INSIDE THIS ISSUE: National CDA News Shirley Seyfried Comments from State Regent Margee Keller Comments from our Regent Rita Young Annual Day Trip / Pilgrimage Upcoming Events 4 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary CDA Scholarship Awards Meeting Minutes from June 20, 2016 Test Your Skills Word Search WHAT IS A CATHOLIC DAUGHTER? She is a common ordinary woman. She loves her God and church. She loves her family and cares for them in a most loving way. She loves her community because without faith, family, and friends, she stands alone and lonely. She is mature (over 18) in mind and spirit. She follows the motto of Unity and Charity by working for the church, family, and community. By her membership, many charities are supported in the state, national, and local levels
2 National CDA Regent s Message National Regent, Shirley Seyfried State CDA News (Excerpts taken from the June 2016 Catholic Daughters of the Americas National Quarterly Newsletter) Dear Sisters in Catholic Daughters, I can t believe I am writing my last Quarterly Newsletter to you. Where has the time gone? Thank you to everyone for all you do in Catholic Daughters. Wherever you are serving, you are greatly appreciated. This organization could not do the outstanding charitable work that it does without the contributions each of you make every day. Your prayer support is phenomenal and it is the basis for all we do. Every time I read a local or state newsletter, or read the new projects, CDA in Action, news and notes, youth, and anniversary sections of Share, I am continually impressed by all the work being done in communities all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, Mexico, and now in Kenya. I love to read about all your wonderful projects. In June, we turn another chapter in our CDA courts as we install new local court officers. Thank you to all those officers who are retiring after many, or maybe only a few years, as an officer. Thanks to all the new and outgoing officers! I would like to congratulate each new officer and chairman on making that special commitment to your court by serving for the next two years and, to thank those who have graciously completed their terms this State Regent, year or in past years. Your court Margee Keller could not survive without that special commitment each of you have made to our great organization of Catholic Daughters. Committing, or volunteering, is the most fundamental act of citizenship in our society. It is our offering of time, energy, and skills of one s own free will. It is an extension of being a good neighbor, transforming a collection of houses into a community, No matter the number of years, your service is very much appreciated. Thanks, too, for the time you gave to serve your fellow members as officers. To the newly elected and soon-to-be installed officers, thank you so much for saying yes and making the twoyear commitment to serve your court. Remember to say a prayer to the Holy Spirit to guide you as you carry out your duties. If you have questions, ask your predecessors and you will shine as an officer. As I close this final letter to you, I cannot thank you enough for all your tremendous work in Catholic Daughters. I am very impressed with all the work you do and all the people of God being served. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide you as you work as the hands and feet of Jesus on this earth. You have truly exemplified my theme, Whatever you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me. (Matthew 25:40). Peace & God Bless You Always, Shirley Seyfried For more National CDA information, visit our website: as people become involved in the improvement of their surroundings and choose to help others. So, I thank the Lord for giving everyone a chance to serve again and to give of yourself in some small way each day to those who are not as blessed as us. In CDA friendship, Margee Keller MN State Regent For more State CDA information, visit our website: 2
3 Have you ever been someone s miracle? I bet you have and didn t even know it. Prayers can be answered by ordinary people like you and me. The key is to open your heart, mind, and soul to the Holy Spirit and allow God to guide you. Doing small things with great love brings the miracle of God s love to others. If you learn to recognize people s needs and pain, you are capable of being a miracle to them. God is eager to use you to answer someone s prayer. Go for it! Plainview Regent, Rita Young Comments From Our Regent Plainview Court Many thanks to Karen Reinschmidt, Jessica Andring, Jean Klavetter, and Sharon Durgin for continuing their officer positions for another term. I am grateful for their faithful service and I look forward to working with them in guiding our Court over the next 2 years. Blessings for an enjoyable summer. Rita Young Regent CDA Court Plainview #497 held their annual day trip on Saturday, May 21st. Fifteen members, along with two guests, visited the Marian Shrine at Schoenstatt on the Lake in Sleepy Eye, MN, which has been designated by Pope Francis as a pilgrimage site for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Our day included Reconciliation, silent reflection, as well as the opportunity to walk through the Holy Door of Mercy. On our way home, we attended Mass at St. Joseph s Parish in Owatonna. Upon returning to Rochester, some CDA sisters went to Fisherman s Inn for supper before heading back to Plainview. It was a wonderful day filled with great experiences for those who were able to participate. 3

5 May / June 2015 Newsletter The Assumption became a feast day celebrated by the Church every year on August 15th. What it brings to mind is the height to which the Church has elevated this special woman. The teaching is that, at the end of her earthly course, Mary was assumed into heavenly glory, body and soul. Mary s passage into Heaven is called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption of Mary has two purposes. The first is that we celebrate the happy departure of Mary from this physical life on Earth. The second purpose is the assumption of her body into Heaven. We firmly believe that, from the moment of her conception, Mary was free of all sin, including Original Sin, by a special favor of Almighty God. The Archangel Gabriel recognized her as full of grace, blessed among women, and one with the Lord. Finally, when she was 59 years old, Mary died A.D. 48. She had enough time to say goodbye to all the apostles before she died. The grieving apostles took her body to a tomb near the one that Jesus was laid in. They covered her with a white shroud and laid her to rest in the tomb. However, Mary s body did not stay there. Jesus came to her and took her body and soul into Heaven to be with Him. We do not know for sure the place or circumstances of the death of Virgin Mary; however, one tradition attests that she died in Jerusalem. Another tradition points to the city of Ephesus, where she is said to have lived for a short time prior to her death. The Bible does not inform us about the circumstances of the death of the Mother of Jesus. The stories about it took shape in the first centuries after her death and focused on her deathbed and her body being carried to Heaven by angels Marypages Design Each year, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Plainview #497 awards scholarships in the amount of $250 each to graduating high school seniors. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must be an active member of their respective parish (St. Joachim s, Immaculate Conception, or St. Patrick s) and they must write an essay on how they have lived and will continue to live the Mission Statement of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. This year s recipients were John Petersen and Alex Scharpen. John, pictured with Regent Rita Young, is a member of St. Joachim s Parish and he plans to attend Southeast Technical College in Winona to obtain a degree in welding. Alex, pictured with Vice Regent Karen Reinschmidt, is a member of St. Patrick s Parish and he plans to attend UW-LaCrosse College of Health Sciences to major in radiology. Congratulations to both recipients! 5
