The mission of our Church is to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. And that good news consists of forgiveness, salvation and eternal life. If we don t share that news, if we don t evangelize, our Church would cease to exist. That s why another precept of the Church calls each member to join in the missionary spirit and work of the Church. The call to evangelization begins in the home. The Catholic Church views marriage as a sacrament because it calls a man and a woman into a covenantal relationship. Another precept of the Church is to observe the laws regarding marriage in order to protect the family. Protecting marriage also protects children who are the future of Christianity. We are asked to provide religious training for our children to ensure that the perpetuation of the good news does not stop with the next generation. June 17, 2012, Page 6

8 Service Commission Outreach & Social Justice On April 12, the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a document, "Our First, Most Cherished Liberty, outlining the bishops concerns over threats to religious freedom, both at home and abroad. The bishops called for a Fortnight for Freedom, a 14-day period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom, from June 21-July 4. The fourteen days from June 21 the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this fortnight for freedom a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action would emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. St. Thomas Fortnight for Freedom Initiative A number of St. Thomas parishioners have put together a series of Fortnight for Freedom activities, centered in prayer, and providing opportunities for education and action. Parishioners are urged to educate themselves on the current issues, and take action based on our Catholic Social Teachings Prayer A Fortnight of Prayer for Freedom Novena each day after the 8:30 a.m. Mass (See insert in today s bulletin) Education Go to Fortnight4Freedom.org and read Our First, Most Cherished Liberty Dialogue Attend an information and dialogue session at St. Thomas on Wednesday evening, June 27 from 7:00 8:00 PM. The featured speaker is David Specia, Director of Lay Ministries from the diocese of Joliet. Action There will be an opportunity to join the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network. Sports Equipment and Game Collection The St. Thomas Lakota Indian Initiative is collecting new and gently used sports equipment and board games and puzzles (all pieces included, please). These will be taken to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and used during the Vacation Bible School sponsored by St. Agnes Parish in Manderson, SD in July. Sports equipment needed includes bats and gloves, balls of all kinds, frisbees, jump ropes, etc. The age range for St. Agnes Vacation Bible School is 5 to 12 years old. Items can be donated anytime between June 17 and June 30 and can be placed in the marked bins in the Narthex and Gathering Area. A small team from St Thomas will travel to the reservation to deliver the toys and help out with the Vacation Bible School. This will be St. Thomas second trip to the reservation and a way to continue building a relationship with the people in the parish of St. Agnes and the surrounding area. Make Sense of the Medicare Maze Are you approaching 65 years of age? Are you confused about Medicare? Are you over 65 years of age and still confused about Medicare? Then attend a Medicare Made Clear meeting presided by parishioner Stephen Clark on Wednesday, June 20 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the St. Thomas Lighthouse and find the answers to these (and other!) questions: What is Original Medicare and are there other options? What are Medicare Parts A, B, C and D? Are prescriptions covered? How much will it cost? Are there deadlines to enroll? Pro-Life Celebrates Dads This Father s Day weekend our Pro-Life Ministry is celebrating Dads, grandfathers, and other men that serve as role models for our youth! 9 Pastoral Care Life Lessons from the Garden Consider the dandelion. Reviled by many as an insistent, bothersome weed, it nevertheless continues to proudly display its pert, bright yellow self in lawns and gardens everywhere, thriving in the face of adversity. Where, in our own lives, do we face adversity? How do we carry ourselves through it head down, beating ourselves up or feeling defensive and resentful? Or do we lift our head up and face the world like the dandelion, sure of our intrinsic worth, knowing our gifts to the world, even if the world doesn t necessarily recognize them? For those who know how to look and wait, the garden teems with other such life lessons. As summer blooms this year, consider the wise teachings of your garden. If you don t have a conventional garden, a container garden on your porch or potted plants in your home still offer valuable lessons. Here are a few: It s OK to be imperfect. Trying to grow the perfect rose, or the perfect tomato, is an exhausting, never ending quest for flawlessness. Imperfect roses are still beautiful and imperfect tomatoes still burst with flavor just like we humans. With our myriad imperfections, we still contribute our own beauty and zest to the world. Pruning improves growth. Removing old habits that don t serve us opens new possibilities for growth in areas that do serve us. Pay more attention to your health than your appearance. As author William Longgood wrote, Over fertilized plants may be beautiful but are otherwise useless, like people whose energies are devoted so completely to their appearance that there is no other development. Regular maintenance is important. Isn t it so much harder to clear an overgrown jungle of a garden that to regularly pull encroaching weeds? Think of the clutter that can accumulate in our houses, the extra pounds that are harder to lose than to keep off in the first place, the overwhelm or illness that can result from too little selfcare. Be careful of predators. Just as the squirrel will dig up your carefully planted bulbs, it doesn t take long for predators to damage your careful cultivation, in the garden and in life. What toxic relationships, substances and emotions are feeding on your energy and taking away from what you have to give to others? Don t be afraid to try new approaches. The garden is an incredible laboratory for experimentation. What new approaches do those old problems in your life need? Trial and error is one of life s best teachers. Not trying is the domain of hopelessness. Transform your trash. The compost heap turns rotting plant waste into a treasure pile of rich, organic fertilizer. What negative patterns in your life can you work to transform? When do the hard work of breaking these patterns down, the results are often rich and beneficial to our lives. Everyone is unique and needed. Everything in nature has a function that is interdependent. As famous naturalist John Muir said, When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. Rock, plant, bird, bee-even bacteria in the soil--all occupy a vital place in life. What is your purpose, your gift to the world? Finally, but most importantly Have faith. Plant a seed, water it, and trust that it will grow. Similarly, believe that the shifts you make in your life, the dreams you hold dear, will fully blossom if you nourish and protect them, believing that the spirit of God is there to nourish and protect you. Something important happens every day. Take time to notice the little everyday miracles in your gardens and in your life. *reprinted:samaritan Interfaith Inspirations Page 9 June 17, 2012

10 Administration Commission St. Thomas the Apostle JOBS MINISTRY JUNE KEYNOTE SPEAKER Wednesday, June 20, 7:00 pm: "The Balancing Act - Being AND Doing" Deborah Leoni Deborah's presentation will support you in gaining clarity around the significance of who you are being in the world versus all that you are doing and how it affects what you are manifesting. Everyone will benefit from this presentation as it will bring individual awareness around the choices you are making and how those choices are affecting yourself and everyone around you. You will leave this presentation with clarity, a sense of balance, hope and a heightened awareness of a bigger vision for your life. Bring your spouse as this will bring these benefits to both of you and is our way of gifting you during this summer season! Deborah Leoni, owner of Insight Out Life Coaching, is a motivational speaker, life coach and meditation instructor. Her mission is to offer a safe space to explore truth, to discover and express one's authentic self, and to assist clients in taking dramatic actions to foster transformation to make a difference by creating the life of their dreams.
