1 St Andrew Catholic Church Myrtle Beach, South Carolina October 22, 2017 Dear friends in Christ, Last week, we discussed Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the first document given to the Church by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council. This document called for a renewal and revitalization of the liturgy, in order to help the people of God fully, actively, and consciously participate in the mysteries we celebrate. This call for a renewal of the liturgy resulted in the New Order of Mass, which was promulgated under Paul VI in 1969, which was intended to help foster the desired renewal. However, changes to the order of Mass can only be a beginning to a liturgical renewal. True renewal comes from how we receive and live out the changes. What puts flesh on the bones of texts and rubrics are the ars celebrandi et adorandi, the art of celebrating the liturgy properly and adoring the Lord devoutly. This theme was expanded upon by the Council Fathers in their Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, where they taught: "The liturgy must favor and make shine brightly the sense of the sacred. It must be imbued with reverence, adoration and glorification of God." So, how do we celebrate the liturgy, especially the Holy Mass, in a way that is imbued with reverence and adoration? How do we make our sense of the sacred shine brightly? First, we must all recognize that when we are here at Mass, we are all engaged in an art form: the ars celebrandi, the art of celebrating. The celebration of the Eucharist is not a spectacle at which the people are merely present; they too must be engaged in the art of celebrating. And, like any other art, the art of celebrating requires attention and focus. We must all be fully aware of our actions and speech in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, lest we make a poor showing with our art. Distractions must be kept to a minimum; phones should be turned off, conversation should cease and silence should take hold in every heart. We must practice the discipline of self-recollection and movement toward the Lord, and to do this we must pray. The moments before Mass begins should be spent in silent prayer, not idleness or chatter. During the Mass, we should know and make our ritual gestures and responses, singing when we are called to sing, speaking when we are called to speak, with clarity and conviction. And by no means should we ever leave Mass before the final blessing and dismissal; rather, we should linger after the Mass has ended, to offer prayers of thanksgiving and then to spend time in fellowship with our brothers and sisters. Dear friends, we who gather in the name of the Lord to fulfil his command, Do this in memory of me, are not merely a crowd; we are a congregation. But in order to be a congregation, we must all be gathered with a single purpose: to give proper adoration and glory to God through the practice of the art of celebrating. May the Lord who gives his Body and Blood to us as food and drink help us all to become masters of this art on earth, so that we might sing his praises forever in the glory of heaven! Fr. Morgan

2 ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH JULY 2, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH OCTOBER 22, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ENTRANCE ANTIPHON E CO E OR ER O OR HIP The parishioners of St Andrew Catholic Church are happy to extend a warm welcome to the many visitors who join us for worship today. Guidelines for the Reception of Holy Communion As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Mass when we receive Holy Communion, the true Body and Blood of the Lord. Yet, we Catholics should receive Holy Communion only when we are living in communion with the Catholic Church and in the state of sanctifying grace and have made the appropriate fast from food and drink. Because of the connection we draw between being in full communion with the Catholic Church and receiving Holy Communion, we cannot invite those who are not Catholic to share in Holy Communion with us. Still, we welcome all to this celebration of the Mass as our brothers and sisters, and pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit will one day draw us closer that all may be one. (John 17:22) Prayer During Hurricane Season O Heavenly Father, all the elements of nature obeys Your commands, including hurricanes. Court Rules Against Football Coach Silent Prayer In August, a 3-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, struck down the appeal of Washington State H.S. football coach, Joe Kennedy, who was fired for taking-a-knee on the 50-yard line after a game, bowing his head to silently thank God for a good game, and 30 seconds later - leave. "Banning all coaches from praying individually in public, just because they can be seen, is wrong," said First Liberty President Shackelford. "This is not the America contemplated by the Constitution. "A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues." Marcus Cicero, circa 100 BC St Andrew Women s Club held their first meeting on Mon, Oct 9th. Guest speakers were Capt John Harrelson and Lt Brandon Strickland from the Horry County Police Dept. The presentation was about Women s Safety. It was very informative and they did a fantastic job in answering the many questions and concerns that were posed to them by our attendees. 4

There were also so many other variables to consider, one of which was the expense involved...we felt we had no control, but God reminded us again that He is always in control and that we could trust in Him. Andrew is two years old now, and we can t image loving a child whom we conceived more than we love Andrew. It is amazing how he fits our personalities so well. More and more every day we are so thankful to his birthmother for her selfless decision. A woman who becomes pregnant unexpectedly may feel as though her world is ending. To women with an unplanned pregnancy, Maya says, This is survivable. Have hope. SCRIPTURE Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he as a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. ~ Matthew 1:18-21, 24 OR A OPTIVE OTHER OR CHI REN A AITING A OPTION SCRIPTURE Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, you son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. ~ John 19:25-27 SCRIPTURE Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said, Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. ~ Matthew 19:

But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you I will not leave you orphans: I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. ~John OR A OPTE CHI REN OR ARRIE COUP E INTERCE ION For expectant mothers placing their children for adoption: May they receive loving support As they walk this journey...we pray to the Lord. For married couples considering adoption: May the Holy Spirit guide their discernment, Grant them peace, and make possible His holy will...we pray to the Lord. RE ATE ORK O ERCY Shelter the homeless Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Comfort the sorrowful Instruct the ignorant Counsel the doubtful Pray for the living and the dead SCRIPTURE For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, Abba, Father! The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. ~ Romans 8:14-17 I YOU KNO? The term used more widely now (than given up for adoption ) is placed for adoption, which helps highlight the selfless generosity of birthparents in choosing an adoptive family for their child. Maya...emphasizes the need for continued support of the birth-mother and her family after the placement. Some birth-parents grieve after the placement. It doesn t mean the decision was wrong, but simply that the experience was life-changing. Some adoption agencies offer support services after the placement, and there are also support resources that are searchable online. 10
