3 Dear Friends, I love today s gospel. Mark narrates well the story of Jesus calming the storm. As the storm arises and strengthens, the waves break over the boat and the disciples become afraid. They wake Jesus and ask, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? These very disciples have given up everything to follow Jesus, but they are still anxious. They don t know and understand everything about the one they have chosen to follow. As disciples of Christ today, we also question our faith at times. But during the storms that sweep through our lives, we must continue to choose to live in relationship with the one that has the power to calm the seas. Realizing our destiny to live in a right relationship of love with Christ only comes when we can reach out in love to every one of our brothers and sisters not only those we hold in great esteem, but also those that we sometimes fail to see and know. It is the challenge and task of a lifetime, the highest ideal to strive for, and standard to live by. It is good that we celebrate Father s Day today. Our fathers play a vital role in helping form this relationship with Christ in our lives. The call to live in relationship to discover our true nature and destiny is not easy. Not only do we celebrate the goodness of our fathers and all the sacrifices they have made out of love for us, we also extend to them the grace and forgiveness we each need when we do not always live so perfectly in relationship with one another. We celebrate all of that today as we live our faith together in our homes, community and church. We keep faith with the Lord and each other in such ways. It is the way we live our Baptismal faith and find fulfillment in our very being. Thank you for the way you give such a powerful witness to Christ here at St. Thomas. Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? In love and relationship with you, Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time June Whoever is in Christ is a new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Welcome... Guests and Visitors! St. Thomas is here to companion you on your faith journey. Come with us as we grow in closeness to Christ through liturgy, music, faith formation, special events, and countless ways to make a difference. Would you like to become a Parishioner? Come to the Gathering Area on July 12, after the 9:00 and 10:45 Mass and join us for Welcome Sunday.

4 Worship Commission O God, by whose Word the universe is being created, By whose brooding presence humankind comes to populate the earth, By Whose tender compassion all persons are called, Called, and recalled through your Word to relationship with you: We thank you for all those who before us have lived in the faith and now, triumphant live with you. Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that at present remain unseen. It was for faith that our ancestors were commended. Thank you for the faith of the founders of this congregation: With so many witnesses in a great cloud on every side of us, we call on your abiding attention, love, and guidance that we may be your faithful people through another day, another week, another year. Flames of the Spirit,Ruth Duck Jesus said: Thomas, you became a believer because you saw me. Blessed are they who have not seen and have believed. Happy Anniversary St. Thomas! Next weekend we will celebrate our 25 th Anniversary at each Mass. The actual date was July 1, 1984 at Hill Middle School with Bishop Joseph Imesch and Fr. Jim Curtin. We were just 300 families! Please allow time for cake and fellowship following each Liturgy in the Gathering Area. Father s Day Speakers The text for each Father s Day speaker can be found on the St. Thomas website, Father s Day Blessing Loving God, as a father loves, guides and provides for his children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these men in their fatherhood, Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their family and faith community may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect and love. We ask this blessing in Jesus' name, through the power of the Holy Spirit, one God, with you, forever and ever. Amen. Presider s Schedule June 27/28 4:30, Fr. Joel Fortier; Deacon, Mike Barrett 7:30, Fr. Joel Fortier; Deacon, Jim Breen 9:00, Fr. Bob Colaresi; Deacon, Will Worden 10:45, Fr. Fritz Louis; Deacon, Larry Kearney 12:15, Fr. A continuing drop in attendance at this Mass combined with a growing popularity for the 6:30 p.m. Mass prompts this change. Our resources of time and talent will be better utilized with the new schedule. Thank you! June 21, 2009 Page 4

Pope Benedict XVI Message for the World Day of the Sick February 11, 2009 C.A.R.E. CORNER We are exploring what ancient peoples considered as signs of God s presence. And the story of Noah gives us a very visible sign. Chapter 9 of Genesis relates the interaction between God and Noah after the flood waters had receded. God promised that never again would there be another flood that would devastate the earth and all living creatures upon it. God referred to this promise as a covenant with Noah and all his descendants. And the sign God gave of this covenant was a rainbow for all ages to come. The rainbow was meant to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Interestingly, God said when the rainbow appeared,... I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings... Apparently, God sees the rainbow as a sign to Himself and to us. How about those of us living today? Do we see and acknowledge the same sign? The First Five Centuries of the Catholic Church How do Parish Communities today relate to the first Church Communities? What happened at the Early Councils? How did the hierarchy develop? Why and How did Creeds come to be? Join Chari Rosales for a tour through these stages of the developing Church. Thursdays, June 18, 25 & July 2, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sts. 7 Religious Education What a Safari! The St. Thomas Vacation Bible School, Scripture Safari, had the theme this year of On a Joyful Safari with Mary. It was a fabulous week full of energy, fun and enthusiasm filled with scripture, special speakers, puppet shows, songs, crafts and games! It closed last weekend on Saturday at the 4:30 liturgy. Joel Fortier Tuesday: The Visitation Speaker: Patti Dougherty Wednesday: The Nativity of our Lord Speaker: Deacon Larry Kearney Thursday: The Presentation Speaker: Fr. Thank you to each and every one of them. Extra special thanks to our Safari Leader, Molly Petersen; she is an outstanding safari leader! Look for examples of our time together on the bulletin boards in the Ministry Center. Finally, Scripture Safari is tentatively scheduled for June 14-18, We hope to see everyone again next summer! 8 Service Commission Outreach & Social Justice Death Penalty Action in Illinois At the end of session in Springfield, Senate Resolution 297 passed the Senate. The Catholic Conference of Illinois signed in support of it. The resolution directs the IL Criminal Justice Authority to conduct a study of the costs of the death penalty in Illinois and a parallel study of the costs of sentencing persons for first degree murder to life imprisonment. A preliminary report of the study is to be given to the Senate during the fall 2009 veto session and a final report and recommendations by January 29, Also, there was another Senate Resolution (SR 260) that was introduced to abolish the death penalty. However that was not called for a vote in order for this cost study to be conducted first. The House Bill to abolish the death penalty (HB 262) did pass a House committee earlier this spring but was not called for a vote before the full House. Father Thomas Berry, an earth scholar, and the patron of the St. Thomas Care With God s Creation group, passed away on June 1 in Greensboro, NC, at the age of 94. A member of the Passionist order, founded to teach people how to pray, Berry went on to become an influential eco-theologian. He was one of the most profound thinkers in the environmental movement. His books included "The Dream of the Earth," "The Universe Story" and "The Great Work", which explore the place where ecology and theology connect. He taught that the evolution of the universe was a primary revelation of the Ultimate Mystery from which all things have emerged. Kermes Parish Fair at St. Nicholas JUNE 27 & 28 Please see today s insert for directions to St. Nicholas and other information regarding this celebration. Additional Request: New backpacks for the children of St. Nicholas School and Parish. Please drop off in the bins in the Narthex and Gathering Area any time before June 27. Thank you. Jobs Ministry Feedback I live in Chicago, IL. and I am a member at Christ Church of Oak Brook. I attended your job ministry group, for the first time, June 5, I was extremely impressed with how well organized it is and how smoothly everything seemed to be (from beginning to end). I want to compliment what an excellent job Ben did moderating the June 5, meeting. He was extremely professional, and I was very impressed by his leadership skills. The Guest Speaker did an excellent job regarding her topic: Emotional Intelligence. I met some very interesting individuals during the networking portion. The Job Ministry Team at St. Thomas has a very positive reputation, and this was the reason I wanted to see for myself. I was not disappointed, and it exceeded my expectations. I am looking forward to attending, again and again, until I "land" my next job opportunity. May God continue to bless you and your ministry as you continue to make a difference in the community and in God's people. Peace WORKS We know that not one step, not one seed, not one action that is carried out in the spirit of nonviolence is ever lost. It bears fruit in the history of nations and of the world.
