3 From the (NEW!) Pastor s Desk Greetings to the family of St. Thomas the Apostle! I am delighted to be here with you and look forward to serving you as your new pastor. In the 19 years I have been a pastor (eight years at St. Charles Borromeo in Bensenville and 11 years at St. Michael in Wheaton), I have written a weekly article for the Sunday bulletin. It is my intention to continue doing so in my pastorate at St. Thomas the Apostle. Sometimes my article will be a further reflection on the Sunday readings. Other times it may be newsy and informational or just some personal thoughts. Since this is my introductory weekend and I am speaking at all the masses to introduce myself, I won t repeat my introduction in this article (you can read my introductory homily on our website), but will give a brief reflection on the feast we celebrate today The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. It is a special kind of joy when children use their first word to call out their parent s name. Indeed, this joy can become so coveted that mother and father will gather in front of their child, calling out and vying for this first word. Say it, say it: Mama. No, no: Dadda, Dadda. And, as parents soon discover, when this name is spoken, many, many more words soon proceed. The world of speech is opened through a parent s name. In today s gospel we hear a story that, in some sense, turns this order over on its head. When Zechariah confirms the name of his son as he writes it out on the tablet, suddenly the previously dumb man can begin to speak. He immediately gives blessing to God, for he has received a paradoxical miracle: The father s world of speech has been opened up through the son s name. Such a reversal of order marks the nativity of John the Baptist, who eventually in his work would herald the beginning of a new world order. This order, likewise, would overturn traditional chronological ideas, so that John might say, After me comes a man who existed before me. Such is the sometimes upside-down world of the kingdom of God, for which John was to prepare a way. Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 24, 2012 Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. Acts 13:25 Welcome Guests and Visitors! We re so glad you re here and invite you to walk the path of faith with us. 6 Faith and Formation Commission Adult C.A.R.E. CORNER Mark Your Calendar for our Parish Picnic August 26 Noon 3:00 Can you help? Please contact Patti Dougherty or ext The last precept of our Church is that we each do our part to help support and strengthen the Church. Since we are the Church, any effort we give along these lines benefits more than just the institution or our church building. Our parish community is an extension of our family. Here at St. Thomas, we like to define stewardship as the sharing of our time, talents and treasures. By supporting our parish Church with our physical and financial resources, we ensure that our community has what it needs in order to offer worship, to sustain our ministers, and to perform good works of charity for those in need both within and outside of our parish community. Given that our parish family also belongs to the worldwide Church, following Church precepts helps us to participate in the rich faith tradition of our universal Church. Participation provides us with the nourishment we need to live a moral and Christian life. Church precepts are not intended to be a burden. They are meant to be a way of life. And Christianity is indeed a unique way of life. Question of the Week... When am I a messenger of God s love? Coming Soon! High School religious education registration packets will be available in July. Details of the high school program are being finalized and will be explained in the registration packet. Youth Ministry Corner My family and I just returned from a few days at DisneyWorld. If you ve been there, you know that you can spend a LOT of time waiting for the popular rides and attractions. As we were waiting what seemed like an eternity to go on the new Toy Story attraction, I was aware of how much thought and creativity Disney puts into the planning of the spaces where you wait. It is as if the waiting is also part of the Disney magic experience. Sometimes what makes the waiting bearable is attitude. We wait for so many things in life college acceptance letters, test scores, text messages, phone calls, job offers, red lights to change to green, summer to be here, school to start, and the Cubs to be in first place! I returned from DisneyWorld much more aware of my attitude during my waiting times. At Mass, after we pray the Lord s Prayer as a faith community, the presider continues to pray and says, keep us free from all anxiety as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I think the key is joyful hope. Our lives will be a lot of waiting and if we can wait in joyful hope, keeping our eyes fixed on WHOM we are waiting for, that time will be magical! You are in my thoughts and prayers! Blessings, Peggy Aurora Mission Trip Recap On June 15 and 16, St. Thomas teens and adults took part in the Aurora Mission Trip. This experience is done in conjunction with an organization called Rebuilding Together. During the two days, volunteers worked on two homes in Aurora painting, cleaning, drywalling, building stairs, replacing floor tiles, installing new kitchen cabinets, and doing yard clean-up. Time was also spent praying and reflecting on Catholic social teaching and the dignity of each person. It was a wonderful experience and would not have been possible without the help of Maddie Blaha, Sean Campbell, Nicole Chase, Victoria Dimonte, Devin Jacobs, Nicole Marcus, Colin McGarel, Danny McGarel, Allison Mecaskey, Ryan Mecaskey, Hannah Michaeu, Donovan O Grady, Zach Ruvaric, Caroline Saxon, Lauren Tropinski, Hannah Wernecke, Jack Wernecke, Karen Blaha, Jim Campbell, Maureen Mecaskey, Gail Micheau, and Randy and Marya Wernecke. Thank you so much!!! Upcoming Mission Trips There are two mission trip opportunities for St. Thomas high school students in July. St. Thomas teens are going to Washington DC July 14 through 22 and to Nicaragua July 25 through August 2. The Nicaragua trip is in need of an additional female chaperone and both trips still have openings for more teens. Is God calling you? Please contact Peggy Goralski ( , Ext. 123 or pgoralski@stapostle.org ) if you are interested in learning more. Page 7 June 24, 2012

Gaby De La Cruz Not Selected to Receive Handicapped Accessible Van Gaby is a St. Thomas teenager with an incurable neurological condition that has required over 40 brain surgery operations. He is forced to live lying on his back and endures constant pain. He has a strong faith in God. His personal motto is: Failure is not an option! Gaby is just now recovering from his latest brain surgery. Many of you voted on-line to help him win a handicapped accessible van. He did get to the finals, but a review committee awarded the three vans to other families. Beth, Gaby s mother, indicated that the three families were all very deserving and thanks everyone that helped Gaby get to the finals. The St. Thomas Outreach and Social Justice Outreach and Social Justice (OSJ) Ministry has asked Beth to look into possible ways to adapt their current van to become handicapped accessible. If any parishioner has any insight or expertise in this area, please contact OSJ (Mike, x121, mryder@stapostle.org). Page 9 June 24, 2012
