1 (843) N KINGS HWY, SUITE 102, MYRTLE BEACH, SC Dear Friends in Christ, March 3, 2019 A few months ago, some of our parishioners here at St. Andrew s were targeted by a scam. Several parishioners received text messages from a person pretending to be their pastor, Fr. Morgan, who solicited money in the form of itunes gift cards for sick children. This was a scam. I did not send this message, and never would solicit any gift or donation through a text message or , or any means outside of our regular collections or other public means. Now, it seems these same con artists have moved on to other parishes. Back in January, a number of parishioners at Transfiguration Church in Blythewood received text messages pretending to be from their pastor, Msgr. James LeBlanc. In the same fashion as our scammer, the person pretending to be Msgr. LeBlanc said he wanted to give itunes gift cards to the sick. Recipients of the text messages were asked to purchase three $100 itunes gift cards, and send a photo of the card s pin number in a return text message. Similar incidents have taken place at Immaculate Conception in Goose Creek and St. Michael s in Garden City. It s uncertain precisely how the parishioners phone numbers have been gathered, but it seems that most of the information used by the scammers was gathered from websites and church bulletins. The con artists perpetrating this scam are depending upon two things: the generous Christian impulses of our people who desire to minister to the sick and the trust they have in their pastors. And of course, they know that it is not unheard of for a pastor to ask his parishioners for contributions to various causes. However, no pastor or priest should ever privately solicit money or gifts from his parishioners. All requests for monetary support or gifts should always take place in a public way, such as the collections we take at Mass. So, if you receive a text message or or phone call purporting to be from me or any other representative of St. Andrew s or the Diocese of Charleston which solicits money or gifts, be aware this is a scam. Do not respond to the or text. Please report any such solicitation to our church office and to the police. Abortion as a "Fundamental Right" Threatens Religious Freedom Declaring abortion a "fundamental right" under the recent, extreme New York State late-term abortion law may cause the beliefs and values of pro-life supporters to be questioned and the "consequences for the pro-life movement could be dire," said Bishop Scharfenberger of Albany, NY. He asked, "Will being pro-life one day be a hate crime in NY?" He further wondered if the state would permit pro -life doctors and nurses to be licensed under such a law. He questioned if health facilities which do not offer abortions would be certified and allowed to continue and if the law "will allow that even $1 be given to maternity services without offering women the 'choice' of abortion?" "These are unanswered questions but I shudder to think of the consequences this law will wreak." Still No Protections for Aborted Babies Born Alive: After Sen. Patty Murray (WA) blocked the "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act" from passing in a fast -track unanimous consent vote, Sen. Ben Sasse (NE), sponsor of the bill, promised to "continue pushing for the protection of the infant survivors of abortion" and hopes that "ours is a country that values and loves and protects every single member of our community - no matter how small." The bill would have ensured that babies who survive abortion receive medical care. Sen. Sasse introduced the bill in response to the proposed VA abortion bill that would have allowed, according to VA Gov. Northam, "The infant would be delivered... be resuscitated, if that's what the mother and family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and mother." (Discussion about what? Denying the baby medical care? Infanticide?) A 2013 study found over 1,200 babies a year survive abortions. Most are left alone to die. 6 Jaden S., 8 th grader here at St Andrew, participated in the state Knights of Columbus free throw contest the weekend of February 16. We are proud to announce that Jaden is the winner of the division for 13-yearolds! He made 13/15 in the regional, 23/25 at district and 20/25 in the state competition. He had a great time and we are thankful to the Knights of Columbus for hosting this fun tournament! Jaden was happy to let everyone know he is a St Andrew Crusader! 7 IGLESIA CATÓLICA DE SAN ANDRÉS 3 de Marzo de 2019 Queridos amigos en Cristo, Hace unos meses, algunos de nuestros feligreses aquí en St. Andrew's fueron blanco de una estafa. Varios feligreses recibieron mensajes de texto de una persona que pretendía ser su pastor, el Padre. Morgan, quien solicitó dinero en forma de tarjetas de regalo de itunes para niños enfermos. Esto fue una estafa. No responda este mensaje, yo nunca solicitaría ningún regalo o donación a través de un mensaje de texto o correo electrónico, ni ningún medio fuera de nuestras colectas regulares u otros medios públicos. Ahora, parece que estos mismos estafadores se han mudado a otras parroquias. En enero, varios feligreses de la Iglesia de Transfiguración en Blythewood recibieron mensajes de texto que simulaban ser de su pastor, Msgr. James LeBlanc. De la misma manera que nuestro estafador, la persona que pretende ser Msgr. LeBlanc dijo que quería darle tarjetas de regalo de itunes a los enfermos. Se les pidió a los destinatarios de los mensajes de texto que compraran tres tarjetas de regalo de itunes de $ 100 y que enviaran una foto del número PIN de la tarjeta en un mensaje de texto de retorno. Lucas 6:44 LOS ESPECTÁCULOS INTERIORES En este tercer Domingo de lecturas del Sermón del Llano, Jesús habla del alma interior y sus expresiones exteriores. Usa imágenes para enseñar. Nos habla a todos nosotros. Jesús ve un cable que conecta el alma con las expresiones del alma, palabras y hechos. Usa un poco de exageración para recalcar el punto. Nos urge a limpiar toda la basura que nos hace ciegos. Sabe que tenemos una tremenda habilidad para cegarnos ante nuestras propias debilidades, aunque sean tan grandes como una viga. Sabe, también, lo dispuestos que estamos a sacar a relucir los fallos de los demás por minúsculos que sean. Y también esto es para el consumo general nuestro; lo bueno sólido y lo malo sólido eventualmente saldrá a relucir.
