1 1 Court News Our Lady of the Lakes #1850 In Unity and Charity Connie Hunsinger November/December 2015 Editor Judy Swortz My Dear Sisters in Christ, You are in my thoughts and prayers as we go into the holiday season. We know that there are many of you who cannot make the meetings. We also know that you want to be involved so we are reminding you to be sure and participate in our activities. There are many things you can do from your home, like be on the phone committee and help out with the bake sale. In exchange of course is the relationships we have with one another while serving one another.. We were privileged to attend a meeting with the state officers on October 24! The photo below are the members who offered to come and see what we could do to help our court and learn about the CDA! If there is anything that you would like to see us do or some idea that we could use, call me, or me, and if you like, let Diane Cloquet who will also share this information. Your sister in Christ. There were many Catholic Daughters there to support Betty and her four daughters and their families. Be sure to keep them in your prayers. 3 3 Circle of Love These offices are way to serve one another and the people of God! Quality of Life: Catholic Daughters of the Americas are " stewards" of all that surrounds us. Women have led the way and have educated themselves about social issues and social justice topics that affect families and neighborhoods, communities and the world. Youth: Promote programs and activities which enhance personal and spiritual growth and develop leadership skills. Legislation: The empowerment of Catholic womanhood to develop a Catholic Policy Agenda to reach out and speak out in the legislative arena for the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all mankind, in accordance with the principles of justice and peace. Education: Education is a self -enlightening process. It will help to impact careers and the overall quality of life. Spiritual: Through the Circle of Love's Spiritual Enhancement program. CDA members look for the many ways in which they might come closer to Our Lord, closer in spirit and love to our fellow man, and closer to our Catholic Daughters of the Americas sisters in Christ. Programs are developed to assist in bringing about opportunities to participate in the religious and charitable ministries of the Church as well as improving personal sanctification. Leadership: One of the goals of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas is to prepare women to assume positions of leadership in their courts, states, dioceses. and local communities. If women are to be successful in these positions, they must have the necessary information and tools to assist them. National Projects: The National Projects give each Catholic Daughter the opportunity to demonstrate the love and charity she feels toward the less fortunate, in society and the world at large. It also represents a response to Christ's call to us. His Servants, National Projects. 4 4 Pray for our member Terry Roy and her family, AnSo Farkas, Elaine Crouse, all of whom need our prayers. Please pray for Mary Ann Van Camp and her husband George as they journey through life. Please pray for our loving member Sarah Jones, Marilyn LeMoine. Please pray for Connie's husband Prentice Hunsinger. Please pray for all of those who need our prayers, those in a state of depression, those in chronic pain, those suffering from disease. Pray for those in the military, those whose families are far from them. Think of our housebound members and call them. Pray for those alone in life. Please pray the rosary. 5 5 St Frances of Rome A saint for all women! A wife, a mother, a widow, a good daughter- in -law, an oblate of St Benedict Feast Day March 9. St. Frances was a young Roman woman who aspired to a spiritual life. At age 13, her family married her off into an affluent family who had a certain social status. She was reluctant to take on this life since these were not her choices. As the mother of three, the wife of a man who was captured and taken off, the daughter-in-law to a woman who felt social status was important, she finally came to terms with her life with the help of a Guardian Angel who was by her side at all times the rest od her life. Frances was a good mother, a faithful wife; a person who realized that taking care of your family and their concerns is also a vocation and the most important one for her. Her ability to help the poor was enhanced by her life style. She was able to assist the poor, to provide for others. Her guardian angel was there to point out the fine points of charity serving not only her family but also to the poor. Eventually she joined the oblates of St Benedict and after her husband died, she lived with them as a leader. The lesson for us from St Frances is that we also are to take care of our husbands and our families. We do not always get to make the choices to do what we want, but what is wanted by God. We all can relate to this statement. Reflection. As mothers and wives we choose to love and serve the needs of others, often not able to make our own choices. We need to listen and do God s will. God has appointed a Guardian Angel for each one of us, to protect us from all evils, whose warnings we are bound to heed. Pay attention, let us listen to our angel s voice and we shall see him hereafter when he leads us before the throne of God.

6 6 APOSTLESHIP OF THE SEA A ministry for us to do! Gift boxes for the Merchant Marines Seaman s Boxes Since 1960, our court has been involved in helping out the people who visit us at the Port of Tacoma. We live in an area where many ships come to the Port of Tacoma to load and unload their cargo. Each of these ships has people working who are away from home for long periods of time. They are bringing the freight on the ships and one of the ways we can spiritually and physically help them out, is by giving them small gift boxes about the size of a shoe box. Do not gift wrap the boxes! These boxes can be filled with wool socks and hats, candy, needles and thread, embroidery items, and puzzles. Items like hand cream, little luxuries or things they can take home for their wives and children are also appreciated. Regardless of whether or not you come to meetings, you can help us out in November by picking up a box at our bake sale and bring it back in December to our bake sale, filled up with the love from your family. These people are at sea for many months, they are away from their friends, families and we can help them out. Membership Drive BOGO (Bring One, Gain One) CDA #1850 Our Lady of the Lakes One of the priorities in any organization is maintaining the membership. In order for the organization to be around any length of time, we need to continue getting our friends and neighbors, those who have a great deal in common with us, to join us in belonging to the CDA. Never hesitate to ask your friends if they are interested in joining us. The richness of our friendships, the value of our relationships can never be underestimated. Our own membership fluctuates all the time. We have people who move away, people who are new and people who who are looking for the relationship of other Catholic women! Ask one friend if she is interested in helping us with our projects! Ask her to join!
