3 Dear Friends, With the Feast of the Epiphany today, we begin a series of epiphanies or manifestations of Christ the beginning revelation or Epiphany of Christ s glory. The joyful thing is that the glory of Christ continues to be revealed in us. Just as Mary heard and received the Word of God s love and was the first The glory of Christ continues to be revealed in us. one to carry the gospel, so now we who have heard and received the Word of God s love, carry it in us. As we live, speak and carry the Word of God s love to one another and to the world, we continue the manifestation and incarnation of God s love in our world. So this feast of the Epiphany is the beginning of the process we now continue in our own lives, of incarnating God s love and being the light of the world. We do that, of course, by the witness of our lives lived in love and service of God s people just as Jesus did. Isn t it wonderful that we are caught up in the same process of glorification and that we share the mission and ministry of Jesus. We continue to celebrate who we are as we enter 2010 and we continue to journey together, following Christ s direction. Through this new year, may you feel the joy of God s transforming love revealing more and more to you and to the world who you truly are. We celebrate the feast of lights today by letting the light of God s love shine in us and here in the faith community of St. Thomas. Happy Feast Day Happy Epiphany! Love, The Epiphany of the Lord January 3, 2010 They opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11b Welcome Guests and Visitors! We re so glad you re here and invite you to walk the path to faith with us. The community of St. Thomas strives to grow closer to Christ in all that we do. We care for one another and together with Christ, we are Companions on the Journey. Would you like to become a Parishioner? 4 Worship Commission Christmas Tree Help Needed! Come help up take down the beautiful decorations. Many hands make for EASY work! We will gather around 6:00 pm January 11. We had many hands last year and had it completed in under an hour. The Christmas Season In our Roman Catholic tradition Christmas lasts much more than a day or a week. We celebrate a full season from December 24 until the Liturgy of the Baptism of the Lord January 10. This year our Christmas season is almost 3 weeks long. The wisdom of the church allows us to savor, over these days, the saving mystery of Jesus incarnation and the many manifestations of his glory, peace and love in our lives. When the song of the angels is stilled When the star in the sky is gone When the kings have gone home When the shepherds are back with their flocks The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost To heal the broken To feed the hungry To release the prisoner To rebuild the nations To bring peace among people To make music in the heart. Harold Thurman Presider s Schedule Jan 9/10 4:30 Fr. Joel Fortier 7:30 Fr. Pat Brennan 9:00 Fr. Fritz Louis (He s here for a visit!) 10:45 Fr. Joel Fortier 6:30 Fr. Bob Colaresi 20+C+M+B+10 Epiphany, New Year and Blessing of the Home There is a custom of blessing the doors of one s home on Epiphany. The following ritual and prayers could be used to mark this occasion: Gather at the main door of your home. Read Matthew 2:1-12 or Matthew 28:16-20 Write above your door (with chalk): 20 + C + M + B + 10 The letters stand for the names of the Magi: Casper, Melchior and Bathazar. For European Protestants who lived the custom but not the legend, CMB became Christus mansionem beredicat (May Christ bless this house.). Prayer: God of every time and place. God of Bethlehem and Cana, and of Jordan s leaping waters in baptism you bring us into your family. You wed us and embrace us as your beloved As this year comes to a close ay we resolved to keep the doors of our heart and our home open to you and to others. May we fill this place with kindness to one another, with hospitality to guests, and with abundant care for every stranger. By the gentle light of a star, guide home all who seek you on paths of faith, hope and love. Then we will join the angels in proclaiming your praise: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and for ever. Amen. Sing a Christmas carol (i.e. Joy to the World or We Three Kings) January 3, 2010 Page 4

5 Pray For Our Parish Epiphany of Our Lord With a star s radiance, O God, you guided the nations to the Light. In a prophet s words you revealed the mystery of the Messiah s coming. Through the Magi s gifts you unfolded the richness of the Savior s mission. Scatter again the darkness that covers the earth and divides the peoples. Make our hearts thrill anew to see the multitudes carried as sons and daughters in your arms. In Christ and through his gospel draw the ends of the earth into your family, that desperate cultures and warring nations may be gathered together as one. for the sick... Michele Hula- Miller, daughter of Janet Hula Steve Spano, father of Steven Peg Finnegan, friend of John & Eleanor McNicholas Alexandra Ponce de Leon, mother of Ada Casado Judy Loftis, sister of Ed Katzenbach We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us, Your Son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. 6 Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission Soul Searchers Meets Soul Searchers will meet once a month to explore and discover truths in Story of a Soul: Study edition by St. Therese of Lisieux, translated by John Clarke. Therese Martin was born in France in 1873, entered the Carmel of Lisieux at the age of 15 and died at 24. Known as the Little Flower, she was canonized in 1925 and made a Doctor of the Church in St. Therese said, Everything is a grace because everything is God s gift. Whatever be the character of life or its unexpected events to the heart that loves, all is well. The group will discuss Chapter 7, p Soul Searchers will meet on Saturday, January 9 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. in the Rectory Basement. The text is available at the Carmelite Center in Darien and on the website: Hand-outs are available in the pick-up drawer under S. Deacon Will and Mary Maloney are group leaders. Come whenever your schedule allows and enjoy a thought provoking experience. All are welcome to attend this monthly discussion group. C.A.R.E. CORNER We ve all experienced little epiphanies; those a-ha moments when the light bulb clicks on and we come to an understanding we did not previously grasp. Paul talks about a major epiphany in today s second reading from his letter to the Ephesians. In his young adulthood, Paul was a Pharisee, a strict observer of Mosaic Law, who believed God s plan of salvation was for the Jews only. But now, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, Paul accepts the revelation that all people are coheirs and copartners in God s promises. Jesus is savior to all. This kind of wisdom and understanding can come to anyone. It came to the Magi, who were astrologers, pagans and foreigners from a distant land. They knew nothing about Jewish law, the words of the Prophets or the God of Israel. Yet they were willing to undertake a long and treacherous journey, guided only by the light of a star, to find and honor this savior. The Solemnity of the Epiphany reminds us all of our mission as Church, to visibly showcase the light of Christ to the ends of the earth. Welcome guests and visitors, we re so glad you are here! Please visit the information areas located at the entrance to the church and in the gathering area before or after Mass. You will find available materials about the Catholic Church and St. Thomas which may be of interest to you. If you have questions or concerns, and would like to speak with Fr. Joel or another member of staff, there are a variety of ways you can make contact, including signing the guest book, leaving a completed comment card in the provided box, or taking home a staff contact list and making the call at your convenience. Whichever way you choose, we look forward to getting to you know you, and hope to see you again soon! January 3, 2010 Page 6
