacon s office, the first office left as you exit the Church (West Wing). All health conscious individuals are welcome. Call your Parish Nurses at x 104 or 140 with questions, concerns, or to schedule another time. From Our Parish Faith Community Nurse Healing Life s Hurts Here are 10 steps to handling life s hurts: 1. Recognize a problem exists. We cannot begin dealing with any problem in our life until we acknowledge the issue. Only then do we have something concrete to deal with. 2. Acknowledge the pain you feel or caused. Our emotions play a very important role in our wellbeing. Emotions are good! It shows we are human and that we have a heart. When we keep our anger, hurt and other feelings bottled up, we prevent ourselves from being the loving humans that God created. 3. Do one small, concrete thing to create change. As humans, change is a difficult thing for us. It causes us to stretch ourselves, to go into the unknown, to do the unfamiliar or uncomfortable. But if we start small and are consistent, the small change will become familiar and part of who we are. 4. Make amends if appropriate. As difficult as it may be, saying that you are sorry, is one of the most freeing experiences you can have. It allows you to acknowledge your wrong-doing and to evaluate your actions so as to prevent a future occurrence. 5. Remember, you always have choices. You may not have a choice in what happens to you, but you do have a choice in how you react or respond to what happens in your life. 6. Pray for strength, courage, and healing. The Lord heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:2,3) 7. Share what you ve learned with others. Sharing gives hope to others who are going through life s healing journey. It helps them to know that they are not alone and that they too can make it through difficult times. 8. Don t give up hope or extinguish it in others. Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and Nazi death camp survivor, wrote about prisoners who were constantly, comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. To him, these generous souls offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken but one thing: the last of human freedoms-to chose one s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one s own way. 9. Forgive yourself, forgive others. Forgiveness is NOT condoning, excusing, minimizing, forgetting, justifying, trusting or reconciling. Forgiveness IS however, a path to freedom. The one who forgives refuses to be controlled by the injury Presented by Wellspring Wellspring will present a discussion entitled Caregiving: Taking Care of Yourself While Caring for Others Tuesday, April 27 7:00 p.m. Are you caring for your older parents? Young children? Children with special needs? Are you remembering to take care of yourself? Join us on Tuesday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. for a conversation with Joan Guest, MSW LCSW, a counselor from Samaritan Interfaith. For questions or to reserve a spot, contact Rose Grumbine x140.
