3 Dear Friends, Comfort, give comfort to my people, says God, we hear in the first reading today. In the second reading from St. Peter we hear that as we live in the Spirit of Jesus we will be transformed and hasten the coming of the day of God. The old order will pass away... We await new heavens and a new earth. We are to be the new wine skins of the new wine of the Spirit. Jesus calls us beyond mere form to the function of life which gives order, meaning, and form to life. Form follows function. It is the function of the Spirit which is important, it gives life and hastens the coming of the Reign of God. And so we worship the living God Oh, how we wait and long for the fullness of that coming in Spirit and truth. Our form should follow that function. In the gospel, St. Mark tells us about John the Baptist and Jesus marking this difference between form and function. John says, I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Oh, how we wait and long for the fullness of that coming, of a new heaven and earth when the fullness of Christ is revealed and realized, when Christ will be all in all. We hasten that day as we live in the Spirit. Our lives will take from and shape from that. We do it, not by living out of our minds or egos, but out of the presence of Christ within us. In the homily about Maggie Daley, Fr. Jack Wall said she was in touch with the presence of Christ s love within her, and she came from, and lived out of, that place. We are called to do the same, to come from and live out of the place of Christ s love within us, to live in the Spirit. That will give shape and form to our lives as it did for Maggie Daley. It will be the shape and form of Christ, the image of Christ revealed in us. That is what the full revelation of Christ is all about, Christ s second coming, when we and all creation are shot through with glory, caught up in the Spirit, revealing the glory of God, the glory of an only begotten son, Son of God...Son of Man. Christ came to catch us all up in that Spirit, to share the Glory of God. We witness to, reflect, and give God glory by the way we live our lives. Our lives take shape and form from the gospel when we live in the Spirit....he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. Come Lord Jesus, Come! Second Sunday of Advent December 4, 2011 Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. Mark 1:3 Welcome Guests and Visitors! CORNER When our ancient Jewish ancestors gathered for worship, they headed for the Temple in Jerusalem. Known as Solomon s Temple, it was commissioned and built under the supervision of King Solomon around 1000 B. C. But it was destroyed in 587 during the Babylonian conquest of Israel. A later version of the Temple was rebuilt by Herod the Great, beginning in the year 20 B. C. This is the Temple building that Jesus visited when He journeyed to Jerusalem. It was on these grounds that Jesus met with His disciples, preached to whoever would listen, and ultimately lost His cool because of the commerce taking place in what should have been the primary place of worship. We also have a building where we conduct our worship. We call it a church. The word church in Latin is ecclesia, which means an assembly. Ecclesia was used frequently in the Old Testament to refer to an assembly of the chosen people before God. Our early Christian ancestors saw themselves as heirs to those assemblies and adopted the word church to refer to where and when they gathered to worship the Lord. Gathering with the Word Announcing good news! You can now access the St. Thomas website at to participate in Advent reflections prepared by Fr. Pat Brennan. Download the material to gather and discuss the questions with family, friends, or small Christian communities, OR leave a comment to be shared with everyone in the virtual community. Either way, use this opportunity to enrich your Advent experience and connect more deeply with the Word of God. Dec 4, 2011 Page 6

The gift of education to the children of Duchity is a gift that will last a lifetime. There are over 40 students in the upcoming graduating class, up from 26 last year. Education is making a difference in the community. On his recent visit to St. Thomas, Father Fritz, the first Pastor in Duchity, noted that three graduates of Duchity schools are now studying to be doctors. Nixon recently scored number one in the whole country on the entrance exam for a Haitian medical university. St. Thomas is at 40% of the goal for this school year. Your help is needed to continue supporting schools in Duchity. Parents there are beginning to help more. An Education Team from St. Thomas will travel to Duchity early this coming year to meet with parents from the schools. 11 Nagi Oyuspa Helping the Spirit of Those That Are Suffering St. Thomas Team Visits the Lakota People This weekend a small team of three from St. Thomas (Chuck Newman, Carol Redell, and Anne Schultz) are visiting the Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Their objective is to begin to build a relationship through St. Agnes Parish in Manderson, South Dakota. Whatever you give from the heart is greatly appreciated. Our St. Thomas Saint Vincent de Paul Ministry carries on the vision of Frederick Ozanam, as, two by two, they visit those in need in their homes. Are you being called to donate your time and talent? See below. The Origins of the St. Vincent De Paul Society I know that the Catholic Church has done much great things in the past, but what do you do now? This question was posed to a group of Paris colleges students in One of the students, Frederick Ozanam, took this as a personal challenge. Frederick called a meeting with five of his friends and they decided to found the Conference of Charity and engage in practical actions of charity for those in need. The poor, the sick, the frail, and the unemployed, regardless of religion or race, would be helped. The members were to go to the dwelling of the needy to meet with them and assist by every means in their power. Furthermore, the service of the needy would not only consist of alms, but provide moral support and be a source of comfort for those in distress. The Conference of Charity chose St. Vincent De Paul as their patron because he had dedicated himself to the poor. The conference membership grew to more than 100 in As the membership continued to grow, Frederick encouraged the conference to divide into more units in order to better serve the needy. By 1835, the society had established an official rule, or set of regulations, and taken a new name The Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Who would think that a simple question would result in an organization of over 875,000 members in 130 countries of five continents? The St. Thomas the Apostle parishioners who volunteer as Vincentians continue the tradition of meeting the unemployed, the underemployed, the infirmed, and those who have experienced a financial burden such as a medical expense. In their home, in a prayerful and consoling manner, volunteers develop an appreciation of their situation and discuss their needs for assistance. After due diligence and if warranted, available resources are used to provide the requested assistance. The St. Thomas St. Vincent de Paul Society is funded by the weekly offerings to St. Thomas the Apostle Church, reimbursements from the St Vincent DePaul stores, donations made to the Poor Box outside of the chapel, and contributions made by the St Vincent DePaul Benefactors. If you would like to be a part of this 178 year old tradition, contact the Office of Outreach and Social Justice (Anne Schultz x113, aschultz@stapostle.org) Page 11 Dec 4, 2011

13 Stewardship Commission Remembering Your Parish The most practical way to make a significant gift to your parish is through your estate plan. This can take the form of designating St. Thomas the Apostle in your will, living trust or as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy or retirement account. Such gifts are wholly revocable while you are alive and may save significant estate taxes at your death. If you are considering remembering St. Thomas in your estate plans, please call Janet Simmons at ext 106. Last Weekend s stewardship of financial gifts... So that students could learn more about India with a first-hand perspective, school parents who are of Indian descent came to school to talk to the students about their native country. They also shared desserts from their homeland with the class. They watched a video on the TajMahal, and became familiar with Rudyard Kipling s works about British Imperialism in India. In order to learn about the caste system in the Indian culture, students participated in an exercise that made the caste system easier to understand. As they entered the classroom, most of the students received a bracelet. Those without a bracelet were asked to go to the back of the room and to watch in silence as the activity took place; these students were designated to be the Untouchables. The other students received bracelets that were blue, yellow, orange or green. The colors represented which group these students were to role play - Brahmans, Kshatriya, Vaishyas or Shudras. The students then worked on a craft project. Their activity was dependent on the caste to which they represented. For instance, if they had the blue bracelet and were representing the Brahmans, or the leaders, they could ask one of the Kshatriyas to do all of the work for them. Each group could ask someone from a lesser group to do their work for the project. Those who were the Untouchables had to simply watch. In the end, the students shared in a lively discussion about what they felt and experienced during the exercise, and what it must have been like to have lived in India in a caste system. This was a creative way to make this lesson come alive. Did You Know? Former second grade All Saints teacher Mrs. Ann Marie Smith, who is now enjoying motherhood with her beautiful baby daughter and family, had entered some of her students work in a poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications. One of her students, Ayush Panda, had his winning poem selected for publication in the anthology, A Celebration of Poets. His poem was selected out of several thousand entries as one of the ten best poems in the contest for the United States and Canada. Mrs. Smith certainly helped her students to sharpen their creative writing skills through this assignment, and now All Saints can claim our very own published author and poet. Page 13 Dec 4, 2011
