She is a common ordinary woman. She loves her God and church. She loves her family and cares for them in a most loving way. She loves her community because without faith, family, and friends, she stands alone and lonely. She is mature (over 18) in mind and spirit. She follows the motto of Unity and Charity by working for the church, family, and community. By her membership, many charities are supported in the state, national, and local levels

2 National CDA Regent s Message (Excerpts from an dated 12/16/15 to the Local Court Regents) Dear Sisters in Catholic Daughters, I would like to announce a very exciting development in CDA. At the National Convention in Billings, our new National Chaplain, Father Matthew, read a statement that had been made at the 1956 National Regent, Catholic Daughters National Shirley Seyfried Convention by Archbishop Fulton Sheen which said, You are the Catholic Daughters of America; I would like to see you become Catholic Daughters of the World. Father Matthew challenged us to do that. On Tuesday, December 8 (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception), National Regent-Elect, Helene Shepard, and I instituted the first world court in Kenya, East Africa. As we told you in July at the State Officers Conference in Belleville, the priest in Kenya had seen me on EWTN talking about Catholic Daughters and the Church Universal Program and he called and asked me to come to Kenya to start a Catholic Daughters court there. We were finally able to set a date for all involved to leave on December 2nd. Then came the travel warnings from the State Department two weeks before we were to depart advising us not to travel to Africa and many other places because of the possible terrorist attacks. We did reconsider our plans and prayed hard about whether we should go, but we felt we were being called to go at that time. However, because of the warnings and advice to keep a low profile we went, but we did not announce we were going. Now that we have State CDA News State Regent, Margee Keller January/ February 2016 Newsletter I hope your celebration of Christmas was joyous and filled with many happy memories. I trust you are all surviving winter...soon, spring will be upon us! The National Convention is approaching quickly. Please make the extra effort to attend in person if you can. You can learn much, experience great times, and develop and rekindle friendships. If you cannot attend in person, please keep everyone who returned, we are extremely happy to make that announcement. Court St. Monica # 2706 was instituted in Kenya with 60 women in attendance and many more who want to join but could not come that day because they were working. We had a wonderful visit to Kenya. Father Peter, the priest there, is a Sons of Divine Providence Order Priest, the first native Kenyan in the order and he is currently the rector of the seminary there. He had us stay at the seminary, and he and the seminarians were the best hosts anyone could ask for! Father took us out on a few trips to experience Kenya first-hand and show us the beauty of the country. We also saw some extreme poverty and the work being done by the Sons of Divine Providence Order. He showed us a really nice day school they run for 150 children with disabilities (we saw one school they actually have two schools) and they fund it by raising a large, two-acre garden and several greenhouses of vegetables all tilled, planted, weeded, and harvested by hand. Their extra vegetables are given to the poor. Because the weather is beautiful all year around, they are able to harvest one crop and plant another so that they get three or four crops a year. Peace & God Bless, Shirley Seyfried For more National CDA information, visit our website: travels and attends in your prayers. This is the time of year when you should be thinking about new leadership for your Plainview Court. It is never too early to start thinking about this, as leadership is not only for leaders; it is for everyone. God Bless America and God Bless You! 3 Comments From Our Regent Plainview Court Plainview Regent, Rita Young Another Advent season has ended and celebrations welcoming the gift of Jesus Christ at Christmas are winding down. New Year s resolutions are being made. How about you? What will you resolve to do in 2016 to become the best version of yourself? As you know, the Year of Mercy began on December 8. How will you show mercy in the months ahead? As Catholic Daughters, much of what we do and pray for demonstrates mercy. Let s try to take it up a notch in Here is information about the Year of Mercy taken from the Dynamic Catholic website (dynamiccatholic.com/year-ofmercy). Blessings to all of you for a blissful, merciful Rita Young, Regent What is the Year of Mercy? Seeing the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis called for the Year of Mercy a special period, also known as a Holy Year or Jubilee Year, for the Catholic Church. It is a time for the Church across the world to take approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Pope Francis has asked us as individuals and as a Church to be a witness of mercy by reflecting on and practicing the seven spiritual and seven corporal works of mercy. The Holy Year of Mercy will focus on studying and reflecting on mercy, receiving mercy, and being merciful towards others. What is a Jubilee Year? A Jubilee Year is when the Catholic Church across the world takes approximately a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. Catholics are encouraged to join together in prayer, go to confession, and share the genius of Catholicism with others. The purpose of a Jubilee Year is to help people grow spiritually, strengthen their faith, and encourage works of service, and to promote unity within the Catholic Church and society in general. The last Jubilee Year was in 2000, called for by Pope Saint John Paul II. What is the Indulgence for the Year of Mercy? Like any Jubilee Year, a person can receive a plenary indulgence for the Year of Mercy. A plenary indulgence removes all of what is called temporal punishment due to sins that have already been forgiven. Sin and evil are real. Every sin, large or small, is in some way a rejection of the-bestversion-of-ourselves and a rejection of God. Temporal punishment is the natural consequence of that sin, the necessary purification following forgiveness of sin. (See Catechism of the Catholic Church on Indulgences and Sin and Mercy). The Year of Mercy is an invitation an invitation to love and to show kindness and unbounded generosity. Pope Francis is offering you the opportunity to encounter the incredible mercy of God. Encountering mercy means encountering God. It can transform your life, your relationships, your work, and your ability to embrace and experience all of life. 3
