2 ENTRANCE ANTIPHON WELCOME The parishioners of St. Andrew Catholic Church are happy to extend a warm welcome to the many visitors who join us for worship today. St. Andrew Parish, a Roman Catholic community, seeks to nurture the faith and serve the needs of parishioners and visitors by proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through active stewardship, ministries of word and sacrament, programs of Christian formation, and works of charity and justice. GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Mass when we receive Holy Communion, the true Body and Blood of the Lord. Yet, we Catholics should receive Holy Communion only when we are living in communion with the Catholic Church and in the state of sanctifying grace and have made the appropriate fast from food and drink. Because of the connection we draw between being in full communion with the Catholic Church and receiving Holy Communion, we cannot invite those who are not Catholic to share in Holy Communion with us. Still, we welcome all to this celebration of the Mass as our brothers and sisters, and pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit will one day draw us closer that all may be 2 one. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS Bulletin Picture on the Cover: Although it seems strange that the Annunciation of the Lord falls at the midpoint of Lent this year, the reason for it is simple. On March 25, we celebrate the Angel Gabriel s message to Mary that God has chosen her to be the mother of our Savior, exactly nine months before we celebrate his birth at Christmas, making this feast also a celebration of Jesus conception. Laetare Sunday: Rejoice! It s Laetare Sunday! The Fourth Sunday of Lent. The Latin word laetare means rejoice. The Introit (entrance antiphon - see page 2) in the Latin Mass begins Laetare, Jerusalem ( Rejoice, Jerusalem ). Because the midpoint of Lent is the Thursday of the third week of Lent, Laetare Sunday has traditionally been viewed as a day of celebration, on which the austerity of Lent is briefly lessened. The purple vestments are set aside and rose ones are used instead. Movie Night has been cancelled for March 31 st due to other events that are scheduled for the same evening. We hope to see you instead at the Fish Fry 5-7 p.m. in CLC and Stations of the Cross in the church at 7 p.m. Your Columbarium, at St James, just reached a nice milestone. One hundred of the parishioners of the Diocese of Charleston have bought a niche for their cremains with 90 of those from St James and 4 from St Andrews. Please stop by and check out the new beauty of the grounds and Honeycombs. For only $2,900 you can stay near your church and be on Consecrated Catholic ground. This money includes the engraving of your faceplate. Each niche can hold the cremains for two people whether it is for a married couple or two members of a family. The organization is based in South Carolina and has teams of adult presenters in SC and seven other states who deliver a variety of programs to parents and teens at parishes across the country. Dear St. Andrew Family, I would like to share with you the journey of one of our families. The following is a note written from Julie and George Clardy, their daughter joined our 3 rd grade class this year. Our family has always felt the calling to care for widows and orphans, as told in James 1:27. We strongly believe in advocating for the vulnerable people of this world. After Julie's two mission trips abroad to Africa, the calling to adopt internationally became even more clear. We began our adoption in the summer of 2014, after Julie returned from a visit to South Africa. Two and-a-half years later we are still in the process of pursuing our son from South Africa and believe the promise God has made to our family and our son will be fulfilled. Our deepest hearts desire and prayer is that he will join us by the end of summer. As a family we petition for him every evening and Laura Ellen and her older brother and younger sister are very excited for him to join our family. Please keep this family in your prayers as they pursue this special mission and fulfill God s work in providing a loving home for a child in need. Warmly, Debbie Wilfong PRINCIPAL S CORNER PARISH REGISTRATION Welcome! It is a great joy to welcome new members to our parish community. 9 WORD OF LIFE When God created each of us, He did so with precision and purpose, and He looks on each of us with love that cannot be outdone in intensity or tenderness. ~ USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities Respect Life Program Flyer: Masterpieces of God s Creation PRO-LIFE ANSWERS TO FALSE PRO-CHOICE ARGUMENTS PART 5 "How can you make a fetus more important than a grown woman?" Abortion is a human rights issue, but politically speaking, it does involve competing rights. On the one hand, you have the mother's "right" not to be pregnant. On the other hand, you have the baby's right not to be killed. The question that must therefore be answered is which right is more fundamental? Abortion advocates argue that outlawing abortion would, in essence, elevate the rights of the unborn over and above those of the mother. However, in reality, outlawing abortion would not be giving unborn children more rights; it would simply re-establish for them the most fundamental right that no one can live without, namely the right to life. If a baby is not to be aborted, then the pregnant mother must remain pregnant. This will also require of her sickness, fatigue, reduced mobility, an enlarged body and some new clothes. Fortunately, it is not a permanent condition. On the flip side, for a pregnant woman not to be pregnant, her child must be killed (unless she is past 22 weeks of pregnancy, in which case the baby may well survive outside the womb). Abortion costs the unborn child his or her very life and it is a thoroughly permanent condition. That is what's at stake, both for the child and for the mother. It is not an issue of who is more important, but rather who has more on the line. Any time there are competing rights, the government must protect the more fundamental right. For example, the law requires the driver of a car to slow down and stop so a pedestrian may cross the road in front of him. This is not because the pedestrian is more valuable or important than the driver, but rather because, if the driver does not stop, it might cost the pedestrian his life. Obviously, for a woman to remain pregnant, she gives up far more than a few minutes of drive time, but she gives up far less than her baby who would otherwise be killed. This is what it comes down to. Since the child has far more at stake, the more fundamental right to life must be upheld. 9

CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Our next CFFR/AFFR meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 28 th at St. Andrew CLC at 6:30 PM. We will make our plans for the upcoming Military Appreciation Day Parade set for Saturday, May 27 th at Market Common. We will also watch the dramatic and powerful documentary ONE GENERATION AWAY showing the erosion of religious liberty and exposing how radical secularists are working to destroy our freedom of conscience. For more information contact - Carol Jean Walters, Director, SC Catholics For Freedom of Religion/Americans For Freedom of Religion address: cjwalters@catholicsforfreedomofreligion.org or by phone at # or # "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." President Ronald Reagan Religious Liberty Loses Case: Washington State: Florist Barronelle Stutzman, age 72, sued by the state and the ACLU for declining to design and provide flowers for a same-sex wedding, lost her appeal at the state's Supreme Court in February. She had declined to serve a long-time customers' wedding because of her Christian beliefs but instead recommended 3 florists who would gladly create the floral pieces. "What the court decided was now the government has the power to separate me from my livelihood and faith," said Mrs. Stutzman. "They're trying to compel me to design something that goes totally against my personal conscience." The Washington Supreme Court ruled she is also liable for fines and legal costs estimated at over $2 million. Mrs. Stutzman said, "It's not just my freedom, it's everybody's freedom, whether you're religious or not, that is at stake.
