1 St Andrew Catholic Church Mass Schedule Monday - Friday: 9am Saturday: 4:30, 6:15pm Sunday: 7:30, 9:15, 11am, 5 & 7pm (Spanish) Confessions Tues & Thurs: 8-8:45am; Wed: 4:30-5:15pm; Sat: 3-4pm Office Hours Monday - Thursday: 9am - 4pm; Friday: 9am - 12noon Brothers and sisters in Christ, December 31, 2017 Each year on the first of January the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. While perhaps for us it seems a very settled matter that Mary is the Mother of God, early in the Church s history it was a contentious issue. From the early days of the Church, the faithful understood that Mary was the Mother of God, expressing this truth of the faith by the Greek term theotokos, meaning God-bearer or Mother of God. However, the term theotokos was disputed by theologians, and not formally affirmed by the magisterium of the Church until the Council of Ephesus in 431. At issue was not the nature of Mary, but the nature of her Son. Orthodox Catholic belief is that Jesus Christ has two natures, Human and Divine, united in one Person. It is by this unity in Jesus of the human and divine that fallen man is reunited with God, and thereby delivered from sin and death. In the Incarnation, God becomes a man, Jesus Christ, and assumes created human nature to himself. The created human nature, which had been wounded by sin, is now a part of God, whose divine life and love and grace and forgiveness are infinite, infinitely more than sufficient to heal the wound of sin. But, in order for human nature to be fully healed, it must be fully assumed. In order for humanity to be fully redeemed by Jesus Christ, Jesus needs to be fully human and fully divine. And so, we believe that Mary, who by her fiat and the power of the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus, bore Him in her womb and into the world, is the Mother of a man who is both fully human and fully divine. Therefore, it is proper to call her Mother of God. But this raises the question, how can a finite woman give birth to the infinite God? How can the creature become the mother of the Creator? Many theologians asked these questions in the early days of the Church and disputed that Mary could be the Mother of God. Best known of these is the Bishop Nestorius, who used the term Christotokos, the Christ bearer, to affirm that Mary was indeed the mother of Jesus, who is the Christ; but he rejected the term Theotokos, and denied that Mary could be the mother of the Divine. This heretical view is known as Nestorianism. This question was debated at the Council of Ephesus, and the understanding of Mary as Theotokos was affirmed. Nestorius lost his position as the Bishop of Constantinople, and Nestorianism was condemned as heretical. Dear friends, our understanding of who Mary is depends entirely upon our understanding of who her Son is. When we call Mary Mother of God, we speak not only of her dignity and holiness; we speak also of the fullness of Divinity that dwells within her Son, by whose Incarnation we have been reunited with the Divine. May we who love the Virgin Mother always by that very love grow in our love of her Divine Son. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Fr. Morgan

4 JULY 2, THE 2017 HOLY FAMILY 13TH SUNDAY OF JESUS, IN MARY ORDINARY AND JOSEPH TIME PARISH NEWS Taking "Christ" Out of "Christmas" on College Campuses Under the guise of inclusivity, many colleges across the nation are promoting non-religious decorations, displays and celebrations when issuing their annual guidelines for Christmas. They contend that public religious displays are inappropriate for Christmas - a holiday so-named because it celebrates the birth of Christ. In their efforts "striving to make campuses as inclusive as possible in 2017, by banning Christmas displays and celebrations, these colleges are telling Christians their traditions are offensive. * The University of California, Irvine, encouraged a "focus on celebrating a special occasion, instead of a specific holiday" such as a "year-end celebration" or celebrate "seasonal themes such as fall, winter, or spring." * The State University of New York at Brockport issued decorating guidelines. "Keep decorations general and non-specific to any religion. Create a winter theme with lights and color rather than religious icons..." Brockport advised employees to "consider a grab bag instead of a Secret Santa gift exchange. * Missouri State University barred "religious icons" and recommended displaying snowmen, bells, flowers, and other nondescript items. * Life University in Georgia, Eastern Connecticut State University, and others, are holding a holiday decorating contest that considers "inclusiveness, or how the decorations are respectful of all religious winter holidays." * Many colleges are leaving off the word "Christmas" to describe annual tree lighting ceremonies. (nynews.com, 12/10/17; leadershipinstitute.org, 12/6/17; campusreform.org, 12/11/17) "There were only a few shepherds at the first Bethlehem. The ox and the donkey understood more of the first Christmas than the high priests in Jerusalem. And it is the same today." Thomas Merton, Catholic monk and author The Diocese of Charleston has on staff Catholic certified spiritual directors throughout the Diocese. These individuals provide spiritual direction that encourages us to explore our relationship with God. Many of us find it a challenge to notice God s action in the midst of our busy lives, although we really yearn deep within our being for an awareness of God s presence with us. Explore a relationship with God What is happening in your life that separates you from living with deeper meaning? How is God present or absent in your life? How do you know God s direction for your life? Spiritual direction encourages us to explore our relationship with God. In spiritual direction, we are guided to reflect acutely on the experiences of our daily lives and God s presence within each experience. Spiritual direction is really not about being directed per se, but about being invited on a journey with a trained and certified companion to listen to God in a new way. What is the role of a spiritual director? A spiritual director/companion is one who is present to the directee through deep listening and personal support. This creates a safe environment where we can openly and prayerfully explore where God s spirit is leading. What happens in spiritual direction? Spiritual direction is really not about being directed. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God through conversation, listening and prayer. We talk about what s on your mind. How often do we meet? Is there a cost? Most common is a monthly appointment for one hour. The Office of Pastoral Formation of the Diocese of Charleston is providing this experience cost free.
