In the State of Arizona, the names Delma Araiza and Catholic Daughters of the Americas were synonymous. We seldom saw Delma in anything other then her CDA purple. On July 12, 2016, after a number of years of struggling with health problems, Delma left this earth to enjoy the Heavenly reward that her deep faith promised to a as a faithful servant of the Lord. Delma was very dedicated to the church, Catholic Daughters and was a Matriarch to her family. Delma was born in Winkelman, AZ on May 4, 1940, graduated from San Manuel High School and left for Tucson to attend Lamson Business College. She then returned home to Mammoth, AZ and worked for Local 937 Mine Mill and Smelter. In 1965 Delma moved to Tucson and began work for the State of Arizona and then on to the Pima County Assessors office and at the time of her retirement in 2004, she was the Chief County Assessor. In 1998 Delma joined Ct. St Augustine #1227 and began her years of devotion to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She served her court as Regent and she also did the State newsletter that won 1 st place every year on the National level. From 2005 to 2009 Delma was the Arizona State Regent and in 2010 she was installed as a National Director. Delma gave her all to her work for CDA but her health prevented her from continuing on as a National Officer. Many of the priests ordained in the Tucson Diocese knew Delma personally because of her strong support, prayers and generosity during their formation years in the seminary. Delma will be greatly missed by her sister Peggy (Joe) Agredano, 4 nieces, 2 nephews, many grandnieces and nephews plus 4 great nieces and nephews and many CDA sisters in Arizona and around the US. Participating students can be home schooled, attend CCD, or attend Catholic School. Students are to submit a free-hand drawing depicting the theme of: "Corporal Works of Mercy including an Image of Our Lady of Mercy." The deadline for submissions is October 6, 2016 in Phoenix and October 22, 2015 in Tucson. I hope that all of you have enjoyed a great summer whether you stayed in AZ or traveled to other regions of our beautiful country or even beyond. Our National convention in Pittsburgh was a busy and full week as almost 900 Catholic Daughters gathered together to renew friendships, pray together, conduct business and make decisions for the good of our order, elect our new National Board and share in some fun along the way. It was great to see and spend some time with all the CDA members from AZ that attended. We shared a lovely evening on State Night with Thanks to our State Board. We are blessed with wonderful leadership for the Catholic Daughters in Arizona. They returned from Pittsburgh with the knowledge they gained and of changes made to share with all of you. Our new National Regent, Helene Shepard has chosen a wonderful theme for her term, "Serve the Lord with Gladness" May we all adopt that in our work and lives. As our courts get ready to start up again after a refreshing summer break to enjoy family, friends and some R&R, may we continue to work together in Unity and Charity and continue following our Holy Father's request for works of Mercy. It is also important that we keep up our campaign of Shirley's to increase our memberships and look for possible locations for new courts and most important to maintain the members already part of our courts. If all goes well we are close to the Institution of a court in Eloy soon. Maureen will keep you informed of that. I was re-elected to serve another term as a National Director but have not to date received my new assignments. I will know soon what that assignment will be for the next 2 years. I mostly likely will be National Director for AZ again, but I want to take this chance to tell you how much I have enjoyed working with Maureen and the State Board. It has been extra special since it is my own State and my AZ CDA sisters. Be assured that you will remain in my prayers daily for the success of Catholic Daughters in Arizona. EDUCATION CONTEST WINNERS A second place winner was announced at the National Convention in the Poetry Division from Court St. Germaine in Prescott Valley in the National Education Contest we are proud to announce the name Linda J. Stilson who received the award and a check from National. She previously was voted a State winner and received a check and certificate from the Arizona State Board. See Her Poem Printed in the next to this article. All of us are stewards of God s creation, Regardless of race, color, or religion. Guided by God s love to respect one another, Spreading his message; inspiring each other. Working to recycle, repair and replant is our duty, Ensuring future generations will enjoy earth s beauty. Also included is an article taken from the Dioceses of Tucson Paper the Vision St. John student win Catholic Daughter art awards. Three fifth-grade students from St. John the Evangelist shool won cash prizes in the Catholic Daughters of the America 2016 National Education Contest, school Officials announced. Their art work entries were submitted to the Catholic Daughters Court Queen of Peace 2359, Our Lady of the Valley Parish. The theme of the Art work was We are Stewards of Gods Creation First Place went to Romina Peres, second place to Itzel Cavada and third went to Judith Hirrell. Perez s first place art work was then submitted to State level where it was judged against other pieces from students throughout the State in her division(4th/5th grade) and she earned second place from all the entries received. Many thanks to Armida Goeden Regent Court Quenn of Peace #2359 GreenValley for chairing the education awards this year. Anyone who has had this responsibility knows it is a job taking lots of organization and hard work. Many thanks Armida and many thanks for your agreeing to continue to work as the Arizona State Chairperson. Local Court Newsletter Competition, We are happy to announce that Court St. Clare of Assisi #2677 Surprise Regent Reggie Wesley and Editor Madeline Marcoux Won in Their division (Category 1 Division 1) third place. 4 Convention members from Arizona Delegation at the state dinner. We enjoyed the Thursday evening dinner at the Habitat Restaurant in Pittsburgh.. It was an easy walk from our hotel and needed after the delicious meal. After working on bylaw changes and hearing many wonderful presentations we were able to gather and have a fun evening with those who brought our family members along. For my family it was an eye opener for them to see what we do as Catholic Daughters. Hope more will be able to join the experience at the next National Convention in Sioux Falls, SD. Court #2250 Our Lady of Guadalupe We ended our year with helping at a Tea at St. Stephen s Byzantine Church, where we meet occasional, and have 5 members. Before the tea we installed four new members into the court, two others will be installed in the fall. We are getting ready to serve a continental breakfast for the members of parishes who make Rosary Celebration possible. The court has been doing this for over 30 years, with love and devotion to those who make the celebration day happen. We met in August for the first meeting of the year and I shared what we have been doing this summer, convention items and where the next convention will be in South Dakota.
