3 Dear Friends, I will pour a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. The Feast of Pentecost means so much to me in so many ways; it is what and who I believe I am about, what you and I are about, and what I believe the church and life is all about, being alive in the Spirit. It is thru the breath of the Spirit that we exist, that we connect to each other, and carry on the mission and ministry of God in Jesus to the world. It is the Spirit that gives life. If we are not invested or connected into that level of life then we only serve that which is material and illusory, that which corrodes and dies, that which is limited. In the Spirit we have a connection to all creation, and especially to one another, that transcends the limits of time and space, of the material world, and, in fact, it is the Spirit in which the material world subsists, has meaning and life. Jesus opens a window for us today to that dimension of reality, to life in the Spirit. As we are open to each other in faith and love, then we are open to God. As we abide in God s Word, which is to love one another, then God abides in us and we in God, making a dwelling place with us in the Spirit. Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our dwelling with them. If we love one another, the Spirit of God dwells in us and with us, the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth will always be with us and lead us to all truth. What hope, what confidence we can have in the Holy Spirit! Through Jesus, in the Spirit, we are drawn up into the very Trinitarian life of God. The window for that experience is right here in front of you, next to you, with you. We are that window to each other. Only in love can we know God. It is in that Spirit that we carry on the mission and ministry of Jesus to the world. On the day of Pentecost, people thought they were drunk on new wine. St. Peter tells them, No, these people are not drunk as you suppose, it is only nine o clock in the morning. It is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: It will come to pass in those days that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.... It is truly a Feast Day I am proud and happy to celebrate with you, the People upon whom the Spirit has been poured. Happy Pentecost, Happy Feast Day to all! Pentecost Sunday May 27, 2007 In one Spirit we were all baptized into one body. 1 Corinthians 12:13a Love,

There will be no 6:30 a.m. mass on this day. Farewell for Jim Melton Jim Melton will speak at all masses next weekend, June 2 and 3. We will have a blessing for him and have the opportunity to thank him for his seven years as our High School Youth Minister. We wish him and his family well as they continue to serve the Lord with gladness! Pentecost Sunday COME, HOLY SPIRIT, COME Many times in the Hebrew scriptures we see God coming to earth as a mighty wind. So when we hear of the mighty wind filling the house in Acts today, we know without being told that God is there, acting among the disciples. God fills them, and us, with the Holy Spirit. The disciples are able to preach the Good News to all the peoples of the earth, gathered there symbolically in Jerusalem. God wants the word to spread beyond the Mediterranean, eventually all the way to the Arctic Sea! And the word is unity. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we are all one in Christ. There are different gifts given to each member of the body, but each gift is a manifestation of the Spirit. Each person, each culture of people has different gifts. That s what makes the body of Christ strong. Let us take care never to suppress another s gifts, even though we might not understand them. To suppress a gift would give injury to the body of Christ. UNITED IN LOVE All throughout this Easter season, we have heard about the radical love Jesus calls us to share in this world. God gives us the Spirit so that we humans have the strength to love as Jesus loved. This love that doesn t discriminate, that celebrates the diverse gifts of God s creation, this is the love that we have the power to share. To love as Christ loves, to act as Jesus did, is something you and I can do because we are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. We can be people of peace, we can feed the hungry, clothe the naked. We can choose not to go to war. We can choose to lift up the gifts of those different from us. We are Christians we are people of love. Copyright 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Lectors, Host Greeters, Eucharistic Ministers your summer schedules are available on line. 5 Pray For Our Parish Pentecost Sunday O God of the covenant, you revealed yourself on the holy mountain in fire and on Pentecost in the flame of the Holy Spirit. Let your mighty fire burn away our pride, consume our hatreds, annihilate the armaments of death and kindle instead, within the whole human family, the welcomed fire of your love. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who sends us the Spirit of truth, and who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. 6 Faith and Spiritual Formation Commission Seeking Faith? What are you looking for? If the answer is I don t know or I m not sure, then RCIA Inquiry may be for you or someone you know. A new Inquiry group is forming now which will meet from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on the Mondays of May 21, June 4 and June11 in Meeting Room 2. This is a welcoming place for unbaptized persons or Christians of other denominations considering entering the Roman Catholic Church to ask questions and explore the faith before making a formal commitment to it. For more information, or to register, contact Chari Rosales in the Adult Faith Formation Office at x138 or crosales@stapostle.org. C.A.R.E. CORNER Today is Pentecost Sunday, the anniversary of the beginning of our church. Yet, so few of us bother to observe this anniversary. It is estimated that only about one-third of all Catholics actually attend Mass on any given weekend. Apparently, many of us don t feel it is desirable or necessary to gather in worship. There are all sorts of theories as to why people stay away. Some find Mass too impersonal, too ritualistic, too old-fashioned, or just too boring. But our Mass follows the format that Jesus followed at the Last Supper. As Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, they gathered in fellowship, shared stories (Scripture), sang hymns and ate the prescribed meal. To this, Jesus added the institution of the Eucharist the offering of His own body and blood in the forms of bread and wine. When we come to God in worship, it is not to see what we can receive. Yes, we want and need to be spiritually fed. But Mass is not for the purpose of being entertained. The purpose of Mass is for us to show our adoration and devotion, to give our worship, to God. Ordination Celebrated Congratulations to Cyndi Gavin for answering the call to serve the ordained ministry. Her ordination will be Sunday, June 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on Benton Avenue in Naperville. A reception will immediately follow the Service of Word and Sacrament. All are welcome to attend. Cyndi will be serving St John United Church of Christ in Aurora as Pastor. May 27, 2007 Page 6
