2 Page 1 Holy Cross Catholic Church March 3, 2019 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019 Every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thorn bushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. Luke 6:44 THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest specklike flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Signs of a battered child can include repeated bruising or bruising in unusual places, broken bones, scratches, and other injuries. Even if you do not see physical abuse happening, such injuries may be signs that a child is in danger in his or her own home. Upcoming activities and programs include the following: Rosary/Novena For Life There will be no Rosary/Novena For Life this Wednesday, March 6 th due to Ash Wednesday. The Friends of St. Raphael KofC Ministry will resume the Evening Rosary Novena For Life on Wednesday, March 13 th and will continue every Wednesday until May 1 st at 7:30 PM. The rosary will take place at the Holy Cross Chapel located on the corner of Magnolia and Everett Streets in downtown Moorpark. The event is open to ALL PARISHONERS for a meaningful evening of prayer and fellowship. We would like to invite everyone to participate in the Rosary. The Rosary is my favorite prayer. A marvelous prayer! Marvelous in its simplicity and its depth. In the prayer we repeat many times the words that the Virgin Mary heard from the Archangel, and from her kinswoman Elizabeth. St. Pope John Paul II The Fabulous Knights of Columbus Fish Frys will begin on Friday March 8th and be held every Friday evening through April 12 th, 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Dear Holy Cross Parish families, The Sisters of Notre Dame and La Reina High School & Middle School wish to thank you for your support for the 5th Annual Nun Run. Despite the heavy rain this year, your presence and/or encouragement contributed to the energizing community spirit for approximately 500 participants runners, walkers, volunteers and community service organization representatives. The Nun Run raises funds for our local and global ministries including education, nursing, the ministry of intercessory prayer, pastoral care for the sick, vocation discernment, individual and group spiritual development, eldercare, and pastoral care for the grieving and prisoners. In addition, the sisters provide advocacy and leadership on behalf of victims of human trafficking, immigrants and the homeless. En una de esas visitas mi abuelo y mis tíos estaban quemando la tierra en su rancho. Mientras el fuego ardía, papa Manuel nos explicaba que era necesario reducir todo en cenizas para que la tierra recobrara sus fuerzas y quedará más fértil. Sin saberlo, mi abuelo me dio la imagen que hasta hoy sostiene mi concepto del Miércoles de Cenizas y de la Cuaresma. El Miércoles de Cenizas es la fiesta cristiana que por lo menos doce siglos ha señalado el comienzo de la Cuaresma. No cabe duda que para los latinos este día es de particular atracción. Es uno de los pocos días del año litúrgico en cual llegamos al templo en masa con tal de recibir las cenizas en la frente. Nosotros somos un pueblo enraizado en la tierra y sabemos que la tierra necesita quemarse de vez en cuando para seguir produciendo. Octavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 3 de marzo de 2019 Cada árbol se conoce por sus frutos. No se recogen higos de las zarzas, ni se cortan uvas de los espinos. Lucas 6:44 LOS ESPECTÁCULOS INTERIORES En este tercer Domingo de lecturas del Sermón del Llano, Jesús habla del alma interior y sus expresiones exteriores. Usa imágenes para enseñar. Nos habla a todos nosotros. Jesús ve un cable que conecta el alma con las expresiones del alma, palabras y hechos. Usa un poco de exageración para recalcar el punto. Nos urge a limpiar toda la basura que nos hace ciegos. Sabe que tenemos una tremenda habilidad para cegarnos ante nuestras propias debilidades, aunque sean tan grandes como una viga. Sabe, también, lo dispuestos que estamos a sacar a relucir los fallos de los demás por minúsculos que sean. Y también esto es para el consumo general nuestro; lo bueno sólido y lo malo sólido eventualmente saldrá a relucir. Hay un dicho en latín que hace eco de las imágenes de Jesús, y es muy cierto: Lo que se engendra en el hueso se mostrará en la carne. Al fin y al cabo, lo interior saldrá afuera. Copyright J. S.
