3 From the Pastor s Desk We know frustratingly little about what Paul means when he talks in today s second reading about his thorn in the flesh. Biblical scholars have tried to follow a trail of clues but the trail always goes cold. Paul s thorn was a chronic situation but the ailment itself is unknown. Guesses have included epilepsy, migraine headaches, malaria, depression, partial blindness, even a speech impediment. Whatever this thorn was, Paul couldn t get rid of it and he suffered greatly from it. This is really fascinating that a holy man who had visions of the heights of heaven, whom God chose to be among the greatest missionaries of all time, a spiritual giant whose letters we read in church to this day had an affliction that left him weak and suffering. Three times Paul begs the Lord to be relieved of this unknown affliction. Three times the help he hopes for never arrives. In fact, heaven gives Paul a resounding No! The thorn remains. Eventually Paul comes to trust that God is at work in his weakness even though it will not go away. Strength in weakness is opposite of the way we see the world. We re mostly sure that vulnerability is a sign of inadequacy, that weakness is a shortcoming that must be overcome by all means necessary. We prefer stories of bravery filled with heroes who defeat the enemy. Finding ourselves weak and at a loss that s too much like day-to-day life to be much of an inspiration revealing the glory of God. However, St. Paul stands in front of us today with his hands held out offering us a truth we can barely grasp. Paul shows us God s power in his own weakness so that we can look for God in times of our own weakness. Paul wants us to see that the God of Jesus Christ has a deep desire to be present in us and for us. Especially when we are caught in what might seem like the most Godforsaken time we could ever face. Paul offers the message he himself heard from God, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. But who would have ever thought that? Except for the mind of God! 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 8, 2012 I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ dwell with me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 Welcome Guests and Visitors! We re so glad you re here and invite you to walk the path of faith with us. St. Thomas strives to provide a spiritual home where all are welcome, where the healing, reconciling, liberating love of God is shared by all. We believe the church is the sacrament of God s saving presence in the world, join us! Would you like to become a Parishioner? Join us on Sunday, July 22 in the Gathering Area any time between 9am and 11:15am.

4 Worship Commission Liturgy & Music Questions to Ponder: In what ways do you have a hardness of heart? Like the psalmist, when do you find yourself raising your eyes to heaven? Many times music helps us to break open the Word more fully. Here is a suggestion of a song based on the psalm for this week. Your Grace is Enough by Matt Maher Presider s Schedule July 14/15 Saturday 4:30 pm, Fr. Dof Arty - Baptism Mass Sunday 8:00 am, Fr. Don McLaughlin 9:30 am, Fr. Bob Colaresi - 11:15 am, Fr. Don McLaughlin Schedule is subject to change. A Window Refresher So many people ask about the beautiful artwork in the church, especially the stained glass. Each week we will highlight two of the windows and explain more about them. Enjoy! The Rose Window (above the Narthex) The Rose Window is a symbol of Christ rising in the east. Thus, the window faces the north-east and will catch the light of the morning start (the sun) which is an ancient term for Christ. Each time we look at this window we are reminded that God should be the light of our lives. The side stained glass windows were designed by Helen Hickman and crafted by Conrad Schmitt Studios of New Berlin, WI. The upper portion of each window depicts a moment in Christ s life of a scriptural passage. The lower portion of each window represents an application of the scriptural moment to our past or present day life in Naperville. The windows powerfully call us to serve and love one another as Jesus served and loved us. Window #1 is entitled We Are Called (located behind the Baptismal Font) Baptism is the call to make present in our lives the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. Living waters are the gift of the Holy Spirit to empower us to walk with Christ. Like flowers, we bloom and flourish through the waters of Baptism and the continuous outpouring of God s Spirit upon us. Today s Readings First Reading They shall know that a prophet has been among them (Ezekiel 2:2-5). Psalm Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy (Psalm 123). Second Reading I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel The people said: Where did this man get all this? Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary? (Mark 6:1-6). 6 Faith and Formation Commission Adult C.A.R.E. CORNER From the prophet Ezekiel Did you know? The Jerusalem community was in exile in Babylon. Even in exile, God wanted to be with his people so he chose Ezekiel, a prophet, to speak for Him. Are we aware of God s presence during our times of exile? Mark Your Calendar for our Parish Picnic August 26 Noon 3:00 Can you help? Please contact Patti Dougherty pdougherty@stapostle.org or ext Coming Soon! High School religious education registration packets will be available in July. Details of the high school program are being finalized and will be explained in the registration packet. One of the easiest things we can do to mature in our faith is to ramp up our prayer life. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) reminds us that prayer is a vital necessity. (#2744). Two thousand years of Catholicism seems to have corroborated that, as it has provided us with an extremely rich and varied treasure chest of prayer words, forms, styles, gestures and postures. We can pray the words Jesus gave us in The Lord s Prayer. The Mass our worship service allows us to pray with other members of our parish family and the universal Church. We can pray over the food we share at family meals. We can use Scripture, especially the Psalms, as the basis for prayer. Or we can meditate alone in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer need not be confined to our knees, alone at our bedside, even though humility is the foundation of prayer (CCC # 2559). We can pray anywhere and anytime: out loud or in silence; in our cars while waiting for lights to change; while doing chores in our homes; at the stores where we run our errands; during the commercials of our favorite TV shows. We can pray for others or for our own needs. And don t forget that gratitude and praise counts as prayer. Perhaps one of the best ways to pray is simply to carry on an ongoing conversation with the Lord throughout the course of our day. After all, He invites us to accompany Him each day. The First Five Centuries of the Catholic Church Thursdays July 26, August 2 and 9 9:30-11:30am Senior Center Presenter: Chari Rosales, Director of Adult Faith Formation After the apostles, how did the infant Church grow, struggle and survive? What happened at the early Councils? Why and how did Creeds come to be? Who were the major players and why were they important? Come to explore these questions (and bring your own!) as we take a whirlwind tour through the fascinating and often turbulent early history of the Catholic Church. July 8, 2012, Page 6

7 Faith and Formation Commission Youth Stonebridge Food Drive Help Needed Teens and families, are you looking for a summer service project or some extra service hours? The Stonebridge area food drive needs your help. This food drive will take place on Saturday, July 28. This is the 10th annual drive of this kind and the food collected goes directly to the St. Thomas Care Pantry. Your help is needed in the following ways: Help deliver notices attached to grocery sacks in the Stonebridge/Stonegate neighborhoods. Teens would work with an adult driver. The time would be part of one day, flexible hours, some day between July 16 - July 24. On Saturday, July 28, act as a "runner" working with an adult driver to pick up the bags of food in the Stonebridge/Stonegate areas. Help with sorting food in the gym at St. Thomas on Saturday, July 28 from 10am to about 12 or 1 pm. Please consider helping the St. Thomas Care Pantry in this way. To volunteer or if you have questions, contact Carolyn Lowrie, Care Pantry Food Drive Coordinator at cdlowrie@gmail.com. Youth Ministry Corner Marva Dawn, in her book, The Sense of Call, shares, Genuine work, especially as we nurture others in the faith, will be small, humble, and humbling. We won t be able to, or need to, tally our accomplishments or be able to quantify what we ve really done. The real work of loving can t be calculated or enumerated; it is not public, not even usually noticed much. Loving does not reap rewards of wealth or fame... But the work of spreading the gospel happens with continued, often hidden engagement over the long haul. We can t nurture faith or live it in the world in one dramatic quick fix of heroism; it is more like a long pregnancy (sometimes years long!) till Christ is birthed in others (see Gal. 4:19-20) The kingdom calls for people who are willing to go down and down into the daunting, humbling, almost hopeless local presence of the problem to face the great problem one small life at a time. ( Thanks to all of you who nurture faith in others facing the great problem one small life at a time. You inspire me! You are a gift! Blessings, Peggy Families: Take some time to discuss and reflect on the readings. Question? of the Week... When has your faith challenged others? Upcoming Mission Trips There are two mission trip opportunities for St. Thomas high school students in July. St. Thomas teens are going to Washington DC July 14 through 22 and to Nicaragua July 25 through August 2. The Nicaragua trip is in need of an additional female chaperone and both trips still have openings for more teens. Is God calling you? The members of our parish Just5Days team will leave for their service week in Appleton, Wisconsin on Monday. They have prepared for this service event through formation sessions and prayer. Please pray for them during the week, that their experience will be marked by joy and hope, that their service to those in need will be fruitful, and that they will grow in knowledge and faith through the experience. The team s youth members include Mario Carillo, Peter DeLaCruz, Chloe Kotrba, Kyle Rodrigues, Callie Vitro, and Christian Weyneth. The adults accompanying them are Gloria DeLaCruz and Peggy Goralski. Medical Team Report Two Medical teams of about 11 members each visited our Twinning Parish, Ste. Marie-Madeleine in Duchity, Haiti in April. The two medical teams saw approximately 5,000 patients. An additional 600 students received general health checks and were de-wormed at Jean-Claude s school. The teams worked with Dr. Willie (from Jeremie), Dr. Vanette (the Doctor at our clinic in Duchity), the Haitian interpreters and local workers. Several mobile clinics were dispatched. The teams focused on cholera prevention/treatment and early detection/prevention of disease. The teams distributed Oral Rehydration Packets as a first line of defense against cholera and showed the healthcare community how to make up their own packets and administer the fluids. Dr. Vanette is interested in pursuing a career as an OB-GYN and had the opportunity to work with the team doctors on several deliveries. A bus accident brought seven patients into the clinic during the first Team s visit but none of the injuries were too severe and several patients were referred on to larger cities for additional treatment. Dr. Carla (Medical Team) and the public nurse, Natacha, worked together to educate the mid-wives on safer delivery practices. Team 1 treated three cases of club foot with progressive casting. Club foot is usually left untreated in Haiti. Dr. Dennis on team one showed Dr. s Willie and Vanette how the simple use of progressive casting can reform the malformed limb and prevent permanent disability. Several broken bones were also set. The overall perception of Dr. Vanette is that, while fairly inexperienced, she is doing a very good job and is very anxious to learn. Another valuable medical asset, Nurse Fontaine, a public health nurse, will be at the Clinic through the Fall. There is an interest in having specialty medical missions, including surgical teams, in the future. Therese will try to find a small sterilizer to be used for the surgical instruments. These will help us to transformthe lives of the less fortunate in our society and give a smile to the children! May the Lord bless you as you love Him in others. Scripture Safari The St. Thomas Vacation Bible School, Scripture Safari had a new theme this year, Fruit of the Spirit. It was a fabulous week full of energy, fun and enthusiasm, filled with Scripture, prayer, special speakers, puppet shows, songs, crafts and games. Scripture Safari was closed with mass on Saturday, June 30 at the 4:30 liturgy. Perhaps you saw the bright Kelly-green Scripture Safari tee shirts, designed by Carolyn Tjards, worn by the many children and helpers who were on Safari. Each day of the week had a theme and guest speaker: Mon: Grow Love - Fr. Don McLaughlin Tues: Sprout Joy - Lori Culberson Wed: Plant Peace - Anne Schultz Thurs: Produce Patience - Dn. Larry Kearney Fri: Pick Kindness - Fr. Dof Arty Parishioners attending weekend masses noted the garden/harvest theme. As a service project, participants donated cans of food to the St. Thomas Care Pantry. They toured the Care Pantry on the first day, thanks to Michelle Hunt. On Tuesday, they toured St. Thomas grounds and the vegetable garden, thanks to Theresa Uffner, Lorna Perry and Liz Michalski. Three hundred cans of food were collected for the St. Thomas Care Pantry an awesome amount! Thank you to everyone who donated! So many faithful adults and youth helpers contributed in some way to make this week the greatest adventure ever for 140 participants. Thank you to each and every one of them. A special thank you to this year s Safari Leader, Karen Lankisch, whose time and dedication made this week happen as we learned more about the Fruit of the Spirit. Scripture Safari is tentatively scheduled for June 10-14, Registration will be next April. Mark your calendars now for another great week of Scripture Safari!
