3 Dear Friends, It is Tuesday as I prepare this letter for Sunday s bulletin, one of the most beautiful days of the summer! I think I m going to play hookie today and enjoy it, and I encourage you to do that from time to time as well. You have to grab summer! I think these kind of summer days echo the gospel today very well: Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened and I will give you rest We all need times, spaces, and people in our lives who help us experience the healing presence and peace of Jesus in our lives. It behooves us to leave behind the tumult of our minds and lives... Summer, the beauty of creation, and good friends surely help us to do that. That s what these days are for. Jesus tells us that the presence of God is hidden sometimes from the wise and the learned and is revealed to the little ones. It behooves us to leave behind the tumult of our minds and lives sometimes, just to take time to be with Jesus; to be simple, to be one of the little ones ; to go to that place of peace and presence where Christ dwells within us by the power of the Spirit. St. Paul assures us in the second reading today that the Spirit of God dwells in us, and he says, If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies as well, through the Spirit that dwells in you. So if your mortal body, soul, or spirit feels tired or needs life in any way, go to that place of peace and Presence where Christ dwells within you. That place in the back of your mind, outside of and away from the tumult of our dualistic minds and bad choices to find the peace and presence of Christ that ameliorates, reconciles, unites and heals everything in us. It s an easy place to get to, just play hookie sometime on these great summer days, especially with a friend, or just alone, but be sure to grab summer! Christ is there waiting for you. We know how precious and limited summer time is! God Bless you during these wonderful days of re-creation and especially on this Fourth of July weekend! Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 3, 2011 Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 Welcome Guests and Visitors! We re so glad you re here and invite you to walk the path of faith with us. Our goal is to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God flows through us to all people. We believe the church is the sacrament of God s saving presence in the world. Would you like to become a Parishioner? Join us in the gym for Welcome Sunday after the following Masses: Sunday, July 10: 9:00 and 10:45am Have a Happy Fourth! Peace and Love to all,

4 Worship Commission Roman Missal Changes Praying with Body, Mind, and Spirit from the USCCB Praying in Unison In the Mass, the worshiping assembly prays in one voice, speaking or singing together the words of the prayers. By saying the same words at the same time, we act as what we truly are one Body united in Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism. Singing By its very nature, song has both an individual and a communal dimension. Thus, it is no wonder that singing together in church expresses so well the sacramental presence of God to his people (USCCB, Sing to the Lord, no. 2). As we raise our voices as one in the prayers and dialogues, most especially in the Eucharistic Prayer, as well as the other hymns and songs, we each lend our individual voices to the great hymn of praise and thanksgiving to the Triune God. Beginning next week: Scripture and the Mass Presider s Schedule July 9/10 Saturday 4:30 pm Fr. Pat Brennan Sunday 7:30 am Fr. Joel Fortier 9:00 am Fr. Bob Colaresi 10:45 am Fr. Dof Arty * Presider schedule is subject to change. REMINDER The Sunday 6:30 p.m. Mass resumes Sept 10 at 6:00 p.m. S cripture Challenge This section will appear throughout the summer. Check with your family and friends to share your answers! The questions will be based on the Sunday readings. What does carrying a heavy burden mean in your life? How does humility and the acceptance of God s grace lighten your load? July 3, 2011 Page 4

5 Pray For Our Parish Dear Lord, On this Independence Day I am reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my freedom was purchased with a very high price. My freedom cost others their very lives. Lord, today, bless those who have served and continue to give their lives for my freedom. With favor and bounty meet their needs and watch over their families. Help me to live my life in a way that glorifies you, Lord. Give me the strength to be a blessing in someone else's life today, and grant me the opportunity to lead others into the freedom that can be found in knowing Christ. Amen Please Pray for our Men and Women Serving in the Military Our parish community would like to recognize and remember the following individuals in prayer: U.S. Air Force Lt. 6 Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission Faith: Outward Bound For many, summer is a time for taking trips out of our comfortable routine to experience new places and faces. A faith journey is like that, too. A constant theme in the Bible is Get up and go, leave your usual ways and places and go where God calls you. Several ministries in Adult Faith Formation need you to companion others on their faith journeys, learning together what God wants of us. Please consider giving your time and talent to: ALPHA An introduction to practical, everyday Christianity. A 10-week series on Wednesdays of dinner, a topical video and small group discussion, AL:PHA needs people for both consistent and occasional roles: kitchen overseer, food provider, hospitality, table host, or prayer facilitator. Marriage Preparation You, too, can assist in founding a new church, that is, a new domestic church, preparing and grounding couples in beginning and maintaining a Catholic marriage. Marriage Preparation Retreats (offered 3x per year) need day of help. Also urgently needed are mentor couples who meet with engaged couples to talk about and share experiences on the joys and challenges of married life. Training and support available. Baptism Preparation How best to get a growing family off to a good start in the life of faith? Assist in monthly evening baptism preparation sessions (you choose how often), or serve as a baptism host, welcoming families and assisting the presider at baptismal liturgies. Training provided. Do you feel a nudge to check these out further or to make a commitment? Please contact Chari Rosales in the Adult Faith Formation Office at x138 or Onward and upward! C.A.R.E. CORNER We are fortunate as Catholic Christians to have the faith rituals we call the sacraments. If you recall the definition of sacraments, they are signs of God s grace, instituted by Christ, entrusted to the Church, to fill us with Divine life and to make the love of God present in us and the world. The Eucharist is a repeatable sacrament that allows us regular, ongoing personal encounters with the living God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1374) reminds us of what our faith teaches about the Eucharist: In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really and substantially contained. As this column has tried to capture over the past several weeks, our Church from the beginning and throughout the ages, has always believed the Eucharist really is Christ, up close and personal. 10 Administration Commission Jobs Ministry Weekly Networking Meeting Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. (after the 8:30 a.m. Liturgy) Gym July Keynote Speaker Presentation Wednesday, July 20, 7:00 p.m. Getting and Retaining Employee Referrals Robert Rosell will demonstrate the importance of having employee referrals as part of your current and future employment searches. He will discuss how to find employee referrals using two virtually unknown free LinkedIn features, and then go over common elements to have in an introduction message to an employee referral. Finally, he will talk about what to say when you meet a potential employee referral. Robert Rosell's professional career has spanned more than twenty years across two careers. The first was IT where he went the route from programming through Senior Systems Analyst across multiple technologies and platforms. When Robert joined Motorola in 2000, he moved into quality building Quality Management Systems (QMSs) from scratch for new technologies. Shortly after Robert got laid off in 2009, he joined IL work- Net and became a Volunteer Team Leader there. He then helped contribute to the development and continual improvement regarding all content associated with the IL worknet program. While continuing to work IL worknet, Robert developed a new workshop called "Getting and Retaining Employee Referrals" with a networking logo of Social Media Emotional Intelligence (SMEI). He then found his way back to IT with a focus on health care. Robert did this by using the ER technique after previously landing earlier this year at Electromotive Diesel (EMD) (March 2010) using the same method. As he was leaving EMD to go to Baxter, Bob got two of his former managers at Motorola hired at EMD by being a referral for them. St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville, IL 60563, Friday meeting formats include announcements, speaker presentation, and 2 rounds of networking. Prepare your elevator speech, and bring enough handbills to pass out to 20 fellow networkers. Wednesday night is speaker only, no formal networking.
