1 St Andrew Catholic Church Mass Schedule Monday - Friday: 9am Saturday: 4:30, 6:15pm Sunday: 7:30, 9:15, 11am, 5 & 7pm (Spanish) Confessions Tues & Thurs: 8-8:45am; Wed: 4:30-5:15pm; Sat: 3-4pm Office Hours Monday - Thursday: 9am - 4pm; Friday: 9am - 12noon March 18, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday of Lent, traditionally known as Passion Sunday, and traditionally observed as the beginning of Passiontide, the final two weeks of Lent. Passiontide as a liturgical season is marked by a more intense focus on the preparation of our Lord to undergo his Passion in both the readings and texts of the Mass, and by the practice of veiling the crucifixes and statues in the church. While Passiontide as a distinct liturgical season was removed by the revision of the General Roman calendar of 1969, the church continues during these final days of Lent to focus more intently on the Passion of the Lord through the choice of hymns, the readings of Mass, the use of the Prefaces I and II of the Passion of the Lord, as well as, the practice of veiling the crucifixes and statues of the church. The crucifixes remain veiled until after Good Friday of the Lord s Passion, and the statues of the Blessed Mother and other saints remain veiled until the Easter Vigil. As the Church enters into Passiontide, our minds and hearts should become more focused on the sacrifice of the Lord, and the suffering he endured for us sinners. The Passion and Crucifixion of the Lord are profound scandals to the fallen world, which wants and seeks a god who is a mere source of earthly power, something akin to a genie who grants wishes, rather than the God of humility, self-sacrifice, and suffering. The Passion and Crucifixion reveal to us that the power of God is perfected in weakness, and that by taking up our cross and following the Lord (which means suffering for others and for righteousness) is how we grow in the image and likeness of God. But for any of this to make sense, for us to accept that God has suffered and died so that we might be reconciled to him, we must first admit to ourselves and to God that we are alienated from him, that we need reconciliation. Practically speaking, this means making a good confession of our sins. It is one of the Seven Precepts of the Church that every Catholic Christian must make a sacramental confession of sins to a priest at least once a year. Failure to do so excludes one from full sacramental communion with Christ and his Church. And so, in order to provide opportunity for our whole parish to make a good confession of sins, we will welcome more than ten priests this coming Monday, March 19 th, who will hear confessions beginning at 6pm. We will also hear confessions this week according to our normal schedule, with one priest hearing confessions from 8-8:45am both Tuesday and Thursday and from 4:30-5:15 pm Wednesday afternoon, and two priests from 3-4pm on Saturday. May the Lord who suffered and died on the cross have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Fr. Morgan

For more information, contact Matthew at (843) or tullm42@aol.com Horry County Division 1 Myrtle Beach, SC Religious Liberty Eroding in Canada - A Cautionary Tale for Americans: Canada's Catholic bishops say the government's new Canada Summer Jobs grant policy "conflicts directly with the right to freedom of religion and conscience which is enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms..." This new policy requires that employers sign a form supporting abortion and transgender "rights" in order to receive student summer job grants, thus restricting the voices of faith communities in Canada and limiting their participation in the public square. "It seriously undermines the right to religious freedom since the Government of Canada is directly limiting the right of religious traditions to hold, teach and practice their principles and values in public," the bishops wrote. Non-profit groups, small businesses, and private sector employers can apply for funding for wage subsidies for students ages However, some in government did not want pro-life groups receiving any Canada Summer Jobs grants, so this year they added the new requirement that pro-life individuals and businesses cannot, in good conscience, sign. Some unfortunate consequences of this new policy will be: summer camps will be forced to close; the services of numerous non-profit organizations will be reduced; apprenticeship opportunities will be lost. "These effects, to name but a few, will be felt in Catholic dioceses and organizations as well as in many other faith communities across Canada." (lifesitenews.com, 1/11/18; cccb.ca, 1/18/18; catholic register.org, 1/11/18) "Christians must beware of a polite persecution that is cloaked in a disguise of culture, modernity, and progress." 6 ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH JULY 2, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FAITH FORMATION GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE "Now there were some Greeks among those who had come to worship at the feast. They came to Philip?and asked him, 'Sir, we would like to see Jesus.'" It has begun. News of Jesus has spread beyond native-born, Aramaicspeaking Jews. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home. What we do know is that this interaction spurred an interesting comment from Jesus: "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." In other words, it has begun. The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: "he said this indicating the kind of death he would die." A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies to its life as only a seed. A caterpillar takes on the appearance of temporary death in order to transform into a butterfly. In the Gospels, sacrifice and death are a way of becoming something more than you were before. This Lent, new life can come from our sacrifices. When we enter into the season with Jesus, our difficulties can transform our perspective. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." As we abstain from meat and fast from eating between meals, we can grow in compassion for the hungry. We can give alms of our time, sacrificially spending time with the lonely, the sick, and the marginalized. Our little Lenten "deaths" -- death to unnecessary preferences, death to selfish living, death to ignorance of other's pain - - can bring new life to the world long after the season is over. This is the invitation this Sunday and every Lenten season, to begin anew from death to life. MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR ENTENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA (Gospel Meditation) "Quisiéramos ver a Jesús". (Juan 12:20). 6

7 Reconciliation Our Catholic church treasures the sacrament of reconciliation. Many parishes offer a communal celebration of penance, especially during Advent and Lent. But private reconciliation is usually available every week of the year. If you'd like to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, here's what to do: Prepare. Prayerfully recall your sins. Some will be specific actions. Some represent a more general pattern of behavior. Go to the priest. Visit when he's in the reconciliation room at your parish or ask for an appointment. You may either kneel anonymously behind a screen or sit in a chair where you may speak face to face. Be welcome. You and the priest may greet each other. Make the Sign of the Cross. He may urge you to have confidence in God. You may indicate the interval since your last confession or anything else that will help. Just use common sense. Either you or the priest may read from Scripture. Confess your sins. Some penitents begin with a formula like, "Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. But you don't have to. Let the priest know your sins. You may discuss the sins you confess so the priest can give you the best counsel. Receive a penance. The priest will recommend some action after you leave to indicate to God the sincerity in your heart. Usually he suggests prayer or self-denial. If it sounds difficult, let him know. Pray for forgiveness. The priest may invite you to say a prayer of sorrow aloud. If you remember the Act of Contrition, you may use it. But you may also speak simply from your heart. Receive absolution. This is the best part. The priest proclaims absolution, and God forgives your sins. Conclude. The priest may say, "Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. If so, answer, "His mercy endures forever." Or he may conclude informally. Change! Go forth, and with God's help, begin to live a new life of freedom from the slavery of sin! 8 ST ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH JULY 2, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FAITH FORMATION SCHOOL NEWS PRINCIPAL S CORNER Dear St. Andrew, Meet our two B.R.A.V.E. Students for the month of January, Ian and Olivia, in 1 st Grade. Their teacher, Mrs. Hancheck, reports that Ian is an excellent worker. He tries very hard to do his very best at every task, including being kind to his friends. Olivia received the award because she embodies altruism. She is very helpful to classmates in need, both in the classroom and on the playground. Thank you to both of these exemplar St. Andrew students. We ask for your prayers for Ian and Olivia, and all of our fine students here at St. Andrew. Thank you, Debbie Wilfong Recently, the 8 th graders at St. Andrew Catholic School in Myrtle Beach visited our Nation s capitol. The trip was a culmination of their years together at St. Andrew, a review of their Social Studies Curriculum, and a time of prayer and unity. They were honored to bring up the gifts at the National Basilica during their visit. During their stay, they were met head on with the weather challenges of a Nor easter. As luck would have it, because tours were cancelled, they had the opportunity to meet the US Women s Hockey Team Gold Medalists! Just more proof that God is good and always has a plan! 8

Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
